DCCC Statement on Joe Bock Primary Win in IN-02

From Brandon Lorenz of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee:

“Whether it’s her support to privatize Social Security and gamble with the retirement of Hoosiers on Wall Street or her votes to end the Medicare guarantee and raise costs on seniors, Congresswoman Walorski has made it clear she marches in lockstep with the Tea Party and its reckless agenda. Joe Bock will be a fighter for the middle class and hold Congresswoman Walorski accountable for her decision to shut down the federal government and put insurance companies in charge to deny care and raise health care costs.”

FRC Action, Pro-Family Coalition Score Huge Wins in Indiana Legislative Races

Big Price to Pay for Abandoning Natural Marriage

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Family Research Council Action (FRC Action) joined a coalition of pro-family groups in praising Indiana voters for sending a powerful message at the polls yesterday that there is a price to pay for refusing to preserve marriage as the union of a man and a woman. Two Republican House members - Kathy Heuer and Rebecca Kubacki - lost their races by huge margins after voting to deprive voters of the right to vote on the future of marriage. FRC Action partnered with the National Organization for Marriage, CitizenLink, Indiana Family Institute, Indiana Family Action, and American Family Association of Indiana to spread the word about how these incumbents disenfranchised voters.

FRC Action President Tony Perkins released the following statement:

"Indiana voters sent a powerful message that there is a price to pay for denying voters the right to decide the future of marriage. By removing State Reps. Kathy Heuer and Rebecca Kubacki, voters made it very clear that leaving the definition of marriage to activist judges is unacceptable.

"The election outcome reinforces the findings of an FRC-commissioned survey released last month showing three-quarters of Republican voters want their elected officials to uphold natural marriage as the national standard. Voters in Indiana and across the country are now realizing that much more than marriage is on the line. Elected officials can no longer avoid the reality that the redefinition of marriage leads to the loss of our most basic freedoms.

"Redefining natural marriage is about far more than the marriage altar; it is about fundamentally altering society. In the wake of same-sex marriage, religious freedom and parental rights have been lost. Business owners, like florists, bakers and photographers, have been hauled into court, fined and even put out of business for simply refusing to participate in a same-sex wedding. But it doesn't stop there; university professors, sportscasters and even members of the military have been demoted or fired for simply believing marriage is the union of one man and one woman. Families have been impacted as parents have lost the right to determine whose values are taught to their children," concluded Perkins.

Josh Duggar, FRC Action's executive director, said:

"Having spent time at the State Capitol during the debate on the Marriage Protection Amendment, I was saddened to see how some legislators were quite disconnected from the people they represent. Indiana voters did the right thing by holding these elected officials accountable. Voters clearly want to see their elected leaders stand strongly for the very core values that gave rise to our great country," concluded Duggar.

Indiana Secretary of State

Secretary of State Releases Primary Election Voter Turnout Report

Early voting continues to rise in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (June 2, 2014) — Today, Secretary of State Connie Lawson announced that 13 percent or 617,156 of Indiana’s 4.5 million registered voters cast a vote in the May 6 Primary Elections. Indiana saw more Hoosiers opt for early voting during the 2014 Primary Election. During the primary, 16 percent of voters who cast a ballot voted early, compared to 12 percent in 2012 and 11 percent in 2010 and 2008.

“I believe our actual voter turnout numbers may be higher than 13 percent,” said Secretary Lawson. “We are currently in the process of updating our voter list, which will give us clear data on Indiana’s real voter turnout numbers in future elections.”

Indiana saw an increase in the number of counties moving to the cost-saving vote center model. During the primary election, 16 counties chose to use vote centers compared to 7 in the 2012 election cycle. As a state senator, Secretary Lawson authored legislation giving counties the option to establish vote centers, which has the potential to significantly improve efficiency and reduce county election costs. Vote centers consolidate multiple precincts into a single location, allowing counties the opportunity to save on costs associated with hiring poll workers and purchasing voting machines and supplies. Vote center counties also had 13 percent of voters cast ballots in the Primary Election.

“As I traveled throughout Indiana on Election Day, I was impressed with how counties have deployed their vote center operation plans,” said Secretary Lawson.  “Voters showed a positive reaction to the change and appreciated the flexibility in choosing where to vote.”

The complete 2014 Primary Election Turnout and Absentee Chart with voter statistics for each county can be viewed online at http://www.in.gov/sos/elections/primary14/2014PrimaryTurnout.pdf. The report was compiled by the Election Division of the Secretary of State’s office from voter data gathered in Indiana’s 92 counties.

Meet Thom Tillis - the GOP’s newest flawed candidate

Hey folks,

Below please find a quote from me on North Carolina’s newly minted Republican Senate candidate Thom Tillis, followed by a memo from the Hagan campaign on Tillis’ top vulnerabilities:

Thom Tillis spent this primary moving far to the right, embracing positions that, paired with his record, make him a deeply flawed candidate. From gutting education while paying for tax breaks for the wealthy, to axing an equal pay bill and restricting women’s health, Tillis has a track record that simply doesn’t square with North Carolina’s middle class. For the next six months Tillis will have to defend an out-of-touch record that’s anti-middle class, unethical, and at the end of the day, unelectable. That’s a contrast we’re happy to make. - Michael Czin, DNC Press Secretary

Re: Thom Tillis’ Top Vulnerabilities

With the North Carolina GOP Senate primary drawing to a close, it appears State House Speaker Thom Tillis’ special interest allies are dragging him across the finish line in Tuesday night’s primary. Tillis, already the DC insider, is touting himself as a future NRSC chair, which is a prime example of the transparent abandonment of North Carolina that makes him unelectable in November.

Over the next 6 months, Tillis will be forced to defend his divisive and offensive remarks, his abysmal, anti-middle class record in Raleigh, his newest slew of fringe positions, and his heavy load of ethical baggage.

Pattern Of Divisive Statements Are A Liability

Tillis has repeatedly made divisive and offensive comments about North Carolinians, revealing a cynical, out-of-touch disposition that he will have to answer for. National Republicans, who may not realize how out of touch Tillis is, should be nervous about his history of Akin-like “47%” comments, which are a major liability.

  • Teachers Don’t Care About Kids – He gutted education and froze teacher pay, and even once suggested that teachers “don’t care about kids. They don’t care about classrooms. They only care about their jobs and their pensions.”
  • Whining Losers – In attempt to defend his destructive agenda in the face of the throngs of teachers, parents, students, seniors, women, minorities and middle-class families who turned out to protest it, Tillis brushed off their concerns just as quickly as he did during session. Tillis said “what I see from the folks who are opposing our agenda is whining coming from losers.”
  • Divide and Conquer – Tillis was caught on tape in Asheville hashing out his desire to “divide and conquer the people who are on assistance” suggesting that we ought to get certain people “to look down at” unwed mothers who “choose” to be dependent on government. He continued on the topic of single mothers by explaining that “we may end up taking care of those babies, but we are not going to take care of you.”

Tillis’ Record Is Out Of Sync With NC Values

During his time as Speaker, Thom Tillis has racked up an impressive record of putting the special interests first at the expense of North Carolina’s middle class. Tillis promises to run on his “record,” but from now until November, he will be on the stand, forced to defend what the Charlotte Observer called a “damaging agenda” and a “tarnished legacy.” Among the items he will have to defend:

  • Cutting public education by nearly $500 million (perhaps his top and most immediate liability)
  • Handing out tax cuts to the wealthy instead of funding pay raises for NC teachers, who rank 46th in the nation in pay (that tax plan caused a $445 million shortfall that Tillis will have to plug in the session that begins May 14)
  • Killing an equal pay bill to help end gender discrimination in pay
  • Defunding Planned Parenthood and ramming through a bill aimed at closing women’s health clinics under the guise of a motorcycle safety bill
  • Passing a voter access bill that was called the most restrictive in the nation
  • Gutting unemployment insurance for 170,000 North Carolinians
  • Rejecting health care for 500,000 North Carolinians

Even More Unelectable Positions

On top of his indefensible and destructive record in Raleigh, Tillis hobbles out of this primary with an additional slew of positions that make him even more unelectable. Among them:

  • Opposing the federal minimum wage, and even calling an increase that would benefit one million North Carolinians “dangerous”
  • Advocating for the elimination of the Department of Education
  • Admitting he believes states have the authority to ban birth control and supporting a so-called Personhood Amendment that could make some forms of birth control illegal
  • Disagreeing with 97% of scientists in asserting that climate change is not a fact

Heavy Ethical Baggage

Thom Tillis carries an incredibly heavy load of ethical baggage that is not only impossible to defend, but he has been caught lying as he tried to rewrite history on the scandals.

You Pay, Tillis Plays

Last year, emails from Tillis uncovered his work to sell seats on the UNC Board of Governors to political donors, who then rewarded him by donating to his Super PAC. The Raleigh News and Observer reported:

When his fellow Republicans questioned why House Speaker Thom Tillis backed a Democrat to the University of North Carolina Board of Governors in March, the speaker had a simple reason:

R. Doyle Parrish had raised a lot of money.

“I would estimate he is directly responsible for more than $100,000.00 in financial support through personal contributions to my campaign committee and other candidates and through the Hospitality Alliance,” Tillis wrote in a March 21 email to House leaders.

Tillis also strongly supported G.A. Sywassink for the board…Sywassink, owner of a Charlotte freight company, had given $7,500 to Tillis’ campaign for the state House. In June, Sywassink gave $25,000 and Parrish gave $20,000 to the super PAC supporting Tillis’ bid for the U.S. Senate next year.

Also last year, Tillis was caught raking in cash from predatory lenders less than a week after he ushered though a bill to raise lending caps for predatory loans and raise profits for the lenders who offer them. The Associated Press reported:

The man who helped direct a $1.8 million political and lobbying effort for consumer finance lenders is co-hosting a fundraiser for North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis’ fledgling U.S. Senate campaign, less than a week after a bill hiking profits for the industry became state law…

With the speaker’s support, the industry’s bill sailed through the legislature…

The fundraiser’s host laid it out clear as day, explaining, “Did [Tillis] help us? Yes. So I support him.”

Caught Lying About Scandal

In 2012, two top Tillis staffers were forced to resign after they were found having extramarital affairs with lobbyists. One of the staffers was Tillis’ chief of staff and shared an apartment with Tillis, but Tillis denied any knowledge of the affair.

Tillis allowed the staffers to resign and, despite the cause of their resignation, Tillis rewarded them with generous taxpayer-funded severance packages worth almost $20,000. At the time, Tillis defended the payments saying it was important to consider the “human side” and the “difficult transition period” for the disgraced staff.

Fast forward to 2014 and Tillis is attempting to rewrite history, saying he “fired” the staffers in an ad. But despite trying to lie about his scandal-plagued staff, Tillis was called out by PolitiFactFactCheck.Org, the Washington Post Fact Checker, the Asheville Citizen-Timesand the Charlotte Observer.

Over the next 6 months, as general election voters tune it to learn more about Thom Tillis what exactly will they find? A long record of offensive and disturbing comments, an agenda that devastated the middle class, a laundry list of out-of-touch positions, and a history of scandal and pay-to-play

DSCC Statement On Thom Tillis & Tonight’s North Carolina Primary

Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee National Press Secretary Justin Barasky issued the following statement on Thom Tillis and the Republican primary in North Carolina:

“The Koch brothers, Karl Rove, and other Washington special interests spent millions to drag Thom Tillis over the finish line tonight to reward him for implementing an anti-middle class agenda in the North Carolina state legislature.  No one in the country has done more for the Koch brothers than Thom Tillis – cutting public education nearly $500 million, cutting taxes for the wealthy while refusing pay raises for teachers, and killing an equal pay bill.

“Throughout the primary Tillis embraced extreme, far-right tea party positions such as opposing a federal minimum wage, advocating for the elimination of the Department of Education, stating he believes states have the authority to ban birth control, and supporting personhood legislation that would make common forms of birth control illegal.  For the next six months Thom Tillis will be forced to defend his record as Speaker, his fringe, far-right positions on the issues, a long list of divisive and offensive remarks he’s made on the campaign trail, and an ever growing load of ethical baggage ridden with scandal and pay to play politics.  If elected to the Senate, it’s clear Thom Tillis would continue pushing an agenda that would be good for his special interest friends like the Koch brothers and bad for North Carolina’s middle class families, seniors, students, and women.”
National Republican Senatorial Committee

Statement from National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Jerry Moran (R-KS) on Thom Tillis’ victory tonight in North Carolina:

"Tonight voters recognized that Thom Tillis is a strong leader with a history of getting things done for North Carolina, a strong contrast with Kay Hagan who, beyond ObamaCare and being a rubber stamp for Barack Obama, has little to show for her time in Washington.

"Kay Hagan promised to be an independent voice for North Carolina, but instead has voted with President Obama an astounding 96 percent of the time. It's far from the only promise that Kay Hagan broke to voters in North Carolina. By November, this race will be a clear contrast between an effective candidate versus an ineffective Senator.

“Congratulations to Thom Tillis on his well-deserved win. On to victory in November."

Statement on North Carolina Republican Primary

Statement from American Crossroads President and CEO Steven Law:

“We congratulate Thom Tillis on his victory tonight. It was clear from the start that Thom Tillis is the only proven conservative who can defeat Kay Hagan and take on President Obama’s liberal agenda, and tonight’s victory is the first step toward making that happen.

“We engaged early and worked closely with other center-right groups to help Tillis overcome a late dirty-tricks campaign orchestrated by Hagan and national Democrats. We expect Hagan’s tactics will get even more desperate, but we intend to hold her accountable for the mess “

DCCC Statement on Laura Fjeld Primary Win in NC-06

From David Bergstein of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee:

“Republicans are fighting an expensive, divisive contest that has already alienated independent voters and dragged their candidates far from mainstream North Carolina values – and now they are continuing their battle to be part of the problem in Washington. Whether it was in business or at UNC, Laura Fjeld’s commitment to solving problems and getting results is exactly the kind of refreshing voice that North Carolina families want from their representative in Washington.”

SUBJECT: Ohio Primary Results

With President Obama’s approval ratings continuing to tank nationwide, Reps. Bill Johnson and Dave Joyce are in a strong position to carry both of their districts this November. In both OH-06 and OH-14, President Obama lost to Mitt Romney and received less than 50% of the vote in both districts. Since the 2012 election, President Obama’s numbers have continued to decline in the state and Democrat candidates across the country have tried to distance themselves from his policies. Unfortunately, national Democrats have made it impossible to escape the bad policies coming out of Washington.

Ohioans are looking for a check and balance to the out of control government overreach by President Obama and Nancy Pelosi. Republicans are providing responsible leadership by fighting Washington’s burdensome mandates, championing efforts to boost American energy production and creating a better environment for private-sector job growth and Ohioans are responding to their idea of a better future for America.

If Democrats were to have any hope of winning the House, they would have to demonstrate they can be competitive in the Buckeye State which has been called the epicenter of American politics.

INCUMBENTS

OH-06: Rep. Bill Johnson, R vs. Jennifer Garrison, D

Retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Bill Johnson will square off against former state Rep. Jennifer Garrison who has run a lackluster campaign, having just $238k in the bank at the end of the first quarter. Cook Political Reports says Democrats will have “a very uphill fight” to win this district they lost in 2012, even though Obama won the state. In Congress, Rep. Bill Johnson has earned a reputation as a commonsense leader who has lead the fight against Obama’s War on Coal and ObamaCare, which is why he defeated former Rep. Charlie Wilson, 50 percent to 45 percent in 2012.

Geography: PVI: R+8; Romney 55.3%; Obama 42.7%. The 6th District runs along the Southeast border of Ohio but has become an increasingly Republican stronghold. Several Democrat precincts near Youngstown and the liberal college town of Athens were removed and replaced with reliably Republican territory near Zanesville to the west. Cook Political Report rates this race as Likely Republican, and Rothenberg rates it as Republican Favored.

Resources: As of the 1st quarter, Johnson had $961K COH compared to Garrison’s paltry $238K COH.

OH-14: Rep. Dave Joyce, R vs. Michael Wager, D

Congressman Dave Joyce has been a strong independent voice for Ohio families during his first year in Washington. Bringing his commonsense approach to Congress, Joyce has been a leading advocate for eastern Ohio and was able pass legislation that will increase Great Lakes funding which is so important to the region.

According to the Rothenberg Political Report, even Democrat strategist admit that Wager “needs to mount a stronger campaign to knock off the incumbent.” While Wager was a top fundraiser for Sherrod Brown, Wager’s fundraising ability has been abysmal. To make matters worse, Wager has also tied himself to the most extreme liberal policies of the Democrat Party – whether it’s his support of ObamaCare or his desire to see Nancy Pelosi as Speaker, Wager has made himself an extremist in this moderate Ohio district.

Geography: PVI: R+4; Romney 51%; Obama 47.6%. Counties within the 14th District: Ashtabula, Lake, Geauga, eastern Cuyahoga, northern Trumbull, northern Portage, and northeastern Summit.Cook Political Report rates this race as Likely Republican, and Rothenberg rates it as Lean Republican.

Resources:As of the end of the 1st quarter, Joyce has a huge fundraising lead over Wager. Joyce has $1.072 million COH compared to Wager’s $485K COH.

RGA Statement on Ohio Gubernatorial Primary

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Republican Governors Association issued the following statement on the outcome of tonight’s Ohio gubernatorial primary election:

“Ohio is a better, stronger state today because of John Kasich’s good work as governor,” said RGA Chairman Chris Christie. “Taking it upon himself to right the state’s ship, Governor Kasich has led Ohio to its lowest unemployment rate in six years, a $3 billion reduction in overall tax burden, and hundreds of thousands of new jobs. By putting growth and prosperity over politics and posturing, Kasich has reinvigorated Ohio’s once-struggling economy, delivering results that give each and every Ohioan a shot at a good job, a better life and a piece of the American Dream.”

“Ohio’s path forward is built on the pro-jobs, pro-growth policies Governor Kasich has implemented, not on the kind of far left, tax-and-spend policies by which Ed FitzGerald governs Cuyahoga County and which would surely cripple the now-thriving state,” said RGA Executive Director Phil Cox. “Since his first days on the trail, FitzGerald has proven himself to be utterly unprepared to be governor, and his record simply doesn’t stack up against the real, meaningful success Governor Kasich is achieving for the Buckeye State.”

Ohio Republicans Ready to Continue Ohio’s Comeback

Ohio Republican Party Chairman Matt Borges issued the following statement today following the May Primary Election.

“Ohio Republicans are coming together tonight as we look forward to sharing the story of our state’s comeback over the last three years.  Since Republicans took office nearly 250,000 jobs have been created, our unemployment rate is at its lowest point since 2006, the state’s Rainy Day Fund has been fully restored, and taxes have been reduced by nearly $3 billion. After leaving behind an $8 billion budget shortfall and 350,000 lost jobs, Democrats have fought Ohio’s comeback nearly every step of the way.
Voters will have a clear choice in November. Do they want to continue the Republican path of job creation, lower taxes and fiscal sanity or do they want to return to the Democratic days of job loss and budget holes?

There is still work left to do, but Ohio’s Republican office holders have our state headed in the right direction.”
