March 7, 2014--In a
thought-provoking session on criminal justice reform, participants
discussed "the conservative solution to an overreaching legal
system." Participating were Gov. Rick Perry (TX); Grover
Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform; former New York City
Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik; and Pat Nolan, vice president of
Prison Fellowship and a former member of the California State Assembly,
acting as moderator. They discussed such ideas as sentences that
fit the crime, second chances, requiring prison systems to provide
vocational training, and providing mentors. One of the
participants noted that, "Prisons are going to be used as a training
ground one way or another." Nolan said that, "Not only is it a
moral decision, it's a good business decision." He said the issue
gives conservatives "a chance to show we can provide solutions to a
vexing problem."
