Jake Tapper to moderate CNN's first GOP debate

Jake Tapper will moderate CNN's first Republican presidential primary debate, he announced on Sunday.

Tapper, the host of the network's "State of the Union" Sunday show and "The Lead" on weekdays, was picked to lead the event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library on Sept. 16.

The prime-time debate will actually be split into two parts: One with the candidates that national polls rank as the top 10 GOP contenders, and one with the candidates who didn't make that cut.

The broad GOP field has presented a challenge for both Fox News and CNN as debate hosts.

Fox News announced a plan for an August 6 debate that would only include the 10 candidates that were at the top of the heap, as determined by an average of national polls.

Fox's proposed criteria created the most consternation, partly because it is hosting the first debate, partly because it is a favorite of conservatives, and partly because its rules are more restrictive than CNN's.

Some Republican Party leaders in Iowa and New Hampshire have said they feel the use of national polls stomps on their roles as the first in the nation caucus and primary states, respectively.

Tapper announced that he'll moderate the debate on Sunday, at the end of his first show as CNN's new "State of the Union" host.

Salem Media Group & CNN Team Up for Republican Presidential Primary Debates

CAMARILLO, Calif., Feb. 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Salem Media Group (NASDAQ: SALM), announced today that it will team up with CNN as the exclusive radio outlet to broadcast three GOP presidential primary debates, sanctioned by the Republican National Committee. Salem will air the debates live with special pre- and post-debate coverage on the Salem Radio Network, the company's NewsTalk stations, and conservative news and opinion websites.

"We are pleased to be working with CNN," said David Santrella, President of Broadcast Media at Salem. "I am confident that both the access to our audiences and the incorporation of Salem talent will make the debates more accessible for the American electorate."

The first of the three debates will take place September 16th at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. Salem's nationally syndicated radio talk show host Hugh Hewitt will join in the Q&A of this debate. Hewitt is a 25-year veteran of radio and broadcast journalism.

Hewitt will also broadcast special editions of his program pre- and post-debate. At the conclusion of the debate, candidates will be invited to join Hewitt to talk candidly about the event and the pressing issues facing the nation.

"I am delighted to be included with journalists posing questions as part of one of America's finest political traditions -the presidential debate," said Hewitt. "These debates come at a critical time, and good questions will allow Republican primary voters the opportunity to see and hear their would-be nominees provide answers to issues that genuinely concern them. Any reporter who is also a political junkie welcomes the chance to be on such a panel, which of course I do."

Additional Salem national radio hosts will be announced later as leading participants in future debate coverage. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus stated, "I'm thrilled that Salem will partner with three of our Republican primary debates that will be aired on CNN. When we set out to improve the debates, I promised conservative media would be part of the process. REAGAN FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES PARTNERSHIP WITH CNN FOR
GOP PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE; SEPT 16, 2015

Simi Valley, CA The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation (www.reaganfoundation.org) announced today that it has joined forces with CNN (www.cnn.com) to host its GOP presidential candidates debate in 2015.  The debate will be held on September 16, 2015 at the Reagan Library.   Further details regarding the debate will be released in the coming months.

“Over thirty five years ago, Ronnie announced his candidacy for higher office because he believed that the citizens of this country wanted a president who could inspire,” said former First Lady Nancy Reagan. “I believe with all my heart that the country, and the world, prospered under his leadership.  It is time to find a new leader, and I’m so pleased that the Reagan Foundation, just as it has in the last two presidential elections, will be hosting a candidates’ debate to do just that.”

This is the second time that the Reagan Foundation has partnered with CNN for a presidential debate.  The first was held at the Reagan Library on January 30, 2008 and was the final GOP presidential debate before the 2008 “Super-Tuesday” primary in California and several other key states.

“As the GOP hopefuls begin to line up for the 2016 election, we are pleased to announce CNN is partnering again with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation,” said Jeff Zucker, President of CNN Worldwide. “President Reagan is frequently cited as a source of inspiration for many Republican candidates, so we can think of no better venue from which to bring this historic event to viewers and voters.”

TO HOST GOP PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE IN 2015

Simi Valley, CA – The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation announced today that potential GOP presidential candidates will be invited to participate in a televised debate at the Reagan Library on September 16, 2015.

“Ronnie would be so pleased to know that his presidential library continues to attract America’s leaders to discuss the future of the country he loved so dearly,” said former First Lady Nancy Reagan. “While the candidates are still considering whether or not they will seek America’s highest office, we are less than a year away from presidential debates that will start the national conversation on important issues. I can’t think of a better way to honor my husband than to keep the tradition of Reagan Library-hosted
debates alive.”
