Books from the Campaign Period

Each cycle (see below), a new crop of political tomes by potential presidential candidates  and cancidates hits the bookstores.  These include straight biographies, expositions on the issues of the day, and most typically books which blend the two.  Many or most of these books are not great reads, but every so often one will strike a chord, as did Sen. John McCain's Faith of My Fathers, written with Mark Salter (1999).

Writing, or as is most often the case, co-writing a book allows a political figure to present himself or herself as a thoughtful person, and maybe even make a few bucks along the way.  Sen. Ted Cruz, for example, was  reporrted to be receiving an advance of close to $1.5 million for the book he wrote.  Once the book is done, there is the opportunity to do book tour, during which the presidential prospect can connect with potential supporters.  Even if a potential candidate does not have a new book in the works, an upcoming campaign may be a good time to reissue a book he or she has previously written.  A book is a perhaps the ultimate form of campaign literature, a tri-fold brochure or palm card taken to two hundred, three hundred, or more pages.1  In the digital age, however, some candidates opt for the e-book over the printed page as did Sen. Lindsey Graham and former Gov. Jeb Bush.

In addition to books by the candidates themselves, books written by journalists and others also offer insights on the leading candidates and the campaign.  For example, books on Trump included Never Enough (St. Martin's Press, Oct. 2015) by Michael D'Antonio, The Making of Donald Trump (Melville House, Aug. 2016) by David Cay Johnston, Trump Revealed (Simon & Schuster, Aug. 2016) by Michael Kranish and Marc Fisher, and a graphic novel by Ted Rall (Seven Stories Press, July 2016).  A broader look at the campaign came in The Year of Voting Dangerously (Grand Central Publishing, Sept. 2016), a collection by the New York Times' Maureen Dowd.

There is a large, ever-growing oeuvre of anti-Clinton books.2 For example, Clinton allies issued detailed rebuttals to Peter Schweizer's Clinton Cash (Harper, May 2015) (1; 2. 3 [PDF]), and errors in the book prompted the publisher to make "significant revisions," yet the book served as a mainstay of Donald Trump's June 22, 2016 speech on the stakes of the election and was made into a movie.  Gary J. Byrne, Dinesh D'Souza and Ed Klein (two books) also contributed to the genre; many of these books are published by Regnery Publishing.

Notes

1. There are limits to what politicians can do to promote and distribute their books.  In 2013 Rep. Michele Bachmann came under investigation for charges that she "used funds from her presidential campaign to promote her book, and may have used book promotional activities paid for by the publisher to promote her presidential campaign."  See also Federal Election Commission AO 2014-06, iissued July 23, 2014, in which the FEC issued an opinion on the propriety of Rep. Paul Ryan's campaign committee and leadership PAC promoting and distributing copies of his book The Way Forward.

Also note that before the campaign gets underway, there are figures who are subject of intense presidential speculation but who ultimately do not run; presidential buzz can substantially help boost their book sales.  Examples from this cycle include Elizabeth Warren, Andrew Cuomo and Paul Ryan.

2. There are already numerous books about Hillary Clinton from the time of her previous campaign, including works which fit into the "hatchet job" category.

Brett M. Decker, Ed Martin and Phyllis Schlafly.  THE CONSERVATIVE CASE FOR TRUMP.  Washington, DC: Regnery Publishing.
"Schlafly, the conservative icon whose celebrated classic A Choice Not An Echo (over 3 million copies sold) upended the 1964 Republican Convention, persuasively argues that Donald Trump is worthy of every conservative’s vote. Joined by Ed Martin, the former head of the Missouri Republican Party, and Brett Decker, formerly an editorial writer with the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Times, Schlafly presents the real Trump, the Trump she and her colleagues have met with and interviewed, the Trump who is far more conservative than you think."

Ann Coulter.  Aug. 23, 2016.  IN TRUMP WE TRUST: E Pluribus Awesome!  New York: Sentinel [Penguin Random House imprint].
"Donald Trump isn’t a politician — he’s a one-man wrecking ball against our dysfunctional and corrupt establishment. We’re about to see the deluxe version of the left’s favorite theme: Vote for us or we’ll call you stupid. It’s the working class against the smirking class...  Now Ann Coulter, with her unique insight, candor, and sense of humor, makes the definitive case for why we should all join his revolution."

Ted Rall.  July 19, 2016.  TRUMP: A Graphic Biography.  New York: Seven Stories Press.

"Trump's life story is told, going all the way back to his origins growing up a rich kid in the NY suburbs. Rall shows how Trump taps into a longing among many Americans for a strongman. He doesn't make many promises; his supporters don't expect many. He'll Make America Great Again. Somehow. Trust me, he says. And they do."

G.B. Trudeau.  YUGE!  30 Years of Doonesbury on Trump.  Riverside, NJ: Andrews McMeel Publishing.
"He tried to warn us. Ever since the release of the first Trump-for-President trial balloon in 1987, Doonesbury’s Garry Trudeau has tirelessly tracked and highlighted the unsavory career of the most unqualified candidate to ever aspire to the White House. It’s all there--the hilarious narcissism, the schoolyard bullying, the loathsome misogyny, the breathtaking ignorance; and a good portion of the Doonesbury cast has been tangled up in it."

She shows us what it was like when they moved to Baltimore to join a new community centered around Johns Hopkins Hospital. She describes how their family evolved with the births of their three sons and the tragic miscarriage of their twins. She talks about the challenges of Ben’s twelve to twenty-hour work days, as he saved thousands of lives, year after year, while Candy ran the household.

Ben Carson, M.D. with Candy Carson.  Oct. 6, 2015.  A MORE PERFECT UNION: What We the People Can Do to Reclaim Our Constitutional LibertiesSentinel HC [Penguin Books].
"I wrote this book to encourage every citizen to read and think about the Constitution, and to help defend it from those who misinterpret and undermine it. In our age of political correctness it’s especially important to defend the Bill of Rights, which guarantees our freedom to speak, bear arms, practice our religion, and much more."

Ben Carson, M.D. with Candy Carson.  May 20, 2014.  ONE NATION: What We Can All Do to Save America.  New York: Sentinel HC [Penguin Books].
"As a doctor rather than a politician, I care about what works, not whether someone has an (R) or a (D) after his or her name. We have to come together to solve our problems...  Knowing that the future of my grandchildren is in jeopardy because of reckless spending, godless government, and mean-spirited attempts to silence critics left me no choice but to write this book. I have endeavored to propose a road out of our decline, appealing to every American’s decency and common sense."

Matt Katz.  Jan. 19, 2016.  AMERICAN GOVERNOR: Chris Christie's Bridge to Redemption.  New York: Threshold Editions [Simon & Schuster].

In American Governor, Katz weaves a compelling on-the-ground political narrative that begins with Christie’s landslide election victory over opponent Jon Corzine and follows him along the road to his announcement of his intention to run for the highest office in the country.

Ted Cruz.  June 30, 2015.  A TIME FOR TRUTH: Reigniting the Miracle of America. New York: Broadside Books [HarperCollins].
"In A Time For Truth, his first book, Cruz tells his story as a Cuban immigrant’s son who made it to the Ivy League, to the Supreme Court bar, and eventually the U.S. Senate...  Pulling back the curtain on the backroom deals between Republicans, Democrats, and the lobbyists who keep them in office (instead of keeping them accountable to their constituents), Cruz offers an inside look at what has gone wrong in our nation’s capital. He argues that the need for change is urgent, and that the only way to bring about real change is to revitalize the Constitutional principles that made our country great."
Ed. note: Paul Bedard, writing for the Washington Examiner, reported on April 2, 2014 that Cruz was to receive an advance of close to $1.5 million for the book.

Carly Fiorina.  May 2015.  RISING TO THE CHALLENGE, MY LEADERSHIP JOURNEY.  New York: Sentinel [Penguin Books USA].
"Since the 2006 publication of her New York Times bestseller Tough Choices, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina has faced a new round of challenges. She ran for the Senate as a Republican in deep-blue California; battled breast cancer; suffered the loss of a step-daughter; and launched the Unlocking Potential Project, a new grassroots organization.  Now she has a message for those who worry about America’s future: Our wounds are self-inflicted. We have all the resources we need to prosper, but we don’t tap into them. By ignoring conservative principles—or failing to articulate those principles in ways that connect with regular people—Republicans have missed many opportunities to lead.  Fiorina believes that politics, like business, is primarily about people. She shows how conservatives can reach out across the usual barriers of gender, race, income, and party affiliation to craft a message that appeals to a wide range of Americans. Her book will be an important blueprint for conservatives as we approach the critical elections of 2016."  Initial working title was: Times of Challenge, Moments of Grace.

"In Mike Huckabee’s new book God, Guns, Grits and Gravy, he asks the question, 'Have I been taken to a different planet than the one on which I grew up?' The New York Times bestselling author explores today’s American culture, drawing from his travels as a presidential candidate to present average, small-town people and families, and their optimistic resilience in the face of hard times; their stories, says Huckabee, 'will inspire readers to think about their own values and rediscover what makes America great.' At times lighthearted, at others bracingly realistic, Huckabee's brand of optimistic patriotism lends itself to discussing the reintroduction of fundamental American values, as well as a bright outlook for future generations."

Stories such as the stalwart senator who galvanized the public against Hillary Clinton’s costly and oppressive socialist health-care proposal in the early 1990s; the entrepreneur whose dogged determination ushered in a worldwide energy revolution, and with it technological innovation and economic growth; and the Founding Father who refused to “lead from behind” and instead used his vision for the nascent nation’s vast potential and the best interests of its people to outwit a greedy dictator."

Rick Santorum.  April 28, 2014.  BLUE COLLAR CONSERVATIVES.  Washington, DC: Regnery Publishing.
"In 2012, a mass of blue collar voters, enough to have tipped the balance of the electoral college in favor of the Republican candidate, simply stayed home on election day. Why? Despite their deeply conservative values, they had lost faith that the Republicans spoke for them and had their backs. In Blue Collar Conservatives, Rick Santorum calls for the GOP to get back in touch with this base." tour

Ed Klein.  Oct. 4, 2016.  GUILTY AS SIN.  Washington, DC:  Regnery Publishing.
"In his astonishing new book, Klein uncovers the real story behind Hillary’s email scandals and the dirty political games that have kept her one step ahead of the law – for now. Klein reveals what the FBI’s team of 150+ investigators really found on Clinton’s server. How Comey originally threatened to resign over White House attempts to intervene in the investigation, and his secret plan to go around the Justice Department if needed. How an unprecedented Congressional investigation during an election year is uncovering new shocking evidence of corruption on a level some would call treason. And what Bill and Hillary still have left in their bag of tricks in their desperate quest to get back into the Oval Office."

Dinesh D'Souza.  July 2016.  HILLARY'S AMERICA: The Secret History of the Democratic Party.  Washington, DC: Regnery Publishing.
"Dinesh D’Souza, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller America, is back with this darkly entertaining deconstruction of Hillary Clinton’s flawed character and ideology. From her Alinskyite past to her hopes for America’s progressive future, the presumptive Democratic nominee is revealed to be little more than a political gangster intent on controlling the nation’s wealth. D’Souza chronicles the sleazy ascent of the Clintons and makes clear what some voters have long suspected: that Hillary is far more dangerous and corrupt than Bill ever was."
>The book served as the basis for a movie of the same title released nationally on July 22nd by Quality Flix and D’Souza Media.

Liza Featherstone, ed.  May 17, 2016.  FALSE CHOICES: The Faux Feminism of Hillary Rodham Clinton.  New York: Verso [Penguin Random House]
"In the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, the mantle of feminist elect has descended on Hillary Clinton, as a thousand viral memes applaud her, and most mainstream feminist leaders, thinkers, and organizations endorse her...  In False Choices, an all-star lineup of feminists contests this simplistic reading of the candidate. A detailed look at Hillary Clinton’s track record on welfare, Wall Street, criminal justice, education, and war reveals that she has advanced laws and policies that have done real harm to the lives of women and children across the country and the globe. This well-researched collection of essays restores to feminism its revolutionary meaning, and outlines how it could transform the United States and its relation to the world."

A carefully-edited anthology of The Nation's coverage of Clinton's career, it's a rigorous and painstaking study of one of our most enigmatic public figures. It is a history of our time, and a must-read for the 2016 election season, providing perspective on the woman who could become the first female President of the United States.

Klein, the former editor in chief of New York Times Magazine and a contributing editor to Vanity Fair, draws a deeply troubling portrait of Hillary Rodham Clinton, a highly unlikeable presidential candidate and a woman more associated with scandal than with accomplishments, with lying than with truth, with arrogance than with compassion."

James Webb.  May 20, 2014.  I HEARD MY COUNTRY CALLING: A Memoir.  New York: Simon & Schuster.
"James Webb...has written an extraordinary memoir of his early years, 'a love story—love of family, love of country, love of service,' in his words.  Webb’s mother grew up in the poverty-stricken cotton fields of Eastern Arkansas. His father and life-time hero was the first of many generations of Webbs, whose roots are in Appalachia, to finish high school. He flew bombers in World War II, cargo planes in the Berlin Airlift, graduated from college in middle age, and became an expert in the nation’s most advanced weaponry.  Webb’s account of his childhood is a tremendous American saga as the family endures the constant moves and challenges of the rarely examined Post-World War II military...  His account of his four years at Annapolis are painfully honest but in the end triumphant. His description of Vietnam’s most brutal battlefields breaks new literary ground."

"Presidential candidates are a breed apart, often propelled by traits that have shaped their careers and have deep roots in personal histories. Often their greatest strength can turn at supernova speed into their greatest weakness. The exact qualities that set them apart from the field trip them up eventually over the long haul of a presidential campaign.  In this series of eBooks, The Washington Post is exploring in-depth all these key characteristics of the leading presidential contenders, the very characteristics that could help make one of them the country’s next commander in chief—or forever sink their presidential ambitions."
Thus far there are books on nine of the candidates, each about 45 pages ($2.99 each): Jeb Bush (Sally Jenkins)  -  Chris Christie (Manuel Roig-Franzia)  -  Hillary Clinton (Kent Babb)  -  Ted Cruz (Marc Fisher)  -  Mike Huckabee (Steve Hendrix)  -  Rand Paul (Joel Achenbach)  -  Rick Perry (Stephanie McCrummen)  -  Marco Rubio (Mary Jordan)  -  Scott Walker (Michael A. Fletcher).
