Only 12 governorships were at stake, eight held by Democrats and four by Republican. Republicans managed to build on their already strong position, taking over governor's offices in three states (MO, NH and VT), while losing in just one (NC). Of five incumbents seeking re-election only Gov. Pat McCrory (R-NC) was ousted.
Note: As of Nov. 17, Gov. McCrory has not conceded.
