2016 Democratic Caucuses

All of Washington's 101 pledged delegates to the National Convention will be allocated based on the results of the Congressional District Caucuses. 67 delegates will be elected directly by the CD Caucuses (see the table below for how those delegates are divided among the various congressional districts). The remaining 34 delegates will be elected at the State Convention, with the allocation between the two candidates set by the disposition of the delegates elected at the Congressional District Caucuses.

Dear Delegate or Alternate,

Congratulations on your election as a delegate or alternate to your 2016 Congressional District Caucus and to the State Convention.

The Congressional District Caucuses will be held on May 21, 2016. The exact time and locations of these meetings are listed in the attached document.

Several actions will take place at the Congressional District Caucuses that are key to nominating and electing our next president. At each Congressional District Caucus, Congressional District Delegates will elect a slate of National Convention Delegates to attend the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on July 25th – 28th. In order to run for one of these positions you must have turned in a Statement of Candidacy to the State Party by Friday, May 6th, 2016 at 5:00 PM. Lists of those individual from who we have received Statements of Candidacy is located at http://www.wa-democrats.org/nationalconvention. Anyone who did not file by the deadline can still file to run for an At-Large National Delegate position (which will be elected at the State Convention on June 19th.) A table listing the number of delegates to be elected in each CD is included in the attached document.

In addition, each Congressional District Caucus will elect one presidential elector and one alternate. If the Democratic presidential nominee wins Washington State, the electors will meet in Olympia in mid-December to cast Washington’s votes in the Electoral College. You do not need to turn in a declaration of candidacy to run for one of these positions; electors are nominated in-person at the caucus. The specifics regarding the process of nomination and election are included in the “Rules for the Congressional District Caucus”, which is included in the attached document.

The list of delegates and alternates to the Congressional District Caucus has been posted to our website. Candidates for National Delegate may use this list to reach out to CD Delegates prior to the Convention.

I look forward to seeing you at your Congressional District Caucus. Thank you again for your hard work and commitment to our Party and its goals.
