Denver 2016 Host Committee announces new leadership

Pete Coors named chairman of Denver 2016 Host Committee

DENVER – Pete Coors will be the new chairman of the Denver 2016 Host Committee.  The announcement comes as Bob Beauprez is stepping aside as chairman to focus his time and attention to his campaign for Colorado governor.

“I know Pete will do a fantastic job.  Pete is a good friend and a strong advocate for Colorado,” Beauprez, who will remain on the host committee, said.  “I will work with Pete and the rest of the committee to ensure a seamless transition as the selection process moves forward.”

Coors, who is chairman of Molson Coors Brewing Company and MillerCoors, said he looks forward to chairing the Denver 2016 Host committee.

“Bob has done a spectacular job of getting the committee up and running,” Coors said.  “I look forward to working with the broad coalition of businesses and civic leaders as well as elected officials to ensure Denver’s bid is successful.”

The Committee also announced today that state Representative Amy Stephens will join the committee.  The Colorado Springs Republican and former Colorado House Majority Leader has a strong reputation of working across the aisle and advocating for issues important to Colorado’s business community.

“Bringing the Republican National Convention to Denver in 2016 will be a huge boost to our state’s economy, and our reputation around the world,” Stephens said.  “Denver has proven time and again that they are second to none when it comes to hosting historic national and international events.  I’m thrilled to be working with so many wonderful people who are focused on bringing this momentous event to our great state.”

Members of the Denver 2016 Host Committee were in Washington on Monday to pitch their bid to the Site Selection Committee.  If approved as a finalist, the Site Selection Committee will be invited to Denver to experience everything the city has to offer first hand.  The final selection is expected to be announced in August.

CONCERNING SUPPORT FOR DENVER'S BID TO HOST THE 2016 REPUBLICAN NATIONAL CONVENTION.

WHEREAS, Civic, business, and political leaders launched an effort for Denver to host the 2016 Republican National Convention; and

WHEREAS, Because Denver successfully hosted the Democratic National Convention in 2008, the city is well-prepared to handle the 2016 Republican National Convention; and

WHEREAS, Colorado and the Denver metropolitan area contain world-class infrastructure, including Denver International Airport, Regional Transportation District light rail and bus service, convention centers, sports arenas, and hotels, making Denver well-equipped to host a convention on the scale of the Republican National Convention; and

WHEREAS, Colorado provides many recreational and cultural opportunities, including seven professional sports teams, Rocky Mountain National Park, the Denver Art Museum, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the United States Mint, and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science; and

WHEREAS, A national convention of this magnitude draws around 50,000 visitors, and hosting the Republican National Convention will bring economic development and national recognition that benefits not only Denver, but the state of Colorado overall; and

WHEREAS, Colorado's reputation as a swing state also puts Colorado at the top of the list of places to host a national convention; and

WHEREAS, Bipartisan efforts are underway to bid for Denver to host the 2016 Republican National Convention, and honorary co-chairs of the host committee include Governor John Hickenlooper; Denver Mayor Michael Hancock; former United States Senator Hank Brown; former Republican National Committee Chair and former United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs Jim Nicholson; executive director of the Denver Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau Richard Scharf; Congressman Scott Tipton; Congressman Doug Lamborn; Congressman Cory Gardner; Congressman Mike Coffman; and Colorado Republican Party Chairman Ryan Call; and

WHEREAS, Based on experience from hosting the Democratic National Convention in 2008, hosting the Republican National Convention is a substantial commitment for both the city of Denver and the state of Colorado, and support from a broad coalition of civic, business, and political leaders can make the proposal successful; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Senate of the Sixty-ninth General Assembly of the State of Colorado, the House of Representatives concurring herein:

That we, the members of the Colorado General Assembly, support the bid for Denver to host the 2016 Republican National Convention, and look forward to once again bringing the national spotlight to Colorado.

Be It Further Resolved, That copies of this Joint Resolution be sent to Enid Mickelsen, Chairman of the 2016 Republican National Convention Site Selection Committee; Reince Priebus, Republican National Committee Chairman; Sharon Day, Republican National Committee Co-Chairman; Denver Mayor Michael Hancock; Governor John Hickenlooper; Ryan Call, Colorado Republican Party Chairman; and the Denver 2016 Republican National Convention Host Committee.

United in Orange, United for Denver 2016

DENVER – Over 70 civic, business and government leaders met to discuss why Denver will be the perfect host for the Republican National Convention in 2016 this afternoon.

“There’s no better place for Republicans to showcase job growth, innovation and healthy living than Colorado,” Gov. John Hickenlooper said. “From past experience hosting the Democratic National Convention, we already know Denver can benefit significantly from this type of national exposure. We will work side by side with the state Republican Party to try to bring its national convention to Colorado.”

Denver is no stranger to hosting national and international events, including the 1993 World Youth Day, the 23rd G8 Summit in 1997 and, most recently, the successful Democratic National Convention in 2008.

“As Denver showed with the Democratic National Convention in 2008, our city shines when staging world-class events,” Mayor Michael B. Hancock said. “We’re excited at the prospect of hosting another major political convention and once again showcasing our great city to the world. This would be a huge economic boost for Denver, and we’ll be at the table representing the city’s best interests.”

Denver 2016 Chairman, former Congressman Bob Beauprez added:

“One only needs to walk down the 16th Street Mall today to see how proud Coloradans are of their state.  Everywhere you look, people are united in orange and blue in support of the Broncos.  We’re always looking for ways to show the world what a great city Denver is, and what a beautiful state we have.   I’d like to thank the broad coalition of civic, business and government leaders, especially Gov. Hickenlooper and Mayor Hancock, who are working to make Denver home to the 2016 Republican National Convention!”
