Judy Shepard:
I've
seen what can happen as the result of hate.
My son Matt was murdered in Laramie, Wyoming in
1998. He was befriended by two men in a bar who pretended to be
gay. They offered him a ride home, and when he was in their car
they robbed him and beat him. They drove Matt out to the prairie
and tied him to a split-rail fence and beat him some more and left him
for dead.
In the aftermath of Matt's death, my family saw
the best of America in the love and support we were shown.
So when I see the hate that Donald Trump has
brought to his campaign for president, it terrifies me.
Trump:
I'd
like
to
punch
him in the face, I'll tell you...
Trump:
Oh,
I
don't
know
what I said, ah, I don't remember...
Trump:
He's
a
Mexican...
Trump:
I
could
stand
in
the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I
wouldn't...
Judy
Shepard: Words have an influence. Violence causes
pain. Hate can rip us apart. I know what can happen as the
result of hate, and Donald Trump should never be our president.

Today, Priorities USA is launching a new
TV ad called “Hate” featuring Judy
Shepard, whose son Matthew Shepard
was brutally murdered in Laramie, Wyoming back in 1998, simply because
he was gay. In the spot Judy recounts the unspeakable tragedy of what
happened to her son: “I know what
can happen as the result of hate.”
She
then remarks on Donald Trump’s campaign in which he’s incited violence,
mocked the disabled, trafficked in racism and bigotry, and even joked
about gun violence: “So
when I see the hate that
Donald Trump has brought to his campaign for president, it terrifies
me…words have an influence, violence causes pain, hate can
rip us apart. I know
what can happen as the result
of hate,
and Donald Trump should never be our president.”
The
unspeakable tragedy that Judy Shepard and her family suffered was a
sobering reminder of just how dangerous hate can be, and
throughout this
campaign Donald Trump has trafficked in hatred, bigotry, racism &
repeatedly mocked those who were different than him while inciting and
even joking about violence,” said Guy Cecil, Chief
Strategistat Priorities USA.
“As Judy said it best, ‘words have an influence, violence causes
pain, hate can rip us apart…Donald
Trump should never be our president.’”
“Hate” will
run OH,
PA, NC, FL, NV, IA, CO, & NH.
