Republican National Committee

RNC Statement On Speaker Paul Ryan

WASHINGTON – Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus issued the following statement today after Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) was elected Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives:

“Paul Ryan is the right man, at the right time, to lead the House of Representatives at this critical period in history. Paul is a devoted husband and father, as well as a loyal, long time friend, and a man committed to making our country a better place," said Chairman Reince Priebus.

"Paul is a conservative who has dedicated his life to public service, and I know that he's focused toward building an America where everyone can prosper. I want to thank Speaker John Boehner for his exemplary leadership during his tenure as Speaker. His years of principled service have greatly benefited our party and our nation."

Republican Jewish Coalition

RJC Statement on Speaker Ryan

Washington, DC (October 29th, 2015) - Today, the Republican Jewish Coalition released the following statement after Paul Ryan's election to the post of Speaker of the House.

RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks said:

"We congratulate Paul Ryan on becoming Speaker of the House and are very excited to work with him on the critical issues facing our nation.  As a stalwart ally of the pro-Israel community and a longtime friend of Israel, Paul Ryan will continue the strong support we've seen for Israel in Congress. The Obama administration has been antagonistic and hostile to Israel and the pro-Israel community.  We can think of no one better than Paul Ryan to lead the effort to stand up against the dangerous and destructive policies of this White House and truly have Israel's back."

Americans United for Change

AUFC Statement on ‘Serious’ Paul Ryan’s Ascension to House Speaker

Washington DC – Americans United for Change President Brad Woodhouse issued the following statement on Congressman Paul Ryan (R-WI) becoming House Speaker:

“Like everyone on the Republican presidential debate stage last night, incoming Speaker Paul Ryan is out-of-touch, out-of-date, and much too extreme for the American people. Be skeptical of any suggestion that Ryan is a “center-right” voice of reason next to the Freedom Caucus, as if his instincts and priorities didn’t largely mirror theirs having voted 85% of the time with the Tea Party. Proving he’s not above reckless acts of brinksmanship that hurt our economy, Ryan voted against the 2013 deal that reopened the government and stopped the default on the nation’s debt obligations before more damage was done. Ryan very much wants to take away a woman’s right to make their own reproductive health decisions, even in cases of rape. Ryan sits comfortably in the flat-Earth camp that denies the overwhelming scientific consensus that climate change is real and man-made. Under Speaker Ryan, don’t hold your breath for any forward movement on efforts to ensure equal pay for equal work for women after trashing the Lilly Ledbetter Act. And let’s not forget Ryan is the architect behind the GOP’s hugely unpopular, perennial scheme to end Medicare’s guarantee with private insurance coupons that by design don’t keep up with health costs and stick seniors with the tab. And with very little convincing, Ryan has already assured Freedom Caucus that comprehensive immigration reform would be dead on his watch as long as Barack Obama is President. New face, same do-nothing Congress.”

“The current House GOP budget is nothing but a regurgitation of Ryan’s plans for severe austerity cuts to programs like Medicaid that help the most vulnerable while giving away trillions of dollars in tax breaks for millionaires and outsourcers who need them least. Without a hint of irony, Ryan recently announced “I’m focused on poverty these days,” and yet opposes raising the minimum wage and lifting millions of Americans from it. As someone notorious for his use of “magic asterisks” to pretend top-tier tax breaks pay for themselves, be wary of claims that Ryan brings much needed seriousness to the Republican Party.  He doesn’t. He is however the author of many policies that will seriously hurt the ability of Americans to reach and stay in the middle class. After receiving his caucus’ nomination for Speaker yesterday, Ryan marched out to announce “We are turning the page”, but didn’t specify which of Ayn Rand’s books he was referring to.”

Democracy for America

Progressives "excited" about Ryan's Speakership, "makes it easier for Dems to expose GOP"

...here's a quick reaction to Paul Ryan's election as Speaker (and why progressives are excited by it) from Democracy for America's Charles Chamberlain:

"As progressives, we could not be more excited about the far-right Republican House caucus' decision to back Paul Ryan as Speaker of the House.

"Thanks to his Vice Presidential run, nearly everyone knows about Paul Ryan's steadfast commitment to doing whatever he can to cut American's hard-earned Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security benefits. Ryan's election as speaker will only make it easier for Democrats to expose Republicans as the party that'd rather starve grandma than stand up to its corporate funders.

"It's hard to understand why House Republicans would decide to wear a yoke like Paul Ryan and his dedication to attacking widows, orphans, and the elderly as a badge of honor.  Honestly, it's the kind of bone-headed move that makes the Democrats' difficult task of winning back the House seem possible.  However, as they say, far be it from me to interrupt our opponents when they're making an unfathomably stupid mistake."  -- Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director, Democracy for America

Ryan to GOP Colleagues

Congressman Ryan sent the following letter to members of the House Republican Conference.

Dear Colleague:

Over the past few days, I’ve been thinking a lot about our country, and it’s clear to me that we’re in a very serious moment. Working families continue to fall behind, and they are losing faith in the American Idea: the belief that if you work hard and play by the rules, you can get ahead. At the same time, a weaker America has led to a more dangerous world. Our friends and rivals alike wonder whether we will pull ourselves out of this stupor.

Instead of rising to the occasion, Washington is falling short—including the House of Representatives. We are not solving the country’s problems; we are only adding to them.

But now, we have an opportunity to turn the page, to start with a clean slate, and to rebuild what has been lost. We can make the House a more open and inclusive body—one where every member can contribute to the legislative process. We can rally House Republicans around a bold agenda that will tackle the country’s problems head on. And we can show the country what a commonsense conservative agenda looks like.

That’s why I’m actually excited for this moment. I’ve spoken with many of you over the past few days, and I can sense the hunger in our conference to get to work. I know many of you want to show the country how to fix our tax code, how to rebuild our military, how to strengthen the safety net, and how to lift people out of poverty. I know you’re willing to work hard and get it done, and I think this moment is ripe for real reform.

That’s because, whatever our differences, we’re all conservatives. We were elected to defend the constitution. We share the same principles. We all believe America is the land of opportunity—the place where you should be able to go as far as your talents and hard work will take you. We all believe in empowering every person to realize his or her potential. And we have the know-how to apply these principles to the problems of today.

I never thought I’d be speaker. But I pledged to you that if I could be a unifying figure, then I would serve—I would go all in. After talking with so many of you, and hearing your words of encouragement, I believe we are ready to move forward as a one, united team. And I am ready and eager to be our speaker.

This is just the beginning of our work. There is a long road ahead. So let’s get started.

Sincerely,

Paul Ryan
