OVERVIEW
The voter guide notes,

"You may be unfamiliar with our Presidential Primary, since we have not had one for eight years. The primary was created in 1989 as a citizens’ Initiative to the Legislature. The Presidential Primary is the only Washington State election in which you are required to select a political party."

Although the Democratic candidates were also on the May 24 ballot, the outcome of their primary had no effect on their selection of delegates; Democrats used a caucus system which started with legislative district caucuses on April 17 and led to a state convention on June 19.
