LCV STATEMENT ON 2016 ELECTIONS

Washington, DC: Today League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinksi issued the following statement:

“The results of the presidential election don’t change the fact that the impacts of climate change are already upon us and that we as a country must continue to come together to address this crisis. We are eager to get right back to work defending President Obama’s tremendous progress in fighting climate change, protecting treasured public lands, and ensuring all communities have access to clean air and water. We know that the many environmental champions who won their races up and down the ballot are committed to doing just that, and we remain encouraged by the progress being made by many states, countries, and the private sector to advance climate solutions.

“Exactly one year ago, LCV proudly made the earliest presidential endorsement in our history because the stakes couldn’t be higher for the environment, and we knew that Hillary was the exact right person for the job. We are devastated that she won’t be our next president, but we applaud her for her many years of environmental leadership and for making climate change and clean energy such an important part of her hard-fought campaign.  As she urged us all to do in her powerful speech this morning, we will remember that it’s always worth fighting for what’s right.

“If President-Elect Trump and his allies think the results of this election give them a mandate to roll back this progress they are sorely mistaken. To the contrary, polls demonstrate bipartisan support for action on climate change and protections for clean air and clean water, and we urge Donald Trump to respect that support.  Moreover, many pro-environment candidates won across the country, including:  Catherine Cortez Masto became the first Latina U.S. Senator in Nevada and Jay Inslee in Washington, Roy Cooper in North Carolina and Steve Bullock in Montana all won their gubernatorial races. With our state partners, we also won key state legislative races in Nevada and New Mexico, and we helped defeat an industry-led anti-solar ballot measure in Florida. The transition to a clean energy future has already begun, and it cannot and will not be stopped. Our future depends on it.”
