Twenty-Five City Mayors and Elected Officials Declare Latino Voter Registration Month

Mayors Recommit to GOTV Among One of the Fastest Growing Demographics

Washington, DC – Today, as part of National Voter Registration Day, 25 city mayors and elected officials issued a proclamation declaring Latino Voter Registration Month to encourage Latino voters to register and to remind Latinos to get out and vote in November.

This effort is part of a national initiative led by Mi Familia Vota, SEIU, Voto Latino, and iAmerica, to encourage broad civic engagement participation among Latino voters.

The proclamation coincided with today’s celebration of National Voter Registration Day, a public education campaign by Latino advocacy groups and organizations representing workers and all communities of color, and Hispanic Heritage Month, which takes place from September 15 to October 15, where we recognize the contributions of Latinos to the U.S. and celebrate Latino culture and heritage.

“Voting is an act of hope that ties the individual to the community at large, that ties us together. Voting by people of color, working people, young people and other under-represented groups is fundamental to the exercise of democratic elections,” said Rocio Sáenz, international executive vice president at SEIU.

“Every Latino vote cast is a vote for our families and for our community – in essence, fundamental American values,” said Ben Monterroso, executive director of Mi Familia Vota. “The stakes are high this year and Latino voters have the power to elect the next President of the United States, members of Congress, and local elected officials that reflect their values. We must do everything possible to ensure that every Latino eligible voter registers to vote and makes their voice heard on November 8 and most importantly, builds real political power to ensure systemic change occurs.”

“Thank you to the mayors who recognize the power of the Latino voice in shaping this country,” said Maria Teresa Kumar, president and CEO of Voto Latino. “National Voter Registration Day, cofounded by Voto Latino in 2012, is a day to come together and make sure every American is counted on Election Day. In 2016, our country will see the greatest number of Latinos eligible to vote, and we know there are millions who still haven’t registered which is why we developed VoterPal, an app that makes registering fast and easy.”

ORLANDO, Fla. – All Star Boxing and Mi Familia Vota announced today a new and unprecedented partnership that seeks to promote civic participation among Latino families through Boxeo Telemundo, the leading boxing show on Spanish television.

Boxeo Telemundo will air civic engagement promotions in Tampa and Kissimmee beginning June 24th and July 15th, respectively, and in Mexico come July 1st and July 8th.

“We want to use boxing, the second most popular sport among Latinos, to engage, inform, and mobilize the community to participate in November’s election and beyond. The stakes are too high this year and we want to make sure that the voice of the Latino community is heard loud and clear at the ballot box,” said Rubén de Jesus, director of operations at All Star Boxing, Inc.

The campaign will feature promotional ads where boxers will encourage Latinos to fulfill their civic duties, information about how to register to vote, and on-site voter registration events during fights.

“We are excited to partner with Boxeo Telemundo as we continue to advance our mission to build Latino political power across the country,” said Ben Monterroso, executive director of Mi Familia Vota.

“This partnership is a prime example of how Latino organizations can unite to ensure that our community is empowered and motivated. We want to make sure that every eligible voter participates and helps elect candidates who will work and fight for the issues that affect our community,” said Monterroso.

“As a Mexican-American living in Los Angeles with a father who still lives in Mexico City, it is important for me this year to do my part to help educate my fellow Latinos on the importance of voting,” said World Boxing Organization Latino Champion, Ricardo Rodríguez.
