United Brotherhood of Carpenters Endorse Hillary Clinton

The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC) is proud to announce its endorsement of Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic primary for President of the United States.

UBC General President Douglas J. McCarron said that the organization supports Secretary Clinton’s Presidential bid because of her proven track record in supporting the UBC, and the candidate’s position on issues that are critical to the union’s mission to provide a good quality of life for its members.

The UBC is one of the largest and oldest trade unions in the country and represents about 500,000 professional carpenters. The UBC has long-maintained a bi-partisan approach to politics, and supports candidates on both sides of the aisle when they support UBC issues.

“Hillary Clinton is a fighter and has consistently fought for our issues on many levels of government. The UBC believes that, as President, she will govern based on her understanding of the critical role unions play in strengthening the middle class and our country,” said General President McCarron.

“We encourage her to continue her efforts regarding long-term and strategic budgeting for our country’s infrastructure, implementing secure measures for pension reform, and eradicating the payroll fraud epidemic in our nation’s construction industry.”

Secretary Clinton’s platform also includes supporting Davis-Bacon laws, promoting training, protecting collective bargaining rights and opposing right-to-work legislation – issues that the UBC aggressively addresses on local, state, and federal levels.

“On the very first day in office, I’m going to get to work to reverse the incredible pressures on the working people of America,” Secretary Clinton said. “We’re going to go back to enforcing labor laws. I’m going to make sure that employers are held accountable for wage theft and all the other abuses that they engage in.”

UBC members met Secretary Clinton in person recently when she toured the UBC’s International Training Center in Las Vegas in August (see the video here). At the 41st UBC General Convention later that month, Secretary Clinton spoke via video to Convention delegates. At the 2002 UBC International Women’s Conference, Secretary Clinton issued the keynote speech.

Hillary Clinton Statement on Endorsement from United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America

Hillary Clinton released the following statement after the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America endorsed her campaign for President. The Carpenters and Joiners follow the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers, the American Federation of Teachers, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, and the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry in backing Clinton.

“I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

“Unions like the UBC built the mighty American middle class by creating good-paying jobs and careers across the country. And the Carpenters are doing their part to ensure that the jobs of the 21st century create as much opportunity as the jobs of the past. Earlier this year, I visited the UBC’s training center in Las Vegas, where men and women of all ages come together to learn new skills and crafts—an impressive example of the kinds of investments we need to build the economy of the future.

“As President, I will support unions like the Carpenters by expanding opportunities for apprenticeships and fighting every day to get wages rising again for working Americans. I have always stood and will always stand with unions like UBC against employer efforts to misclassify workers and steal wages, and against Republican assaults on collective bargaining and the right to organize. When unions are strong, families are strong—and when families are strong, America is strong.”

Hillary Clinton Earns United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Endorsement

Manchester -- Hillary Clinton earned the endorsement of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, continuing to build momentum for her campaign for President.

“We are excited to be endorsing Hillary Clinton for President," said Joseph J. Donahue with the New England Regional Council of Carpenters Local 118.  "She has a long track record of supporting working men and women and their issues. She understands that economic recovery has to reach beyond the very wealthy and the best way to do that is protecting workers rights to organize, fair wages, benefits, and equal pay for equal work. She will fight against the exploitation of workers in the underground economy with an enforcement focus on wage theft and tax fraud. She knows the importance of workforce development, supporting apprenticeship training and investing in highway infrastructure because of the job creation and keeping our roadways safe for travel and commerce.  We need vision and leadership in our next president and Hillary Clinton offers those qualities.”

“I am honored to have earned the endorsement of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America." said Clinton. "Unions like the UBC built the mighty American middle class by creating good-paying jobs and careers across the country.

I have always stood and will always stand with unions like UBC against employer efforts to misclassify workers and steal wages, and against Republican assaults on collective bargaining and the right to organize. When unions are strong, families are strong—and when families are strong, America is strong," Clinton continued.

Earlier this month, the American Federation of Teachers New Hampshire and the National Education Association New Hampshire endorsed Hillary Clinton.  Along with the Carpenters and Joiners, they join a growing list of strong supporters backing Clinton, including Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Governor Maggie Hassan, Congresswoman Annie Kuster, former New Hampshire House Speaker Terie Norelli, Progressive leader Dean Barker, State Senator Dan Feltes, Fomer Obama Co-Chairs, Ned Helms, Congressman Paul Hodes, and Jim Demers, as well as previously announced grassroots leaders, federal, state and local elected officials and civic leaders.
