TEXT Are You A Republican?  Dr. Ben Carson

Dr. Ben Carson, M.D.: I am actually an independent.  Ah, there was a time when I was a pretty left-wing Democrat, and there was a time when I was a Republican, but I actually find being an independent works very well for me.  I do tend to be more conservative, ah, because I tend to belong to what I call the logical party or the commonsense party and conservatism tends to lean more towards commonsense than progressivism does.  For instance conservatism says you don't spend what you don't have; progressivism says it doesn't matter just keep spending because somehow that'll make things better.  Well, you know, to me that doesn't make sense, and I've never found anybody who can explain how it makes sense in a way that sounds reasonable.  But you know I actually would favor a voting system in which there were no political designations on the ballot, where you actually had to know what the person believed, you had to know how they voted in the past rather than just going and looking for a D or an R or a name that looks familiar.  That's one of the reasons that we're in so much trouble now.  People don't invest the appropriate amount of time in studying the people who represent them.  So we need to become much more responsible voters if we intend to have a country where they actually represent our views.
