Summary: This was a big day on the calendar for Democrats
and Republicans alike. Clinton's win in
the New York primary the week before had taken
the much of the wind out of the Sanders campaign's sails, but both
camps vigorously contested all five states. Clinton won
Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania, while Sanders managed
a win in Rhode Island, which has an open primary. More and more
the campaign is starting to look toward the general election. Reactions

in Dec. 2012.
Of the four states he lost
on the night, Sanders did best in Connecticut. Clinton carried
CDs 1, 3 and 4, while Sanders carried CDs 2 and 5. Clinton did
best in CD 4, the Southwestern tip of the state closest to New York
City; Sanders did best in CD 2, which covers the Eastern 40-percent of

OVERVIEW
Clinton had endorsements
of both U.S. Senators and all seven Democratic U.S.
House members. Several other races on the ballot attracted
intense interest among Democratic activists: the U.S. Senate primary
between U.S. Reps. Donna Edwards and Chris Van Hollen drew
national attention, the campaigns to succeed them in the 4th and
8th CDs were tightly contested, and there was a crowded
race for Mayor of Baltimore.
Maryland's former Gov. Martin
O'Malley also sought the Democratic nomination but his bid never gained
traction and he ended his campaign months earlier on the
night of the Iowa caucuses.
Of the five states holding
primaries today, Sanders fared worst in Maryland. He carried
three rural counties: Garrett, Alleghany and Carroll. 20.77% of votes cast (190,403) in
the Democratic primary were early votes.

OVERVIEW
Pennsylvania was the big prize on the day. Hillary Clinton could
claim some Pennsylvania roots as her father was born in Scranton and
the family summered at a cabin he had built overlooking Lake
Winola. In the April 22, 2008 primary Clinton finished ahead of
Obama by 1,275,039 (54.57%) to 1,061,441 (45.43%) with 2,336,480 total
votes cast. The Pennsylvania Secretary of State reported that
2016 turnout was not quite at the level of 2008 (+).
Clinton carried 37
counties to 30 for Sanders. Her best showing was in Philadelphia
County, where she obtained 218,959 votes (62.6%) to 129,353 (36.98%)
for Sanders, a plurality of 89,606 votes over Sanders
