RNC provides 50 more debate tickets for CU-Boulder students, faculty

The Republican National Committee has informed the University of Colorado Boulder that it will provide 50 additional student and faculty tickets for Wednesday’s Republican presidential candidate debate.

The RNC had already provided 100 tickets for university use, and has now carved out an additional 50 tickets from the overall allotment at the Coors Events Center debate site. The size of the ticketed audience remains at just over 1,000 people.

“We are grateful to the RNC for responding to our request to allow more students and faculty to witness this historic event on our campus,” said CU-Boulder Chancellor Philip P. DiStefano. “In addition to those attending the debate, we have many related opportunities for our students, whether that’s attending a watch party, participating in a faculty-led discussion of the issues, volunteering with CNBC’s production or attending classroom presentations led by prominent journalists.”

The university will continue to distribute student and faculty tickets in the format it has used previously. Tickets will be distributed to faculty and students whose areas of study have a direct educational tie to the American election process, politics, its media coverage and the economy - which is the topic of the debate.

The provost will consult with the deans and offer faculty members the opportunity to attend and invite four students to attend with each of the faculty members. Additionally, some tickets have also been provided directly to the CU Student Government to distribute as they deem appropriate to students.

Wednesday’s event titled "Your Money, Your Vote: The Republican Presidential Debate” will be broadcast to a worldwide audience on CNBC.

Jindal Senior Strategist Rips NBC Debate Criteria

From Curt Anderson, Senior Advisor to Jindal for President:

Three days ago NBC’s Chuck Todd was quoted in a story (in Politico) saying this about the likely criteria for the October 28 Republican Primary debate:

"You can do it a couple different ways. I don't believe in setting a number. I think maybe you come up with 'oh are you at 5 percent or more in Iowa or New Hampshire' you can create a sort of floor, no more 4-percenters get in, no more 3-percenters get in."

Frankly, that is a pretty logical statement from Chuck Todd in my opinion.  After all, Iowa and New Hampshire are the first places where the actual voters will have a say in the process.

So today of course, on an RNC conference call with campaigns, CNBC announced their criteria for the main debate would NOT include anything about the early states.

Instead, they have opted for 3% nationally, and for the undercard debate 1% nationally.   So much for Iowa and New Hampshire, they don’t matter now apparently.  And so much for the “no more 3-percenters”.

What happened to the notion of measuring candidate progress in the early states of Iowa and New Hampshire?  Did they somehow become irrelevant in the last three days?

What was the RNC’s role in this?  When pressed on that question by one of the campaigns (not Jindal’s) the RNC would only say that these are CNBC’s criteria, and the RNC spokesman refused to answer a follow up question about the RNC’s involvement in setting the criteria.

And don’t forget this, a few days ago the RNC Chairman floated the idea of getting rid of the current early state process in favor of large regional primaries.  Perhaps they long for the idea of a just a national primary which would enable candidates to not have to actually go out and mingle with real voters, making it easier for an establishment candidate who has the most money to simply purchase the nomination with a blizzard of advertising.

The genius of our current process is that it forces candidates to run the gauntlet, it forces candidates to actually meet with voters, it forces candidates to prove over time that they have the dexterity to withstand the rigors of winning a general election.   That should be the true winnowing process.  We do not have a national primary today, so measuring only national polls is absurd and illogical.  Other than that, it makes perfect sense.

Jindal Campaign Senior Staff to Make Case Against Delusional Debate Criteria

BATON ROUGE — Jindal campaign senior strategist Curt Anderson, campaign manager Timmy Teepell and pollster Wes Anderson will hold a call with reporters tomorrow to lay out a case against the RNC’s delusional debate criteria that excludes the importance of early states.

Curt Anderson said, “The current criteria ignores those polling higher in early states. As you know, the first votes are cast in Iowa, where Governor Jindal is currently at 6 percent and tied for 5th place. Right now, there are candidates in the debate who are polling lower than Jindal in Iowa. That just doesn’t make sense. Sure, national polls are interesting, but since we do not have a national primary, they’re not predictive of who will win the nomination. No Republican candidate in the modern era – in at least 50 years – has ever been nominated without winning either Iowa or New Hampshire. The current criteria should be changed to reflect that."

WHAT: Call with Jindal senior staff on delusional debate criteria
