Gov. Perry Challenges Gov. Cuomo to Debate Economic Policy
Touts Texas in new 30-second spot to air on New York television

AUSTIN - Texas Gov. Rick Perry is heading back to New York this week and he is inviting Gov. Andrew Cuomo to defend the economic policies that have made New York the worst state in the country for business. This dubious distinction comes from the non-partisan Tax Foundation's 2014 State Business Tax Climate Index, which ranked New York dead last of all the 50 states.

Speaking with Fred Dicker on Albany's Talk 1300 news radio, Gov. Perry made his debate invitation to Gov. Cuomo, saying states like New York would do well to follow the lessons Texas has learned in becoming the second largest economy in the nation. Texas surpassed New York as the nation's second largest economy in 2011.

"A debate between the governors of two of the largest states in the country on policy issues such as taxes, government spending, education, regulations and legal reform would be beneficial to our states and our country as a whole," Gov. Perry said. "New York is a great state with good and hardworking people, but if it is going to be successful in the future, New York needs more policies that encourage job creation. I believe we are doing it right in Texas, and I hope Gov. Cuomo will accept my invitation."

Gov. Perry is in New York City from April 22 to 24 to meet with business leaders as part of his ongoing effort to share the story of Texas' successful job creation policies.

While Gov. Perry is in New York, Americans for Economic Freedom will debut a 30-second television spot featuring Gov. Perry, who tells New York business leaders: "If you're tired of New York, there is an option: Texas. Creating jobs, creating success, leading the way."

While New York has taken some steps to increase its business competitiveness through initiatives like Start-Up NY, which provides tax incentives to some companies operating in specific areas of the state, New York retains the overall worst tax climate in the U.S., according to the non-partisan Tax Foundation.

"Job creators of all kinds, whether they are major companies, first-time entrepreneurs, or small business owners, look for certain conditions when they are considering starting or growing a business," AEF Board Member Carly Fiorina said. "Successful states have created this foundation through low taxes, smart regulations, fair courts and a competitive workforce."

"The key lessons of low taxes and smart regulations in the ongoing competition between the states can be applied all across the country to invigorate the American economy," said Dr. Arthur Laffer, an AEF board member. "As each state economy is strengthened through increased economic activity, job creation and generation of wealth, we rebuild the American economic engine through increased employment and opportunity."

FACTS ABOUT THE TEXAS ECONOMY:

• Texas' employment grew at 2.9 percent in 2013 - the fastest of the 10 largest states and more than twice as fast as New York's growth of 1.3 percent.

• Additionally, Texas added more than three times as many jobs as New York over the past 10 years.
