Considers run for Senate seat opened up by retirement of Sen. Patrick Moynihan.
Jan. 29 - Announces intention to run for governor.  Jan. 30 - Files to establish campaign committee.
Sept. 3 - Before the Democratic state convention announces he is withdrawing from the governor's campaign and endorsing Carl McCall.
Mid-year - Cuomo and Kennedy separate, after she has an affair.

Oct. - Divorce finalized.
Sept. 18 - Defeats Mark Green in the Democratic primary for Attorney General.
Nov. - Elected Attorney General def. Jeanine Pirro by 58.3% to 39.3%.


Early reports that Gov. Patterson would appoint Cuomo to replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Senate prove incorrect; on Jan. 23 he announces choice is Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand.
