Notes:
1. In an Aug. 15 post headlined "EXHAUSTED HILLARY Is Taking Off Weekends -- And Media Is Covering It Up," the right-leaning Gateway Pundit blog (Jim Hoft) posited  "It is unknown why Clinton is taking so much time off.  Questions arise whether it is related to her terrible campaign event turnout or her poor health or some combination of both (>)."

Hoft's conclusion fit an ongoing narrative among some on the right about Clinton's health.  Trump and his allies have sought to raise questions about Clinton's health for some time; the Clinton campaign forcefully rejected such insinuations (+) and in an Aug. 22 appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" Clinton even opened a pickle jar as an indicator of her health.

In August Clinton was not out on the stump as much as Trump, given her position in the polls, maybe she did not need to be.  In the latter half of the month she did a flurry of fundraisers.  News reports suggested she was focusing on fundraisers now because there will be less time for them in the remaining months.  Clinton is likely pacing herself for the marathon that is the general election campaign.  August is also a vacation month, and Clinton could just be taking her vacation in dribs and drabs and focusing on the fundraising.

Keep in mind here is more than one way to do a campaign; large rallies such as Trump favors, show a degree of support, but are not the be all and end all of campaligning.  When Ralph Nader ran for president he held well attended "super rallies," but that didn't win him the presidency.  Clinton likely favors smaller events which may allow for a bit more control, but recall in July she did address large groups at meetings of national organizations.  Behind the scenes she could be doing a lot of non-public campaigning, private meetings, and such which could be as effective as or more effective than holding large rallies in terms of winning over voters.

Hoft's basic point about Clinton's public schedule being light to date appears accurate (compare Obama Aug.2008  |  Kerry Aug. 2004), but really a larger sample is needed, as through the end of August or September to draw any conclusions.

Clinton is also continuing to take criticism for tight control of media appearances.  On Aug. 12 Politico chief political correspondent Glenn Thrush tweeted that Hillary Clinton "is the least accessible presidential nominee in modern times."  On Aug. 14, Tampa Bay Times political editor Adam C. Smith awarded her "loser of the week in Florida politics," writing, "The Democratic nominee has yet to sit with a Florida broadcast  journalist."

2. Politico's Gabriel Debenedetti reported on Aug 8, "In August alone, the three campaign principals will headline over 80 finance events in more than 25 states, according to a schedule of the private events distributed to donors and obtained by POLITICO. The candidate herself will hit over 35, while Kaine will make it to more than 30 and the former president will headline somewhere around 20.  CBS News Hannah Chanpong tweeted on Sept. 1, "Clinton personally headlined 37 fundraisers in NE, CO, FL, MI, IL, PA, CT, OH, MA, CA, NY & DC in August."  On Sept. 1 the campaign announced it had its "best fundraising month of the campaign in August, bringing in about $143 million for Hillary for America (HFA)  and the Democratic Party. HFA, along with the Hillary Victory Fund (HVF) and Hillary Action Fund (HAF) began September with a combined $152 million in the bank."
