Benjamin Solomon "Ben" Carson Sr. is an author, columnist and retired neurosurgeon.

Dr. Carson was born September 18, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan. His parents were both from rural Georgia. When he was 8 years old, his parents divorced and he and his older brother, Curtis, were raised by their mother. Despite growing up in one of the worst areas of Detroit, Ben Carson went on to become a world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon.

He became the youngest major division chairman in the history of Johns Hopkins University Hospital, leading that multi-hundred million dollar enterprise to new levels of innovation and success.

He is credited with being the first surgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins joined at the head. In 2008 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush.

After delivering a widely publicized speech at the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast, he was launched into the national spotlight for his candor about political correctness and common sense approaches for fixing some of the problems our country is facing.

Most importantly, Ben Carson has never lost touch with where he started. He and his wife, Candy, started the Carson Scholars Fund to help hard working students escape poverty and succeed in life. The Fund now operates in all fifty states, helping thousands of students realize their dreams.

The National Draft Ben Carson for President Committee, chaired by John Philp Sousa IV, has been working since August of 2013 to draft Dr. Ben Carson to run for President of the United States.

On May 4, 2015, Ben Carson announced he was running. Believe me when I tell you that drafting Ben Carson was no small feat. Our national effort to draft him was the first successful draft effort since Barry Goldwater in 1964!

After Dr. Carson announced, the National Draft Ben Carson for President Committee transitioned into The 2016 Committee and is now working to provide the margin of victory to Ben Carson in both the nomination and the 2016 Presidential Election. Our Committee is a super PAC and not affiliated with Ben Carson's official campaign in any way.

The truth is that while this Committee, with the help of hundreds of thousands of Americans across the nation, played a very important role in persuading Ben Carson to run for president, it will play an even more important role in helping him win.

We have been at work in Iowa for almost two years developing our strategy and organizing the state. In addition, we have full time staff and offices open in Iowa, New Hampshire and North Carolina with the other three early primary states, South Carolina, Colorado and Nevada soon to follow.

Furthermore, we have assembled an experienced, passionate and dedicated political team that is working with more than 28,000 volunteers across the nation to build an unstoppable grassroots organization in every state.

But the truth is Ben Carson cannot win unless we expand the base, which is why we are reaching out to as many Americans as possible to introduce them to Dr. Carson.
