Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) Speaks at The George Washington University |
Nov. 14, 2013--U.S. Sen. Bernie
Sanders (I-VT) spoke to students at The George Washington
University. Rather than giving a talk on recent events or
happenings in Congress,
Sanders asked the students what they consider to be the key questions
facing the country; he then guided the subsequent discussion in accord
with his progressive
views. Sanders, a former mayor of Burlington, VT (1981-89), served eight terms in the U.S. House and was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2006. In October he made a four-day trip to the South holding town hall meetings on the theme of "The Fight for Economic Justice!" in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. He is featured on the cover of the November issue of The Progressive magazine "Bernie Sanders Takes on the Oligarchs.") Progressives are casting about for an alternative to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is seen by many observers as the inevitable 2016 Democratic presidential nominee. Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) are among those most frequently mentioned. Warren was featured recently on the cover of The New Republic ("Hillary's Nightmare"). |
