2016
U.S. Senate: Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D), first elected in 1986, is retiring after five terms in the Senate. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D), easily won the race to succeed her, defeating Maryland House Minority Whip Kathy Szeliga (R), Dr. Margaret Flowers (G), and write-in candidates by 1,659,907 votes (60.9%) to 972,557 (35.7%) and 89,970 (3.3%).
U.S. House: In the 4th CD (portions of Prince George's and Anne Arundel Cos.), Rep. Donna Edwards (D) unsuccessfully ran for Senate. Former Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown (D), won with 237,501 votes (74.1%) over George McDermott (R) 68,670 (21.4%) Kamesha Clark (G) 8,204 (2.6%) and Ben Krause (L) 5,744 (1.8%). In the 8th CD (Montgomery Co.), Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D) Senate run created another open seat. State Sen. Jamie Raskin (D), won with 220,657 votes (60.6%) over attorney Dan Cox (R) 124,651 (34.2%), consultant Nancy Wallace (G) 11,201 (3.1%) and paramedic Jasen Wunder (L) 7,283 (2.0%)
Ballot Measure: Voters approved the one statewide measure, Question 1 "Maryland Appointments to Fill Vacancies Required to Preserve Political Party Affiliation," by a 72.6% to 27.4% margin.

Overview: Democrats enjoy a more than 2 to 1 registration advantage over Republicans so it was no surprise that Maryland remained solidly in the Democratic column. Maryland was also Clinton's strongest state in the April 26 Northeast primaries.
Clinton amassed a plurality of 734,759 votes (# percentage points), carrying six counties in the Baltimore-to-DC axis (Montgomery, Prince George's, Baltimore, Ann Arundel, Howard and Charles) and Baltimore City; Trump carried 17 counties in Western and Eastern Maryland.
Gov. Larry Hogan (R) was one of the Republican leaders to come out against Trump early on, stating in a June 15, 2016 interview with The Washington Post that he didn't plan to vote for Trump.
Donald Trump addressed the National Guard Association conference in Baltimore on Sept. 12 followed by an unannounced stop at a diner in Dundalk; also on Sept. 12 Mike Pence attended a Washington Redskins football game at FedExField in Landover. Tim Kaine made two visits, speaking at the National Urban League conference in Baltimore on Aug. 4 and doing a fundraiser in Bethesda on Oct. 17. Jill Stein and Ajamu Baraka made a couple of joint appearances, holding an evening rally at the Downtown Cultural Arts Center in Baltimore, on Sept. 16 and doing their second to last rally at University of Maryland in College Park on Nov. 6.

2012 Overview
Maryland remained solidly in the Democratic column as Obama/Biden amassed a plurality of 705,975 votes (26.07 percentage points). Romney carried 16 counties to seven for Obama, but Obama piled up huge margins in Prince George's and Montgomery Counties and Baltimore City. The campaigns encouraged their supporters to help out in the battleground state of Virginia.

2008 Overview
Obama amassed a plurality of 669,605 votes (25.45 percentage points), more than twice that achieved by Kerry in 2004, and carried 6 counties and Baltimore City to 17 counties for McCain. The major focus for Maryland activists was helping out in battleground Virginia. In terms of visits, McCain spoke at the National Guard Association conference in Baltimore on Sept. 21 and appeared at a fundraiser in Baltimore on July 22; Joe Biden appeared at a fundraiser in Baltimore on Sept. 23; and Ralph Nader made a couple of trips.

2000 Overview
Gore comfortably won Maryland's 10 electoral votes, gaining a plurality of 326,985 votes (16.18 percentage points). Gore carried 6 counties and Baltimore City, while Bush won in 17 counties.

Notes: Seven political parties filed with the State Board of Elections to be officially recognized in Maryland for the Nov. 2000 election. Six parties achieved this status and appeared on the ballot (the Natural Law Party failed to gain sufficient signatures).
