March 15, 2013 - At CPAC.

- Speech at 2013 Conservative Political Action Conference at the Gaylord National in National Harbor, MD, March 15, 2013.

- Accepting the nomination as the Republican candidate for vice president  in Tampa, FL, Aug 29, 2012.
(prepared remarks).
- Announcement as vice presidential pick at the Nauticus Museum in Norfolk, VA, Aug. 11, 2012.
- Republican response to the State of the Union Address, Jan. 25, 2011.

2016 - As a contested convention appeared more likely, there were suggestions and talk that such a situation could result in the nomination of House Speaker Paul Ryan as president.  Ryan had ruled out a run on Jan. 12, 2015, but the speculation grew to the point that he made another statement on April 12, declaring, "Let me be clear: I do not want, nor will I accept the Republican nomination (+)."

2015
- With the advent of the 114th Congress, Rep. Ryan took over his dream job as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.  Less than a week later, on Jan. 12, Ryan issued a statement ruling out a run in 2016 because his "job as Chairman deserves undivided attention (+)."

On Sept. 25, 2015, House Speaker John Boehner announced he would resign at the end of October.  Paul Ryan did not want the job, but after a month of casting about, House Republicans on Oct. 29 elected Ryan as Speaker of the House.

2014 -
Rep. Ryan's book, The Way Forward, came out on Aug. 19 and he did a modest tour (+).

2013
- On Dec. 10, 2013, Rep. Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, and Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), chairman of the Senate Budget Committee, announced they had reached a two-year budget agreement which would "avoid government shutdown in January, provide certainty to businesses and families, and return budget process to regular order." (>)  Although some conservatives found fault with the compromise, it passed both houses of Congress.  Ryan does lead all potential 2016 candidates in Facebook likes at 4.9 million, in large measure the result of his time as vice presidential nominee.  However, he is seen as more interested in seeking the chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee when that opens up in 2015, than in making a run for the presidency.  He confirmed his interest in the Ways and Means position in a Dec. 17 interview with the Wall Street Journal.  Ryan is just 43 years old; if 2016 doesn't beckon, he could seek the White House in a future cycle.

Readings

Paul Ryan.  Aug. 19, 2014.  THE WAY FORWARD: Restoring the American Idea.  New York: Twelve (Grand Central Publishing imprint/Hachette Book Group).
"Beginning with a careful analysis of the 2012 election--including a look at the challenge the GOP had in reaching a majority of voters and the prevalence of identity politics--Ryan examines the state of the Republican party and dissects its challenges going forward.  THE WAY FORWARD also offers a detailed critique of not only President Obama but of the progressive movement as a whole--its genesis, its underlying beliefs and philosophies, and how its policies are steering the country to certain ruin.  Culminating in a plan for the future, THE WAY FORWARD argues that the Republican Party is and must remain a conservative party, emphasizing conservatism in a way that demonstrates how it can modernize and appeal to both our deepest concerns and highest ideals."
