Summary: Sen. Sanders carried his campaign through to the
last in the nation (LITN) DC
Democratic primary, but the race was effectively over. Hillary
Clinton had worn the mantle of
presumptive nominee for about a week, and been endorsed by President
Obama; the DC primary provided
the icing on the cake.

OVERVIEW
Statehood was an issue. In a May 11 op-ed in the Washington Informer Clinton vowed
to be "a vocal champion for D.C. statehood" as president (>).
Sanders
issued
a
statement
on
June
11
supporting statehood. In
terms of campaigning, Sanders held a rally at RFK parking lot on June 9
and Clinton made an unannounced visit to Uprising Muffin Company with
Mayor Bowser and
other local
supporters, in the Shaw neighborhood on June 10. The Clintons
have a home on Whitehaven St. in
Northwest DC, little more than three miles from the White House.
Clinton secured
endorsements of almost every
top elected official, and her campaign invested in a ground game
here. The May 21 pre-primary qualifying caucus proved to be a
good indicator of this very lopsided contest; more than four times as
many people ran as candidates for Clinton
delegate as for Sanders delegate.
