RGA Statement on the Maine Gubernatorial Primary

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Republican Governors Association issued the following statement on the Maine primary:

“As governors, our job is to run our states as effectively as possible with our eyes on the next generation, and that’s exactly what Governor Paul LePage has done in Maine,” said RGA Chairman Chris Christie. “In his first term, Governor LePage oversaw the creation of over 15,000 jobs, brought Maine’s unemployment to its lowest level since 2008, and focused on lifting Mainers by giving those in poverty a hand up, not a handout. Governor LePage is putting Mainers first, and his strong record is a show of significant progress in a state that needed serious leadership. The Republican Governors Association is proud to support Governor LePage’s re-election.”

“Maine is back on solid footing thanks to Governor LePage, but Mike Michaud hasn’t seemed to notice,” said RGA Executive Director Phil Cox. “The liberal policies he’s promoting are the same policies that failed Maine in the past:  higher taxes, more regulation, and bigger, more intrusive government. Now is a time to move forward, not back. Maine can’t afford to elect a governor like Mike Michaud.”

NRCC Memo: Maine Primary Results

SUBJECT: MAINE PRIMARY RESULTS

Maine’s Second Congressional District offers one of Republican’s best pickup opportunities in the country. Between the disastrous implantation of ObamaCare and the president’s continued mismanagement of both domestic and foreign policy, Maine voters will have a stark choice between a candidate like Bruce Poliquin, who can help provide a check and balance on the White House, and a candidate like Emily Cain, who will be a rubber stamp for Nancy Pelosi and all the problems in Washington.

ME-02: Bruce Poliquin, R vs. Emily Cain, D

Bruce Poliquin is a self-made businessman who managed companies that created thousands of jobs, and he helped grow the investments of Maine workers employed by Bath Ironworks and International Paper. Later, as Maine’s Treasurer, Poliquin was able to secure the pensions of Maine workers through smart reforms that also allowed the state to lower taxes on middle class families while also reducing unnecessary government spending. Poliquin’s experiences make him uniquely qualified to stand up for Maine workers in Congress and he will continue his work keeping taxes low on middle class families, ensuring that they have a safe and secure retirement, all while being able to provide opportunities for the next generation of Mainers.

Emily Cain, on the other hand, supports a radical plan to fund the Pelosi agenda through a massive tax hike that would specifically target middle income families. In addition to wanting to raise marginal tax rates on those families, Cain believes that we should increase wasteful government spending by reinstating the marriage penalty, fully reinstating the death tax, cutting in half both the child tax credit and the adoption tax credit, eliminating the current tax deduction for higher education, and reducing the eligibility for the earned-income tax credit and the amount of money one could put aside for retirement. Simply put, Cain’s tax hikes would make everything more expensive for Maine’s middle class families that are simply trying to get by now while saving for a better future.

Geography: PVI: D+1; Obama 52.9% – Romney 44.4% Maine’s 2nd Congressional district comprises nearly 80% of the state’s total land area and is the largest district east of the Mississippi River. The district includes the cities of Bangor, Lewiston, Auburn, and Presque Isle. The Cook Political Report rates the seat as Lean D and the Rothenberg Report rate it as Democrat Favored.

DCCC Chairman Steve Israel Statement on ME-02

DCCC Chairman Steve Israel released the following statement about the general election in Maine’s 2nd  Congressional District:

“I congratulate Emily Cain on her victory tonight. Emily Cain is a problem solver who will put Maine’s middle class families and seniors first, and she is deeply committed to helping to create more good jobs and boost the region’s economy. In this solidly Democratic district, Emily will continue to focus on the right priorities  and be a stand-out voice for the people of Maine.”

“On the other hand, Bruce Poliquin wants to stack the deck for the special interests and the ultra-wealthy at the expense of the middle class and his irresponsible agenda is completely out of touch with the voters of this district who have elected a Democrat to Congress for the last two decades.”

District Background:

  • Mainers have elected a Democrat to represent this district in Congress in every election since 1994.
  • In 2010, the most challenging year for Democrats in recent history, Mike Michaud was re-elected by a 10-point margin.
  • President Obama won this district by a 9-point margin over Mitt Romney in 2012 and a 10-point margin over John McCain in 2008.
  • A Republican lost by a 16-point margin in the most recent election.

RGA Statement on the Nevada Gubernatorial Primary

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Republican Governors Association issued the following statement on the outcome of the Nevada gubernatorial primary election:

“Four years ago, Nevada was down and out, and in major need of a leader who could put the state on the right path. Governor Brian Sandoval has proven himself up to that challenge, and he’s delivering in a big way,” said RGA Chairman Chris Christie. “Job growth is strong, unemployment is dropping at historic rates, and Nevada’s children have an ally in the statehouse who is committed to a brighter future through meaningful education reform. Nevada’s Comeback is strong and Governor Sandoval’s work has earned him record high approval ratings. He is set on continuing the progress the state has seen on his watch, and the Republican Governors Association is proud to support his re-election.”

An Embarrassing Night For Reid

Good afternoon –
Despite all the glowing stories about Senator Harry Reid’s ability to deliver in the Silver State, last night was a rough night for him as “none of the above” won the Democrat gubernatorial nomination.  If you’re reporting on this news below is a statement from the RNC:

“In an embarrassing blow for Harry Reid, Democrat primary voters in the Silver State selected “none of the above” as their gubernatorial nominee.  Reid’s inability to deliver a credible candidate shows he’s losing his step in Nevada.”  Jahan Wilcox, RNC Spokesman

BACKGROUND …
Nevada Democrats Chose ‘None of These Candidates’ in Primary:  “Elections have historically been defined by their winners and losers – but on Tuesday a primary in Nevada returned a disheartening result for all the candidates: nobody won. Voters in the state’s Democratic primary for governor were so unimpressed by the eight men on offer that the most popular option on the ballot paper was “none of these candidates,” which received 30 percent of the vote, according to figures from The Associated Press.”  (Alexander Smith, Nevada Democrats Chose ‘None of These Candidates’ in Primary, NBC News, 06/11/14)

Nevada Democrats Select ‘None Of These Candidates’ In Gubernatorial Primary:  “Many Nevada Democrats turned up their noses Tuesday at the eight candidates battling for the right to face Gov. Brian Sandoval in November, with the “none of these candidates” option receiving the most votes.  With 80 percent of precincts reporting early Wednesday, the “none of these candidates option” had received over 20,000 votes (30 percent), putting it over 3,600 votes ahead of the man who will face Sandoval in November, former State Economic Development commissioner Robert Goodman. Goodman received 25 percent of the vote.  Nevada allows its voters to select “none of these” candidates in elections for President and statewide offices. The last time the option received the most votes was in 1976, when Republicans preferred it to both candidates running in a primary for the House of Representatives.”  (Nevada Democrats Select ‘None Of These Candidates’ In Gubernatorial Primary, Fox News, 06/11/14)

In Nevada, Nobody Wins:  Nevada Democratic leaders acknowledged earlier this year that they had failed to recruit a credible candidate to face GOP Gov. Brian Sandoval in the fall. And on Tuesday, Silver State Democratic primary voters agreed, casting more votes for the state’s quirky “none of these candidates” option than any one of the eight actual humans on the ballot. “None of these candidates” earned 30 percent of the vote when The Associated Press called the race, outpacing the leading actual candidate, Robert Goodman, a retired state Economic Development commissioner from Las Vegas who’s run statewide twice before and shares a last name with the Vegas mayoral dynasty, at 25 percent.  (Steve Shepard, In Nevada, Nobody Wins, Politico, 06/11/14)

SUBJECT: NEVADA PRIMARY RESULTS

Nevada Democrats find themselves in a difficult position going into November. Once deemed a strong candidate in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, Erin Bilbray’s campaign has since fizzled out. Embarrassing gaffes and staff turnover have put Bilbray’s campaign on the defensive. Bilbray’s campaign has become so bad that it has been openly mocked on local political television programs. In Nevada’s 4th Congressional District, Steven Horsford has proven to be a loyal foot soldier for Barack Obama and Nancy Pelosi. A staunch supporter of ObamaCare and reckless spending, Horsford will find it difficult to explain his voting record to his constituents.

NV-03: Joe Heck, R v. Erin Bilbray, D

Dr. Joe Heck has represented Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District honorably over his two terms in office. A strong voice for Nevada’s middle class, Heck has made it a priority to help unemployed Nevadans and victims of foreclosures. Putting the interests of Nevada families ahead of Washington politicians and special interests has been a staple of Heck’s time in Congress. Joe Heck is a veteran, a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, a former small businessman, and even a former volunteer firefighter. Joe Heck’s record in Congress has earned him the praise of the Las Vegas Review Journal for his work to simplify the tax code, address the government’s budget problems, and reform the congressional pension system.

Erin Bilbray, originally a top Washington recruit, has failed to gain any traction due to staff turnover and a series of painful gaffes. Bilbray infamously called Rep. Joe Heck ‘Un-American’ and ‘liked’ a racist Facebook post. Bilbray’s campaign collapse has been so bad, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Nancy Pelosi’s Super PAC have refused to reserve any television ad time in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District.

Geography: PVI: EVEN; Obama 49.3% – Romney 48.5%. Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District is located in the south Las Vegas suburbs and includes Henderson. Both the Cook Political Report and the Rothenberg Report rate it as Lean Republican.

NV-04: Cresent Hardy, R v. Steven Horsford, D

Steven Horsford’s voting record doesn’t match his district. Since being elected to Congress, Horsford has toed the Democrat Party line, regardless of its impact on hardworking families in his district. Horsford has been a strong advocate for ObamaCare and has voted for trillions in new taxes and spending. Cresent Hardy’s commitment to fiscal responsibility and common sense policies will give voters a clear choice in November.

Geography: PVI: D+4; Obama 54.2% – Romney 43.5%. Nevada’s 4th Congressional District is located in the northern Las Vegas suburbs. The Cook Political Report rates it as Likely Democratic and the Rothenberg Report rate it as a Safe Democrat.

CRESENT HARDY BIOGRAPHY

Born and raised in Mesquite, Nevada, Cresent Hardy has always worked hard to not only take care of himself and his family, but to give back to his community. His commitment to public service is clear – he has served as the Mesquite Public Works Director, a member of the Virgin Valley Water District, and as a member of the Mesquite City Council. Cresent Hardy brings over two decades of distinguished public service experience to his campaign for Nevada’s 4th Congressional District.

A fifth-generation resident of Mesquite – his grandfather was the first baby born in the town – Hardy knows the importance of building a strong, safe community for families. Growing up in a farming community taught Cresent the value of hard work at a young age. As a small business owner, Cresent Hardy knows what it takes to create jobs, make payroll, and meet a budget. The value of a hard day’s work and being self-reliant helped him to succeed in his career as a licensed contractor and small business owner.

He and his wife, Peri, have been married for 30 years, and are the parents of four wonderful children.

DCCC Chairman Steve Israel Statement on NV-03

DCCC Chairman Steve Israel released the following statement about the general election in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District:

“I congratulate Erin Bilbray on her victory tonight in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District primary election. Erin is a proud product of Southern Nevada who is a problem-solver dedicated to standing up for middle class families and working across the aisle for commonsense solutions. In contrast, Congressman Joe Heck’s out-of-touch agenda has let Nevadans down at every turn – from shutting down the government to blocking immigration reform to supporting the reckless Republican budget that helps special interests and shifts a greater burden to the middle class – it's clear that Heck’s agenda hurts Nevada families.”

RGA Statement on the South Carolina Gubernatorial Primary

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Republican Governors Association issued the following statement on the South Carolina gubernatorial primary:

“Governor Nikki Haley is getting the job done in South Carolina and her leadership is making a clear difference in the direction of the state,” said RGA Chairman Chris Christie. “In Governor Haley’s South Carolina, more people are working than ever in the history of the state, unemployment is at its lowest point since 2001, and businesses looking for a place to invest and succeed are eager to put down roots in the low-tax, growth-oriented Palmetto State. As Governor Haley often puts it, it’s a great day in South Carolina, and the Republican Governors Association is proud to support her re-election campaign.”

“The results Governor Haley has achieved speak volumes of her leadership and her devotion to the people of South Carolina,” said RGA Executive Director Phil Cox. “Vincent Sheheen’s priorities are not nearly as clear. Sheheen fought to put violent criminals back on the streets, and he supports expanding ObamaCare in the state. ObamaCare threatens to cripple small businesses and force out good jobs that South Carolinians need. Vincent Sheheen is the wrong choice for South Carolina.”

DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s Statement on House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s Primary Defeat

Washington, DC – DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz issued the following statement today on House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s primary defeat:

"Tonight's result in Virginia settles the debate once and for all - the Tea Party has taken control of the Republican Party. Period. When Eric Cantor, who time and again has blocked common sense legislation to grow the middle class, can't earn the Republican nomination, it's clear the GOP has redefined 'far right.' Democrats on the other hand have nominated a mainstream candidate who will proudly represent this district and I look forward to his victory in November."

DCCC Chairman Steve Israel Statement on Eric Cantor’s Defeat

DCCC Chairman Steve Israel statement on Congressman Eric Cantor’s primary defeat in Virginia’s 7th Congressional District:

“We all saw how far outside the mainstream this Republican Congress was with Eric Cantor at the helm, now we will see them run further to the far right with the Tea Party striking fear into the heart of every Republican on the ballot and cementing the dysfunction that has paralyzed this Congress and prevented them from taking any action to help middle class families.  While House Republicans are racing to the right, Democrats are focused on a mainstream agenda that strengthens the middle class and makes this economy work for every American family. Eric Cantor is the personification of frustration with Washington and House Republicans should be terrified of the backlash from the voters who have been alienated by their race to the right.”

Statement of RPV Chairman Pat Mullins on Completion of 2014 GOP Ticket

RPV Chairman Pat Mullins issued the following statement:

"Congratulations to Congressman Rob Wittman and Dave Brat on their wins in the Republican primaries tonight. I look forward to working with both of them this year as we work to grow our Republican majority in the House of Representatives!"

"I also want to thank Majority Leader Eric Cantor - my Congressman for all of his 14 years in office - for his service to Virginia. During his legislative career he has been a tireless advocate for the Commonwealth and his constituents, and I hope he remains a strong and active member of party.

"With the conclusion of these two races, our ticket for 2014 is complete. I can say without reservation that each of our candidates is highly-qualified, dedicated, and committed to the Commonwealth of Virginia and her people. And for our 4 challengers, they're all going to make much better public servants than the Democrats they're going to replace!"

"As I said at the conclusion of our 2014 Convention in Roanoke, a unified Republican effort is all but unstoppable. With our ticket completed, we move on to the General Election unified, and ready to work."

"One team, one fight, with one goal - victory!"

Cantor's Primary Loss Spells Doom for Immigration Reform Legislation

Washington, D.C. – Earlier today, after a one-issue campaign on immigration run by his challenger David Brat, Eric Cantor (R-VA), Majority Leader, was deafeated in his primary by his Tea Party challenger.  Cantor was accused of pushing for "amnesty" despite not pushing anything to a vote, and his loss is the biggest upset in politics this year so far.

"Obama has delayed administrative relief through the summer to give the House more time," said Cesar Vargas.  "In response, Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) was voted out due to being 'too soft on immigration,' and he ran on 'blocking amnesty for illegal aliens.' This shows there is no chance of getting anything done legislatively on the subject through the summer, after which it would be difficult to get anything done with presidential speculation beginning.  Obama offered the House another chance and they are making it very clear they have no intention of taking it: he should offer deportation relief, and other forms of administrative relief, now."
