U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts said Thursday he is supporting fellow Republican senator Marco Rubio in his bid for president.

“I think he’s the best man of the candidates that are available to us now,” Roberts said. “I know him and I’ve seen his work in the Senate, which I think has been unique.”

Roberts touted the Florida senator’s ability to inspire and unify Republicans across the country.
“He can give a very inspirational message. We need a president who will engage and be inspirational, be positive,” Roberts said. “He keeps talking about growing the Republican Party.”
Roberts told the story of a senatorial fundraiser in Florida at which Rubio was the keynote speaker. In his speech, Rubio spoke of his humble beginnings.

“He said, ‘I want you to pay attention to all the bartenders that have served you what you wanted. I want you to pay attention to all the ladies that have served you at the table. Those are my parents,’” Roberts recalled. “As he kept going with it, it became very emotional and personal.”

Roberts referred to recent Republican debates as “weekly cage fights” and said Rubio presents a message opposite that of bombastic businessman Donald Trump.

“He knows also that one president can’t do it all. That’s just the antithesis of what Mr. Trump says,” Roberts said. “You can’t be in charge of everything if you’re the president of the United States but you can inspire people and you can get good people around you and that’s what Marco, I know, will do.”

Roberts said he is willing to campaign for Rubio if the candidate asks him to but stressed he is focusing his energy on the Senate Agriculture Committee, which he chairs.

“If he would like for me to campaign for him in farm country, I think it would be the best thing I could do for him,” Roberts said.

Rubio also has the support of two other prominent Kansas Republicans — Gov. Sam Brownback and U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo. Brownback made the endorsement Monday. Pompeo announced his support Nov. 6.

“I think he represents the best opportunity for Republicans to win in November, which is just absolutely crucial if we’re going to turn the country back to our more traditional and constitutional principles,” Roberts said. “I think he can do that.”
