Area Retirees to Protest House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan Appearance

Philadelphia, PA--- Pennsylvania Alliance for Retired Americans members will be protesting when the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia hosts House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI) for a talk and book-signing on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at 6:00 PM at the Union League of Philadelphia.

The Paul Ryan budget would end Medicare as we know it by turning it into a voucher program and raising the Medicare eligibility age to 67. It would also gut Medicaid while at the same time providing a windfall for millionaires.

As Paul Ryan joins Mitt Romney for a reunion and stroll down memory lane and double down on the failed GOP policies that voters sounded rejected in the last election, DNC Press Secretary Michael Czin released the following statement:

“Today, Ryan is trying to recycle the same failed policies that he campaigned – and lost on.  In 2012, Americans rejected the Romney-Ryan plan that ended Medicare as we know it, shifted the tax burden onto American families or gut programs for the most vulnerable members of society.

“The Romney-Ryan ticket also opposed the auto rescue that saved over a million jobs across the country. Romney derided 47% of Americans saying they ‘who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them,’ while Ryan claimed that a majority of Americans were ‘takers.’

“So as Ryan and Romney take a trip down memory lane, it serves to highlight the important choice voters have this November: the failed Republican policies of the past or the Democrat’s forward-thinking policies that create jobs and strengthen the middle class.”

DNC Seniors Coordinating Council Chair Statement on Paul Ryan’s Visit to Florida

ATLANTA, Ga. – Today, former Republican Vice Presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) will visit three cities in the Florida panhandle as part of his tour to promote his new book, The Way Forward. Ahead of his visit, Steve Regenstreif, the chair of the Democratic National Committee’s Seniors Coordinating Council, released the following statement:

“Paul Ryan may call his book The Way Forward, but what it details is nothing more than a step-by-step formula for how to move our country backward. Ryan may claim he’s fighting for the poor and seniors, but even in his new book he’s pushing the same radical ideas that would gut the social safety net and weaken access to health care – all while providing more benefits for the wealthy and big corporations. Voters haven’t forgotten that. His new book tour is a national showcase of recycling the same failed ideas that Americans rejected when Paul Ryan was the GOP’s vice presidential nominee in 2012. If Paul Ryan got his way, both Medicare and Social Security would be on a fast track toward privatization – leaving the health and economic security of seniors to the whims of insurance companies and Wall Street. Floridians know better than to buy Ryan’s new rhetoric because the same old failed GOP record is hiding behind it. Seniors in Florida and across the country want leaders committed to them, not ideologues who believe the only way to save the safety net and boost the middle class is to gut the very programs that support them.”

Dreamers Confront Rep. Paul Ryan in Florida, Ask Why His “Way Forward” Doesn’t Include the Undocumented Community

KISSIMMEE, FL – This afternoon United We Dream leaders confronted Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) during a book signing as the Wisconsin representative was promoting his new book, “The Way Forward.”

The Republican Party has continually shown a lack of leadership on immigration, letting reform languish in the House for more than a year, and the undocumented community will not soon forget the GOP’s move towards an ideology of family separation.

Maria Palacios, a DACAmented leader with United We Dream-Tampa Bay, a UWD affiliate, confronted Rep. Ryan issued the following statement,

“That Rep. Ryan would have the audacity to title his book “The Way Forward” is laughable. During the last year, the Republican Party has only taken steps back, has refused to move on immigration reform, and has sided with right-wing, anti-immigrant Members of Congress like Rep. Steve King and Sen. Ted Cruz, whose only solution to our community’s moral crisis is maximum deportations.”

“That’s why today we confronted Rep. Ryan and demanded he sign a copy of his book with a note asking why he feels my family and I should be deported. Just last month, Rep. Ryan voted on a bill that would rid me, and more than half a million Dreamers of DACA, and prevent people like my parents from obtaining any type of relief.”

“Republicans have become DACA-bullies and have become the party of “get-the-hell-out.” We’ve descended on the offices of Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Marco Rubio, and Rep. Cory Gardner to remind them that Dreamers remain committed to defending DACA, a program that has provided me protection from deportation, and hundreds of thousands a chance to work.”

“Rep. Paul Ryan does not stand with the immigrant community, and he’s just the latest Republican Member of Congress to be reminded that Dreamers do not forget.”

DNC Seniors Coordinating Council Chair Statement on Paul Ryan’s Visit to Texas

WASHINGTON – Today, former Republican Vice Presidential nominee Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) is visiting three cities in North Texas as part of his tour to promote his new book, The Way Forward. Ahead of his visit, Steve Regenstreif, the chair of the Democratic National Committee’s Seniors Coordinating Council, released the following statement:

“Paul Ryan’s book tour is nothing more than recycled failed ideas that Americans rejected when Paul Ryan was the GOP’s vice presidential nominee in 2012. If Paul Ryan got his way, both Medicare and Social Security would be on a fast track toward privatization – leaving the health and economic security of seniors up to the insurance companies and Wall Street. Texas seniors – and seniors across the country – want leaders committed to them, not ideologues who believe the only way to save the safety net and boost the middle class is to gut the very programs that support them.”
