Protests in DC Around the 58th Presidential Inauguration

After such a contentious election it was inevitable that there would be protests.  There were a few elements seeking to cause trouble, and on Jan. 20 protesters smashed windows of several businesses in downtown DC, leading to mass arrests (+).  However, most of the demonstrations were peaceful.  Among the notable protests:

  • Starting things off on Jan. 14, 2017, Rev. Al Sharpton's National Action Network spearheaded a "We Shall Not be Moved" March to "demand accountability not just from President-elect Trump but from Senate and Congress members."
  • ANSWER Coalition planned a protest at Freedom Plaza on the morning of Jan. 20. 2017.
  • Occupy Inauguration called for "unity to stand against the oligarch and demand representation for the people."
  • Refuse Fascism called for "a month of resistance beginning on December 19th, reaching a crescendo by the January 20th 2017 Inauguration."
  • Disrupt J20 planned "a series of massive direct actions that will shut down the Inauguration ceremonies and any related celebrations–the Inaugural parade, the Inaugural balls, you name it."
  • Ungovernable 2017 called on people in cities around the country to "self-organize a day of action...If possible don’t ask for permits assert your right to free speech and assembly, let it be a day of mass demonstrations, civil disobedience, and direct action and strikes."
  • At least 67 Democratic members of Congress boycotted Donald Trump's Inauguration.  See list at The Washington Post.
  • The Women's March on Washington on Jan. 21, 2017 was by far the biggest of the protests.  Organizers sought to "join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore," sending the message that "women's rights are human rights."  For Washington, DC, WMATA reported, "Jan. 21, 2017, was the second-busiest day in Metro history with 1,001,613 trips."  According to a chart of crowd estimates coordinated by University of Connecticut associate professor of political scientist Jeremy Pressman, between 470,000 and 680,000 people participated in the march in DC.  Companion rallies were held in cities across the U.S. and around the world; Pressman estimated attendance worldwide was at least 3.3 million (>).

NATIONAL ACTION NETWORK (NAN), CIVIL RIGHTS GROUPS, CLERGY & ACTIVISTS REVEAL ROUTE FOR MARCH & RALLY IN WASHINGTON D.C. ON SAT., JAN. 14 TO KICK OFF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WEEKEND

In the days leading up to the inauguration of Donald J. Trump, a coalition of civil rights groups, activists, unions and clergy will rally outside the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C. to warn President Trump and Congress that the fight for criminal justice, voting rights, affordable health care, improvements in education and other issues around equality and justice continues.

National Action Network (NAN), led by civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton, has announced the route for a rally and march on MLK weekend, just six days before the presidential inauguration, that will attract Americans from every state, race, religion and ethnicity. The 2017 march on Washington, evoking the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., will start at the National Sylvan Theater and lead to West Potomac Park via Independence Ave. SW and end with a rally across from the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.

Participants will demand accountability not just from President-elect Trump but from Senate and Congress members who are charged with overseeing the Criminal Justice Reform Act, the Voting Rights Bill, Supreme Court nominations and other Trump political appointments. Our movement, #WeShallNotBeMoved, will send a clear message to those in power that the fight for equal rights and justice for all continues.

The four top concerns are: that police reform will continue and there won’t be mass incarceration for low-level, nonviolent crimes, that stop and frisk will not become a national policy, that the Affordable Care Act won’t be rolled back and that climate change will be effectively addressed.

“The 2017 march will bring all people together to insist on change and accountability,” said Rev. Sharpton. “Martin Luther King Jr.’s struggle for civil rights didn’t end with his death, it’s a fight we take on each day. The political players may change but our goals stay the same. Donald Trump and his administration need to hear our voice and our concerns.”

WHEN: Sat., Jan. 14

ROUTE: Assemble at 9 a.m. at the National Sylvan Theater, Independence Avenue Southwest & 15th St. N.W.

March begins at 11 a.m. and will travel along Independence Ave. SW to West Potomac Park at 1964 Independence Ave. SW

Rally at 12 p.m. in West Potomac Park, directly across from Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial

About National Action Network

Protest Against Trump on Inauguration Day: Fight Racism, Defend Immigrants!

January 20, 2017 at 7am
Freedom Plaza
1355 Pennsylvania Ave NW
(14th St and Pennsylvania Ave)
Washington, DC 20004
United States

Progressive people from all over the country will be descending on Washington, D.C. on January 20, 2017 to stage a massive demonstration along Pennsylvania Avenue on Inauguration Day.

It is critically important that we keep building a larger grassroots movement against war, militarism, racism, anti-immigrant scapegoating and neoliberal capitalism’s assault against workers’ living standards and the environment.

Real social change comes from the bottom, the mobilized grassroots, and not from the centers of institutional power, the professional politicians or the capitalist elites.

This country needs a real political revolution. Millions of people feel entirely disenfranchised by a political system that delivered the least favorable and trusted candidates in U.S. history. Many hoped that the Bernie Sanders campaign would represent a new direction and opportunity to take on entrenched power and extreme inequality, for a higher minimum wage, to defend Social Security, rebuild the labor movement, provide universal health care and free tuition.

That campaign was largely suppressed, but its end does not change the desires and aspirations of tens of millions of people, workers and youth in particular, who are demanding real change. On Inauguration Day, thousands will be in the streets to give voice to the millions of people in this country who are demanding systemic change.

Donald Trump is a racist, sexist bigot. We believe that tens of thousands of progressive people will be in the streets on Inauguration Day and in the weeks and months afterward.

How one voted on election day is one thing, but even more important is whether we succeed in building a mass movement that can truly change the country, and the world.

Waiting for the same politicians who led to the rise of Trump to now stop him is a lost cause.

Join us on January 20, 2017 for a massive mobilization of the people — RSVP at the form at the bottom of this page.

This action has been initiated by the ANSWER Coalition.

Occupy Inauguration

Our Demands

#OccupyInauguration #SeeYouInDC #ShutItDown

Occupy Inauguration is a mass rally and protest taking place in Washington D.C. on Inauguration Day, January 20th-21st, 2017.

From day one of the new administration, our movements will need to unite and fight to advance the revolution.

We reject the domination of Wall Street and the billionaire class over our society, and oppose this rigged political and economic system. We stand against both the danger Trump represents and the corruption that backed Clinton. Neither party represents the interests of the 99%.

The goal of this action is to build a new independent coalition movement for the 99% that stands outside the stranglehold duopoly of the GOP and DNC. We recognize the establishments of the Republican and Democratic parties to be part of the problem, so we will not be inviting leadership from, or endorsement by them. We believe the 99% needs its own political representation that rejects all corporate cash and influence, and puts people and planet over profits.

We call upon the new president to act on these demands:

  • NO Mass Deportations! We reject Trump’s current plan to deport 3 million people and call for mass resistance against all attacks upon immigrants, refugees, and their families at local, state, and federal levels.

  • Stop ALL Attacks on Human Rights! Bring an end to all forms of discrimination and oppression against women, Black and indigenous communities of color, Latinx communities, immigrants, Muslims, LGBTQ+ people, and disabled individuals.

  • Black Lives Matter! Engage in solidarity with the Movement for Black Lives to end institutional racism and police brutality. Acknowledge the value of BLM’s principles to guide law enforcement practices and affirm the demands of their platform.  End federal funding for police militarization and the racist war on drugs.

  • Honor Treaty Rights for ALL Indigenous First Nations. Cease construction on the DAPL pipeline at Standing Rock and prohibit any further industrial operations on treaty-protected indigenous lands!

  • Get Money Out of Politics and End Corporate Rule! We demand a constitutional amendment be passed to abolish ALL "corporate constitutional rights" and "money equals free speech" that leaves for NO loopholes.

  • Healthcare is a Human Right! We demand Medicare for All and to pass the Disability Integration Act.

  • A Green New Deal, with massive investments in renewable energy and infrastructure to create tens of thousands of good-paying jobs.

  • ACT Against Climate Change! Halt all construction of new oil pipelines and coal terminals, and place a moratorium on fossil fuel extraction including fracking. We demand a just transition for all energy industry workers.

  • Free College Education and the Cancellation of Student Debt.

  • Electoral Reform and Integrity! We call for a universal Right to Vote, a Ranked-Voting System, and automatic voter registration. End the Electoral College and partisan gerrymandering of voting districts.

  • End Too Big to Fail! Break up the big banks at the heart of the 2008 financial crisis and stop manipulation of wealth before the next economic collapse.

  • NO Permanent War! We call for an immediate end to the bombing of foreign nations, military bases occupying foreign soil, massive U.S. military spending, and the U.S. role as leading arms dealer to the world.

  • End the surveillance state!

  • Grant immediate pardons for all political prisoners and exiles including Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden, Mumia Abu-Jahmal, and Leonard Peltier.

  • Pass a federal $15/hour minimum wage.

  • Scrap the Trans-Pacific Partnership! Should the TPP come to a vote, Congress should immediately vote it down.

Until these demands are genuinely addressed, we remove our consent to be governed.

Our first act will be a national bank exit call-to-action on January 20th. We call the American people to remove their money from Bank of America, JP MorganChase, Citi, Wells Fargo and all their affiliates.

Should our demands continue to be ignored we will proceed with further boycotts, labor strikes, and occupations.

We know that mass movements are how real change is won, and we are organizing in solidarity with the inspiring resistance at Standing Rock, and all Black Lives Matter actions. We feel that the voices of Black and Indigenous People of Color are crucial to issues of oppression we wish to address in D.C. during the Inauguration.

We invite you to involve and express yourself at whatever level you choose. We do not represent any particular party or group, as our focus is on movement building. This action is aimed to confront Wall Street directly and the RNC/DNC's influence over our political system. We support, represent, and welcome a diversity of voices and concerns.

We stand in solidarity with our current endorsers and welcome other groups who share this vision to organize with us.

Occupy Inauguration Statement of Values

1.  Power to the People: It is with the consent and will of the people from which governments derive their authority and leaders are empowered.  People-led organizations and institutions rooted in the principles of democracy and justice are the source from which powerful movements for social/political/economic change arise. Solutions are found from the experiences and struggles of the people on the frontlines of the severe crises facing our nation. The power to change our country and create a society where human need is paramount to property and profit rests with the people.

2.  Anti-Oppression Supporting Equality and Diversity: Marginalized peoples and oppressed communities are our essential and immediate allies in the work ahead. Women and people of color must be substantial in numbers -- within the membership and particularly in leadership -- of our independent socio-political network. Opposition and dismantling of racism, sexism, and other systems of oppression must be a priority for all people. It is especially important for white people working in their communities to understand, confront and help others to understand their privilege and reject the culture of white supremacy. Men, particularly cisgender and heterosexual, have a special responsibility to understand, confront, and help others to understand the nature of patriarchy and heteronormativity to cultivate safe spaces for open expression of gender and sexual orientation in order to provide a positive environment for participation and empowerment by those of all abilities, sizes and ages.

3.  Equal Rights for All Human Beings: We support self-determination and treaty rights for the indigenous First Nations within the borders of the United States and for all peoples colonized by European powers. We believe enfranchisement, reparations, and affirmative action for women, people of color, and other victims of historic injustice and oppression sanctioned by the rule of law are necessary and essential to correct the disproportionate allocation of resources. We oppose the scapegoating and repression directed against immigrants, particularly immigrants of color. We are opposed to all forms of discrimination based on gender, race, color, ethnicity, age, class, religious beliefs or non-belief, sexual orientation and gender identity, disabilities, health status (including HIV), national origin or citizenship. We support full reproductive freedom for women and oppose all forms of violence, particularly against women and children, including domestic violence, rape, incest and sexual harassment.

4.  Equal Justice for All: We oppose the deep-seated racism, sexism and classism that permeate our criminal justice system. We call for a reformative program to re-structure and re-train law enforcement agencies and personnel currently steeped in a culture of racism, sexism, corruption and brutality. We support the development of a humane, restorative justice system focused genuinely towards rehabilitation of those who have engaged in anti-social activity, that punishes based on behavior rather than race/gender/gender identity/class, and which depends on alternatives to incarceration except for those who pose a clear and imminent danger to society unless incarcerated. We oppose the racist and class-biased death penalty as cruel and unusual punishment. Drug addiction and mental illness should be treated as issues of public health, not criminal justice. We oppose the use of forced prison labor for private profit. We support the development of a legal system whose participants--judges, lawyers, court personnel, police, penal staff, jurors--reflect the class, race and gender composition of the affected community and individuals.

5. Coalition and Movement Building Rooted in Solidarity Organizing: Only through the talents, experience and wisdom of all persons is mutual governance and a system rooted in justice possible. A powerful movement for change will emerge when everyday people aligned with grassroots activists, leaders and organizations operating from community, workplace and school power bases comes together in a unified, national, and massive independent political movement, or an alliance of political parties. Accepting leadership from and supporting the causes of those on the front lines of struggle against the impacts of systemic oppression and corporate tyranny helps us to develop relationships with our essential and immediate allies.

6.  Economic Democracy & Workers' Rights: We support the development and just transition away from economic policies of profit-maximization and private consolidation to a new economy rooted in solidarity and democratically-operated by the people in their communities and workplaces. We support workers' rights to organize, to collective bargaining, to strike without the threat of reprisals or replacement, to safe and healthy working conditions, to equal pay for equal work, and to receive a living wage, pension and benefits. We are committed to building a just and sustainable society in which the excessive and obscene concentration of corporate power and personal wealth is overcome by the achievement of basic economic rights for all: secure jobs paying living wages; decent, affordable housing; adequate food, water and clothing; universal health care; quality education; a safe, clean environment; an equitable, progressive tax system which taxes unearned wealth; sustainable food production based upon family farms and farm cooperatives; and protection from economic insecurity caused by disability, old age, sickness, accident or unemployment.

7.  Political Democracy: A democratic economy assumes a democratic political system. The current electoral system is not democratic and has been privatized by the wealthiest citizens who fund political campaigns. These winner-take-all electoral rules deny racial and political minorities fair representation and equitable share of power. We support fundamental political reforms aimed at finally realizing the full democratic promise of our country, including (but not limited to): universal right to vote; easy access to voting; publicly-financed elections with full ballot access; equal access to media for all candidates; voting rights for immigrants and convicted felons; preferential ballots (ranking candidates in order of preference) for single-candidate races; and proportional representation in electing local, state, and federal legislatures.

8.  Peace and Anti-Imperialism: We oppose the policies of militarism and the culture of violence which permeates our society. We call for major cuts in the military budget and the conversion of weapons-producing industries to socially-needed production. We oppose military intervention in sovereign nations, colonialism and neo-colonialism, economic coercion, and political interference in the sovereign affairs of any foreign nation, including the indigenous First Nations within our own national borders.

9.  Sustainable Environment: An ecologically-sustainable society requires replacing the economic policies prioritizing profit-maximization and endless "growth/productivity" compelled by multinational corporations with a democratic economy enabling people to gear production to human needs prioritizing sustainability and conservation for future generations. We support the creation of an ecological economy where everyone's basic material needs are met through the sustainable use of non-toxic and renewable energy and materials. We oppose corporate attempts to shift the liability for environmental damage onto taxpayers; polluters must pay for the restoration of environmental damage. In place of the failed policy of regulating pollution releases, we call for pollution prevention, including a rapid phase-out of chlorinated compounds, trash incinerators, nuclear power plants, and synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. We call for: a massive "Jobs for the Environment" program of public investment in the replacement of toxic technologies with ecological alternatives, including renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable organic agriculture, mass transit, biodegradable materials, solid waste reduction, recycling and clean composting, and eco-industrial parks for zero-emissions manufacturing.

10.  Political and Economic Independence: It is essential to free ourselves and remain independent from partisan politics or the quid pro quo expected by corporate or wealthy funders in order to build a movement to achieve and sustain an authentic government of, by, and for the people. We promote independent candidates and parties who subscribe to the above principles and who are outside of the Democratic and Republican parties, which are dominated by the corporate ruling class and part of the problem, not the solution. We also support independent working class solidarity and action across international borders to counter the power of multinational corporations dominating our domestic and global economies.

In the Name of Humanity, We REFUSE To Accept a Fascist America!

Donald Trump, the President-elect, is assembling a regime of grave danger.  Millions of people in the US and around the world are filled with deep anxiety, fear, and disgust. Our anguish is right and just.  Our anger must now become massive resistance –before Donald Trump is inaugurated and has the full reins of power in his hands.

Should we fail to rise with determination and daring in our millions now to stop this, the consequences for humanity will be disastrous.  We, the undersigned, know in the depths of our beings, the catastrophe that will befall the people of the world should the Trump/Pence regime assume full power.

We therefore CALL FOR A MONTH OF RESISTANCE beginning on December 19th, reaching a crescendo by the January 20th 2017 Inauguration.

Our resistance must spread rapidly to every sphere and every corner of the country. Because we refuse to accept a fascist America, millions must rise up in a resistance with a deep determination such that we create a political crisis that prevents the Trump/Pence fascist regime from consolidating its hold on the governance of society.

The Presidency of Donald Trump is illegitimate.

Donald Trump did not win the popular vote. Not even close, he lost by 2.5 million votes. He won the Electoral College – an institution set up in 1787 to protect slavery.  This legacy of the most brutal oppression of Black people has become the means that enabled the election of Trump and Pence.

More fundamentally, it is the fascist character of the Trump/Pence regime and what they are planning to do which renders it illegitimate and an immoral peril to the future of humanity and the earth itself.

Under the slogan “Make America Great Again,” Donald Trump has viciously attacked Mexicans and Muslims, threatening to register and deport millions, closing borders. He incites fear and hate of all who are “different” – nationalities, religions, or gender. He crudely demeans and degrades women, openly boasting about molesting them. He champions white supremacy and whips up a racist lynch-mob mentality. Trump has mocked the disabled. He is a bellicose militarist, who threatens to use nuclear weapons. He openly advocates war crimes — including torture. He vows to pack the Supreme Court with justices who will take away the right to abortion and gay rights. He denies science – calling climate change a hoax and will wreak devastation on the environment. He has attacked and threatened the press and stirred up his supporters to do the same. He has threatened to strip citizenship for constitutionally protected dissent. Trump has utter contempt for facts and the truth, and consistently lies to advance his agenda. As for the rule of law, Trump went so far as to openly threaten his opponent, Hillary Clinton, not only with jail, but even assassination. By any definition, Donald Trump is a fascist.  He has put together a regime that will carry out this  program, and worse.

This is fascism and it is a very serious thing. It has direction and momentum that must be stopped before it becomes too late.

Fascism foments and relies on xenophobic nationalism, racism, misogyny, and the aggressive re-institution of oppressive “traditional values.” Fascism feeds on and encourages the threat and use of violence to build a movement and come to power. Fascism, once in power, essentially eliminates traditional democratic rights. Fascism attacks, jails, even executes its opponents, and launches violent mob attacks on “minorities.” In Nazi Germany in the 1930s and ’40s, fascism did all these things. This is where this can go.  And yes, Hitler himself could “talk graciously” when he felt it would serve his interests and lull his opponents.

In the world today, shockwaves reverberate.  Over decades in the U.S. virulent movements of white supremacy and anti-immigrant hysteria have gained momentum. A narrow, intolerant, and political form of Christian fundamentalism has been brought into government and policy at all levels. The Trump/Pence cabinet and judiciary will coalesce all of this and worse at the highest level of power, with horrific consequences. No election, whether fair or fraudulent, should legitimize this. “Reaching across the aisle” only legitimizes that which is illegitimate.

If you work with fascists you normalize the road to horror. You cannot try to “wait things out.” Those who lived through Nazi Germany and sat on the sidelines, looking on as Hitler demonized, criminalized, and eventually rounded up one group after another, became shameful collaborators with monstrous crimes.  Don’t Conciliate… Don’t Accommodate… Don’t Collaborate!

The Trump Regime Must and Can Be Stopped Before It Starts!

This is not wishful thinking but could be made a reality if all who hate what is represented by this fascist regime translate our outrage into massive mobilization to create the political conditions which make this possible.  We are millions. Our only recourse now is to act together outside normal channels.  Every faction within the established power structure must be forced to respond to what we do – creating a situation where the Trump/Pence regime is prevented from ruling.

We call on each and every one who opposes what this regime stands for, and what it will do, to take part in and actively build, this resistance and refusal.  Organize.  Plan.  Act.

The Month of Resistance

Starting 12/19/16, it begins – the day the Electoral College meets to vote in each state: hold a press conference or a protest. Starting now, distribute this Call everywhere and on social media, host house meetings, fundraising events concerts and forums. Everywhere step up the resistance: walkouts from schools and work, protests against attacks and threats on Muslims, women, people of color, LGBT people – all linked to the objective of Stopping the Trump/Pence regime. The struggle must grow.

On MLK weekend, there needs to be massive demonstrations of many thousands in key cities, including Washington. D.C., that grow to millions over the next week,  protests that don’t stop . . . where people refuse to leave and more and more people stand up with conviction and courage demanding:

NO! We Refuse to Accept a Fascist America! It’s not enough just to sign this Call – millions, tens of millions of people need to become aware of it in the days and weeks ahead. Print it and distribute it everywhere you go, leave it on buses and trains, in schools, in stores, places of worship, coffee shops … make it go viral on social media … use it as a basis for participating in or organizing activities where you live.

In the Name of Humanity We REFUSE To Accept a Fascist America!

A MONTH OF MASSIVE RESISTANCE TO STOP THIS FASCISM

The Basis, The Conception and Strategic Approach

I. The Situation and the Possibilities

There exists today in this country a profound contradiction. Among huge numbers of people there is a deep anxiety, alienation, disgust and anger in relation to the recent presidential election and its outcome. Like the election process itself, this is unprecedented, certainly in modern times. At the same time, however, these sentiments and the people holding them are diffuse and, to a significant extent confused, particularly about why this has happened and what, if anything, can be done about it. After the initial outpourings of protest in the aftermath of the election, a certain resignation, accompanied by depression and fear, has begun to set in among many—consciously and deliberately fed by politicians, the media and other institutions and representatives of the established order, along with a number of “commentators,” “pundits,” and others, who have been working to “normalize” the fascism that has prevailed through the election.

Even though Trump decisively lost the popular vote, he proclaims that he has been given a “clear mandate,” and we are repeatedly told that there is no alternative but to accept what has happened through the election and just “hope” that things will not be as bad as feared, that the fascist regime that is poised to take power will not actually implement its program. Still, it would be a very serious error to underestimate the breadth of the angst and outrage which continues to be felt among so many people in this country (as well as many others around the world) regarding what has happened through this election. It is true that the current widespread opposition to this fascist regime could end up becoming deeply disoriented, demoralized, and decimated through repression. But it is also true that the current angst and outrage could be transformed, in a very short, telescoped period of time, into resistance which reaches such massive proportions, and is characterized by such a depth of determination, that it actually creates a “crisis of rule,” and prevents the Trump/Pence fascist regime from consolidating its hold on the governance of society.

For this possibility to be real, there must be, starting now, a significant core of people that is firmly united around the orientation and determination of refusing to accept a fascist America, and is doing everything possible to give the most powerful organized expression to the mass sentiment that exists in opposition to this fascist regime—to transform this mass sentiment into massive resistance, bringing forward growing waves of people, numbering in the millions and millions, in a very short period of time, stepping outside of and going up against the “established norms” of “how things are done,” determined and daring to actually prevent this fascist regime from taking over and implementing its program. There is no “guarantee” that these efforts, even if manifested in a truly massive resistance, will succeed. But there is the possibility. And it can be said with certainty that, if such massive resistance is not built, if this fascist regime is able to consolidate its hold over society and begin implementing its program, the consequences of this, not only for people in this country but for the masses of humanity—indeed for humanity as a whole and for its future—will be nothing short of disastrous.

II. The Illegitimacy of the Trump/Pence Fascist Regime

Trump’s election itself was illegitimate and his ascension to power would be even more so, and must not be allowed.

Donald Trump did not win the popular vote. Not even close, he lost by 2.5 million votes. He won the Electoral College which is the product and legacy of slavery. James Madison, arguably the most influential of the founders, argued that direct popular election for president would give states without a huge population of slaves too much sway, as it would bypass the “compromise” that had allowed the southern states to count slaves as part of their population in apportioning representation in Congress. The fact that Trump was decisively defeated in the popular vote and that, moreover, Republican Party representatives and operatives have over the years, especially since the overturning of the Voting Rights Act in 2013 by the Supreme Court, systematically suppressed the votes of Black, Latino and poor people, further highlight the illegitimacy of this election. The will of the people was NOT expressed in this election.

More fundamental is the illegitimacy of such a fascist regime. As many have noted, Hitler himself came to power through the process of elections and established legal procedures. We can see in retrospect the profound and terrible error of those who hoped it would blow over, who believed that Hitler would expose himself and fall from power on his own, who had faith that the “wise leaders” of the system would somehow intervene, or even those who confined their resistance to helping others survive until the regime would somehow fall on its own.

This is not an exaggerated comparison. Trump has made clear through his campaign and now in his appointments and behavior in its aftermath that he intends to radically attack the rights of immigrants, Muslims, Black people, women, gay and trans people, the disabled, and many others who have been historically oppressed in this society. He has made clear that he will pursue a geopolitical policy that will be very short on facts and long on aggression, threats of aggression, insane nuclear proliferation, torture and threats of torture, and continually going to the brink of war and no doubt beyond, and all while stoking the fires of xenophobia and scapegoating. He has made clear that not only has he no respect for the freedom of the press and expression, but that he intends to attack it – both through threatened legal prosecution and suppression, and through unleashing his newly empowered and extremely toxic minions. As for academic freedom, the “watch list” is an early warning sign of what is in store. Trump and his top operatives, like Flynn, take lying to a new level, trampling on facts and even the very idea of objectivity and truth. He has already begun to seed the government with Christian fundamentalist theocrats and breathed new life into anti-Semitism. He has not only threatened to overturn Roe v. Wade and continued to hold out the threat of punishing women (and Pence’s state, Indiana, prosecuted and actually imprisoned a woman for a miscarriage during his time as governor), but – using his “bully pulpit” – Trump has created an atmosphere around women that has further empowered rape culture and already damaged the lives and chances of every woman and girl in this country. His views, policies, and appointments on the environment will seriously and qualitatively exacerbate a situation that is already heading to disaster. He has, perhaps most egregiously of all, super-charged the notion that this is a “white man’s country,” in which the rights and existence of Black people and other people of color count for nothing and he has put proven white supremacists – people of the ilk of Bannon and Sessions – in positions of power to use that force of the state to directly back that belief up; while he has, at the same time, given impetus to every fascist, neo-Nazi and bigot to directly express themselves by violently going after people who are not white, male, Christian or straight. There will not only be no checks whatsoever on the white supremacy and vile racism that permeates the police departments and prison guards of this country, the very worst within them will be given carte blanche and encouragement from the highest offices of the land – as they have already. The days of white vigilanteism and, yes, lynch mobs – days that never really went away, as the terrible cases of Trayvon Martin and the Charleston massacre remind us – will now be back with a vengeance and, again, with encouragement from the highest offices of the land.

To treat such a regime as legitimate, to allow it to come to power, to do so when the historical precedents are so plentiful and fraught with lessons – this would be the height of moral and political irresponsibility. Talk of making Trump a “one-term president,” or of building for the 2018 elections is foolishness. It discounts the damage that will be done to real people, in their billions, in the meantime. It further takes on faith that the already distorted and weighted procedures that gave Trump the presidency will still be in place – when there is nothing to suggest that Trump will not act further to cut down and cut off even those rights that do exist, and plenty to suggest that he will. Hopes in checks and balances in an era of virtually unbridled executive power and at a time when Trump himself will not only make at least one very decisive Supreme Court appointment and will be able to fill, very quickly, the 30% of the federal bench that now lies vacant is similarly vain.

It is the moral duty of us all to seriously confront the potential consequences of what this regime could do in power, and then to act accordingly.

III. In the Name of Humanity, We REFUSE to Accept a Fascist America!

What must happen: not just thousands, or tens of thousands, but literally millions and millions of people must be mobilized now in determined, defiant, massive political resistance and refusal to allow fascism to come to power.

NOW is the Time to STOP this Before it Starts!

And this must be done before this regime officially takes power, isolates and crushes opposition, and moves forcefully to implement its fascist program.

The aim must be nothing less than to create such a profound political crisis before the intended inauguration (January 20, 2017) that the fascist regime is actually not able to take the reins of government.

Imagine if people, in the tens of millions, filled the streets, powerfully declaring that this regime is illegitimate and demanding that it not be allowed to rule! The whole political landscape would be dramatically transformed, every faction within the established power structure would be forced to respond—and all this could well lead to a situation in which this fascist regime is actually prevented from ruling. This is not some idle dream but something which could be made a reality if all those who hate what is represented by this fascist regime translate their outrage into firm determination and massive mobilization to create the conditions which make this possible.

For this to happen, everyone who is opposed to what this regime stands for, and what it will do, must throw themselves into taking part in, and actively building, this resistance and refusal—now, and in an ongoing way: A Month of Massive Resistance to Stop This Fascism!
This massive outpouring and uprising of millions must be built through ongoing, and increasing, acts of defiance and resistance, in every corner of society. We propose that this month officially begin with acts of resistance on December 19, the day of the electoral college voting and extend to the inauguration. What follows are particular points and steps to do this.

We have drafted a unifying Call that we feel can rally the needed tens of millions. This Call should be signed by people of moral authority – including yourself! — from every walk of life in this country and must be spread through many diverse media and channels throughout the country (and the world) as a whole, with a major impact on public opinion. We are also reaching out to graphic artists to condense the basic message here into a simple but profound graphic design that could quickly “take off” and become a mass “symbol of defiance” (this could, for example, be something as simple as the single word NO!, with a striking and easily recognizable design). We propose that this Call be mass-released going into December 19th, and that the period directly after the 19th be a time in which this is spread throughout all of society, and that people take the time of the holidays to hold parties, salons, discussions, gatherings of all kinds to discuss this, and to make this a part of their holiday religious observances and celebrations.

On the basis of this unifying orientation and stand, we should reach out to all those now taking up ways to fight this regime and encourage people in all parts of society to increasingly take initiative to carry out acts of defiance and political resistance of many different kinds and on many different levels (in terms of size and scope, etc.), including such things as walkouts from schools, and from jobs; protests against particular outrages against people of color, women, LGBT people, immigrants, Muslims, and other “targeted” groups; major mobilizations on the Martin Luther King holiday that link this to the fight against this fascist regime; and other actions that people, all over the country, take the initiative to organize. This defiance and resistance must increasingly put its stamp on and set the terms of political debate and activity in society, in determined opposition to the forces which are carrying out, supporting, or working to “normalize” this fascism and promote capitulation to it. As part of this, we propose manifestations on New Year’s Eve itself, of many different kinds, including demonstrations at Trump properties all over, here and around the world.

We encourage people everywhere to take initiative to build organization of various kinds to promote and carry out this defiance and resistance, in line with this basic orientation and stand. Organization must be quickly built that is capable of acting as a national coordinating center to link together, around the common orientation and stand, the many diverse actions of defiance and political resistance. This must be combined with a great deal of initiative by people in local areas, and in all different spheres of society, all over the country.

We who sign this commit to reaching out to others, urgently and in a sustained way, not only putting our names and reputations on the line to help build this resistance, but also actively taking part in building it—from here forward. We should not only encourage but be part of initiating events of different kinds, including major artistic performances and presentations, and utilize every venue and means we have for reaching the people, to promote this stand and mobilize people into the ranks of the resistance.

We will need to raise huge sums of money, now and in an ongoing way, from donations big and small, to provide the financial basis that is needed for this to become a reality. Efficient, not overly bureaucratic and cumbersome, organizational means must be quickly developed and utilized to allocate and utilize these funds in the best ways in line with the goal of developing the mass resistance that is urgently needed to actually stop this fascism.

All this must be building toward a massive mobilization of millions at a key concentration point (or points) as well as in some other key areas, before the scheduled inauguration, united around the clear and firm stand: In the Name of Humanity, We Refuse to Accept a Fascist America! and This Fascist Regime Must Be Stopped Before It Starts–It Must Not Be Allowed To Take the Reins of Government!

We send this to you with open arms and open hearts. The times demand unprecedented breadth, diversity and determination and a movement of integrity, largeness of mind and generosity of spirit. Let us all rise to that.

DisruptJ20: Call for a bold mobilization against the inauguration of Donald Trump on January 20, 2017

On Friday, January 20, 2017, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as President of the United States.

We call on all people of good conscience to join in disrupting the ceremonies. If Trump is to be inaugurated at all, let it happen behind closed doors, showing the true face of the security state Trump will preside over. It must be made clear to the whole world that the vast majority of people in the United States do not support his presidency or consent to his rule.

Trump stands for tyranny, greed, and misogyny. He is the champion of neo-nazis and white Nationalists, of the police who kill the Black, Brown and poor on a daily basis, of racist border agents and sadistic prison guards, of the FBI and NSA who tap your phone and read your email.

He is the harbinger of even more climate catastrophe, deportation, discrimination, and endless war. He continues to deny the existence of climate change, in spite of all the evidence, putting the future of the whole human race at stake. The KKK, Vladimir Putin, Golden Dawn, and the Islamic State all cheered his victory. If we let his inauguration go unchallenged, we are opening the door to the future they envision.

Trump’s success confirms the bankruptcy of representative democracy. Rather than using the democratic process as an alibi for inaction, we must show that no election could legitimize his agenda. Neither the Democrats nor any other political party or politician will save us—they just offer a weaker version of the same thing. If there is going to be a positive change in this society, we have to make it ourselves, together, through direct action.

From day one, the Trump presidency will be a disaster. #DisruptJ20 will be the
start of the resistance. We must take to the streets and protest, blockade, disrupt, intervene, sit in, walk out, rise up, and make more noise and good trouble than the establishment can bear. The parade must be stopped. We must delegitimize Trump and all he represents. It’s time to defend ourselves, our loved ones, and the world that sustains us as if our lives depend on it—because they do.

In Washington, DC

DC will not be hospitable to the Trump administration. Every corporation must openly declare whether they side with him or with the people who will suffer at his hands. Thousands will converge and demonstrate resistance to the Trump regime. Save the date. #DisruptJ20

Around the US

If you can’t make it to Washington, DC on January 20, take to the streets wherever you are. We call on our comrades to organize demonstrations and other actions for the night of January 20. There is also a call for a general strike to take place. Organize a walkout at your school now. Workers: call out sick and take the day off. No work, no school, no shopping, no housework. #DisruptJ20

Around the World

If you are living outside the US, you can take action at US embassies, borders, or other symbols of neocolonial power. Our allegiance is not to “making America great again,” but to all of humanity and the planet. #DisruptJ20

Spread the word. Join the fight. #DisruptJ20

Who is behind all this?

#DisruptJ20 is supported by the work of the DC Welcoming Committee, a collective of experienced local activists and out-of-work gravediggers acting with national support. We’re building the framework needed for mass protests to shut down the inauguration of Donald Trump and planning widespread direct actions to make that happen. We’re also providing services like housing, food, and even legal assistance to anyone who wants to join us.

The DC Welcoming Committee isn’t funded by any non-profits, isn’t connected to any political parties, rejects all forms of domination and oppression, particularly those based on race, class, and gender, organizes by consensus, and embraces a diversity of tactics.

What are you planning?

We’re planning a series of massive direct actions that will shut down the Inauguration ceremonies and any related celebrations–the Inaugural parade, the Inaugural balls, you name it. We’re also planning to paralyze the city itself, using blockades and marches to stop traffic and even public transit. And hey, because we like fun, we’re even going to throw some parties.

We’ll have more information soon on how you can plug into specific direct actions, but if you’re coming to town and looking for one place to go: Come to McPherson Square on Friday, January 20th, starting at 9 AM. We’ll be gathering there to launch actions and regroup throughout the day.

What is direct action?

Direct Action is when you take collective action to make social change without giving power over to an authority or middle person. We don’t ask permission or put our faith in electoral politics, instead, we use our bodies to stop the smooth operation of the system we oppose. Examples of direct action include the ongoing resistance at Standing Rock against the Dakota Access Pipeline, the street and highway blockades of Black Lives Matter, or the occupations of public squares during Occupy Wall Street.

But what are you for?

Make sure to check out our call to action, if you need reasons to join us in the streets. We fully support the massive and spontaneous eruption of resistance across the United States that’s happened since the election. We’re hoping that #DisruptJ20 can help people find each other, connect issues, and be a part of building a movement for a better world. Beyond that, the DC Welcoming Committee doesn’t feel the need to speak on anyone’s behalf. The anger on the streets speaks loudly enough.

Organizing principles

The DC Counter-Inaugural Welcoming Committee has endorsed the following principals which stand:

DC Organizing principles

  • Talk to Local Organizers
  • Advance Local Organizing
  • Don’t Just Use Our City – Strengthen It

St. Paul Principals

  1. Our solidarity will be based on respect for a diversity of tactics and the
    plans of other groups.
  2. The actions and tactics used will be organized to maintain a separation of
    time or space.
  3. Any debates or criticisms will stay internal to the movement, avoiding any
public or media denunciations of fellow activists and events.
  4. We oppose any state repression of dissent, including surveillance,
infiltration, disruption and violence. we agree not to assist law enforcement
    actions against activists and others.

Massive Protests at Trump’s Inauguration Aim to Set a Tone of Resistance for the Coming Years

Massive Resistance includes Rallies, Marches, Parties, Workshops, and Acts of Protest

Twelve Security Checkpoints will Feature Twelve Issue-Specific Protests
Press Conference, 9:30 AM-10:30 AM, Thursday, Jan 12, 2017, Location TBA

Washington DC — Activists and organizers are planning massive protests and acts of resistance during the inauguration of Donald J. Trump on January 20. The DC Counter-Inaugural Welcoming Committee, also known as DisruptJ20, is planning a massive permitted, family-friendly march and rally that day, as well as unpermitted anticapitalist marches, an activist party that evening, and a web of protests at individual security checkpoints.

DisruptJ20 is also coordinating mass housing for activists from out of town, legal support for arrestees and others, medic teams to be present in the street, de-escalation teams to respond to conflict, media teams to relay current information, gathering spaces for activists, and more. Information such as welcome packets, maps, and event calendars will be distributed to the press and public.

Beginning at 9 AM on January 20, McPherson Square in downtown Washington DC will be a DisruptJ20 staging area and rallying point for many marches, as well as spontaneous, unpermitted events. An unpermitted, anticapitalist march will begin at 10 AM in Logan Circle. A fully-permitted DisruptJ20 march will begin at 12 PM at Columbus Circle and march to McPherson Square. Another permitted march organized by Occupy Inauguration will start from Malcolm X Park (often called Meridian Hill) and march downtown to McPherson Square join DisruptJ20. McPherson Square will contain tents, portable toilets, a stage, sound system, signage, a medic area, food donations, and other amenities. More unpermitted actions are likely to occur at some point after 3 PM and continue into the evening.

Colorful disruptions will occur right at the Inaugural Parade Route. Twelve checkpoints have been identified by DisruptJ20 organizers that participants will have to pass through in order to attend the inaugural parade and ceremony. To call attention to the many threats faced by people and planet, each of these twelve checkpoints will be the site of an issue-specific protest. Issues will include racial justice, immigrant rights, LGBTQ+, antiwar, border justice, labor, climate, and other issues.

Each checkpoint protest is being organized by a group or set of groups in collaboration with DisruptJ20. In the past, each checkpoint has included metal detectors, police officers, the secret service, and national guard. Details and logistics are still being pulled together for these twelve actions, and information will be released publicly as soon as possible.

“We’re bringing widespread civil resistance to the streets of Washington DC through protests, direct actions, and even parties, and we want you there with us,” said Legba Carrefour, an organizer with DisruptJ20 who is helping plan anticapitalist marches and other activities. “Join us for a bold mobilization against Trump's inauguration.”

Many groups are allied with DisruptJ20 in sending a clear message during the J20 week. A climate-specific day of action will occur on Thursday, January 18, culminating in a Earth2Trump Roadshow with performers and speakers. Antifascist groups are planning a protest at the “Deploraball,” a Trump celebration planned by white supremacists, Nazis, and rape apologists on January 19 at the National Press Club. ANSWER Coalition is planning a large rally on January 20. A #Trump420 event planned by the DC Marijuana Justice Coalition will feature people handing out marijuana joints. Through the evening, the Peace Ball, the UnNagural, and the Unity Ball will all provide entertainment, music, and libations while standing opposed to Trump’s agenda. The All in Service DC campaign has coordinated for bars and restaurants to give donations to local nonprofits serving at-risk communities through the lucrative weekend. The People’s Inaugural Ball on January 20 and People’s Inauguration on January 21 are being planned by #StayWokeAndFight with Howard University to call for racial justice. The Women’s March on Washington will occur on Saturday, January 21.

“We know that a lot of people out there agree with us. People know that now is the time to resist,” said Lacy MacAuley, a member of the DisruptJ20 Media Team and the DC Antifascist Coalition. “We protest to set a tone of resistance for the coming years. Trump is a sign of a dangerous shift toward fascism, hate, and exclusion. Many of us protest because Trump represents a threat to our very existence. Many of us do not have the luxury of remaining quiet through this crisis. We simply must stand up, and stand against what Trump represents.”

From January 14 to January 16, DisruptJ20 will hold the DisruptJ20 Action Camp, a series of trainings and workshops in DC to prepare people for upcoming actions, particularly those around the Inauguration. The trainings aim to provide space for participants to collectively analyze and discuss why resistance and action is important under the Trump administration, how we can resist, and what future our actions are building towards.

On Thursday, January 12 at 9:30 AM, a press conference will be hosted by the DisruptJ20 Media Team to go over details of the protests and acts of resistance that we can expect to see throughout the J20 week. Location to be announced shortly.

More releases of information from the DisruptJ20 Media Team are forthcoming, and there will be a press conference call on the evening of January 20 to provide information on the day’s activities. Please visit our DisruptJ20 Media page if you wish to sign up to receive these releases.

DisruptJ20 Finalizes Inaugural Protests, Security Checkpoint Action Plans

Fully-Permitted “Festival of Resistance,” Unpermitted Marches, and Protests at Security Checkpoints with Black Lives Matter, Immigrants and Muslims, LGBTQ+ community, Feminists, Climate Justice, Native Americans, Labor, and more

St Stephen’s Church Auditorium, 1525 Newton St NW, Washington DC

Washington DC — Activists are releasing the full calendar of the massive protests and acts of resistance throughout the week of the inauguration of Donald J. Trump on January 20. Activists met yesterday evening to finalize protest plans in a meeting of over 100 people representing groups from across the country who are involved in Inaugural protests. A consensus “spokescouncil” model, in the same tradition of the 1999 Seattle WTO protests and the Occupy Wall Street movement, to coordinate plans among a wide variety of allies representing a diverse set of focus areas. Details for these protests include specific locations and media contacts for each action on January 20, such as the Black Lives Matter action at the checkpoint at 4th & C St NW, the "Qockblockade Brigade" LGBTQ+ action at the checkpoint at 13th & E St NW, the "Future is Feminist" action at 10th & E St NW, and the "Communities Under Attack" action for Muslims and immigrants at 12th & E St NW. More details are below.

Events, meetings, and organizing activities are hosted by the DC Counter-Inaugural Welcoming Committee, also known as DisruptJ20, which is planning a “Festival of Resistance,” a massive permitted, family-friendly march and rally on the 20th, as well as an unpermitted “Anticapitalist Bloc” march, protests at all twelve Secret Service security checkpoints, activist parties, and more. The goal is to give expression to the massive opposition to Trump’s right-wing, racist, and misogynist agenda. Organizers intend to demonstrate that people of conscience are the majority, and take steps towards organizing that sentiment into a force that can have an impact on Trump’s ability to claim a mandate, setting a tone of resistance for the coming years.

UPDATE ON INAUGURATION PROTESTS - January 20, 2017, 7:30 PM
Contact: Lacy MacAuley

Release of Arrest Numbers for Today's DisruptJ20 Protests at the Inauguration in Washington DC

- Legal Team files lawsuit alleging excessive force by police

- About 120 protesters were arrested today

Washington DC - About 120 people were arrested today protesting at Donald Trump's Inauguration in Washington DC, according to estimates by the DisruptJ20 Legal Team. The legal team has individual names of about 100 protesters in its database, which are for individuals whose cases are being closely followed. For almost all of these individuals, the charge that is anticipated by the legal team is "misdemeanor riot."

To respond to observations of police violence, a lawsuit was filed in DC federal court this afternoon alleging excessive force during arrests today at 12th and L St NW, in which protesters were penned in and not allowed to leave, to include members of the press and legal observers. (To view this legal document, please visit: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/3388133-Complaint-PACER.html)

Tonight's events include spontaneous marches on many Inaugural balls, as well as the Ist District jail, where many of the 120 protesters are being held. Some are likely to be in the New York Avenue jail. Those who are in jail are expected to spend the night in jail and be arraigned tomorrow at the DC Superior Court (500 Indiana Ave, Room C10), starting at 11 AM and continuing throughout the day.

You can find other relevant legal updates on the DisruptJ20 Legal Team's Twitter handle, @DisruptJ20Legal.

Please note that the DisruptJ20 Media Team had previously anticipated hosting a press conference call this evening to address legal issues and other events. However, as members of our organizing team have been arrested without having planned to do so, this conference call is cancelled for today. Our apologies for any inconvenience.

MPD Statement on Acts of Vandalism Earlier Today:

At approximately 10:30 a.m., an organized group was observed marching south in Northwest Washington. On their way, members of the group acting in a concerted effort engaged in acts of vandalism and several instances of destruction of property. More specifically, the group damaged vehicles, destroyed the property of multiple businesses, and ignited smaller isolated fires while armed with crowbars, hammers, and asps. Preliminary information indicates the group collectively engaged in these criminal acts. MPD members were alerted to the criminal activity, and responded swiftly to contain and detain the involved individuals in the area of 12th and L Streets, NW. At this time, numerous arrests have been made and those individuals have been charged with rioting. Investigation into the incident remains ongoing. Pepper spray and other control devices were used to control the criminal actors and protect persons and property. During the incident, police vehicles were damaged and two uniformed officers sustained minor injuries from coordinated attacks by members of the group that were attempting to avoid arrest .

— January 20, 2017 —

The Resistance begins.

“Make yourself unavailable for servitude”- Toni Cade Bambara

Our Pledge

We pledge to create a resistance movement that makes Trump unable to govern our oppression;  unable to deceive the people, to make the people accept his reign of hatred. We refuse to give hatred a chance to govern, a chance to roll back civil and human rights, a chance to deport millions of people, a chance to create camps and registries for Muslims, a chance to expand the prison industrial complex, a chance to expand its drone wars, or a chance to turn back the gains won by our struggles.

We pledge resistance to this renewed attack on our communities.  As we resist, we will create new governing institutions, new economic relationships, and new ways of being human.  What we will not do is sanction and/or normalize “overt” white supremacy.

Let’s start now. Let’s make the so-called inauguration day a day to resist a day to be ungovernable and plan for a new future and new way.

On January 20, self-organize a day of action. If possible don’t ask for permits assert your right to free speech and assembly, let it be a day of mass demonstrations, civil disobedience, and direct action and strikes.

In the evening of January 20 at 6pm join us for a nationwide town-hall on what comes next in these times.

ENDORSERS

Malcolm X Grassroots Movement; Organization for Human Rights & Democracy; Kali Akuno; Kamau Franklin; Community Movement Builders; Lamis Deek; Al-Awda; Kazembe Balagun; Jed Brandt; JARED BALL; Rosa clemente; Cliff Albright; Black Votes Matter Fund; Former Black Panthers - Dhoruba Bin-Wahad, Ashanti Alston.

WHY WE RESIST

We resist because we refuse to allow Trump and his views on climate change and his deep investment in the oil industry lead us to the brink of human destruction with his “drill baby drill” and “burn baby burn” orientation. We will not allow the 6th great extinction to advance on our watch.

We resist because the United States has always been a problematic project and we refuse to go backwards on the limited political, economic, and social gains that have been won by Indigenous and oppressed peoples, women, religious minorities, LGBTQI communities and individuals, workers, children, and in the protection of our life-giving environment. We refuse to accept the wanton reintroduction of white supremacy, right wing populism and fascism, state sanctioned patriarchy, and the expansion and consolidation of a neo-Confederacy.

We resist because we will not allow US imperialism to go unchallenged. We refuse to allow the Trump regime to allow for the ethnocide of the Palestinian people, to start a war of aggression with Iran, to legitimize a puppet regime in Haiti, to escalate tensions with China, to support a coup d’état in Venezuela, to intensify AFRICOM’s acts of aggression on the African continent, to threaten and sanction the progressive governments of Bolivia and Ecuador, and the list goes on. We cannot and will not sit idly by and allow US imperialist expansion and aggression to advance either within the territories it currently controls or on the peoples, nations, and states outside of its jurisdiction.

We resist because we must. We resist knowing that one day of action will not stop any of the destructive plans of the Trump regime and the neo-Confederates that now control ¾ of the state governments. This day of action is a beginning. A way for us to come together, resist together, and to start the hard work of building a new political force and program that will help us co-construct a liberated future.

Join us!

“Build and Fight; Fight and Build” a Program for the Future

We cannot afford to “wait and see” what the Trump regime is going to do, or “give them a chance”. His cabinet appointments clearly indicate that we have to take him for his word, and that he clearly meant all of the racist, xenophobic, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, China bashing, queer hating and misogynist rhetoric that he espoused and he fully intends on implementing all of the promises and policies he proposed to target these subjects on the mission to make the United States a white republic once again.

Therefore, we should expect the Trump regime and the Tea Party dominated neo-Confederate state governments to further demonize any and all opposition, to ramp up surveillance to even greater levels, to unleash massive amounts of repression and terror (from both government and reactionary white supremacist forces) on progressive social movements and non-compliant populations, and use various types of economic threats to subject people to their will. Hoping and praying for things to work themselves out for the better won’t work. Efforts at trying to isolate yourself, your family, and your community and shield it from the repression that is coming won’t work. Trump and the reactionary forces that he embodies and represents must be defeated, politically, socially, and economically. Solidarity and joint struggle are our greatest forms of both offensive and defensive resistance. But, the solidarity must be practical, programmatic, and visionary.

To defeat Trump and the neo-Confederates we have to develop a strategic “Build and Fight; Fight and Build” program. This program must address the imperative need to build economic and political power from the ground up – amongst workers, the underemployed, unemployed and structurally unemployable on the community, county, state and national levels.

Both dimensions of our Build and Fight program we believe must have offensive and defensive dimensions to them. What follows are some preliminary thoughts on what we believe must be built and/or strengthened going forward, to not only survive the Trumpocalype, but to build the world we and our children and great grandchildren need.

The Build

  1. Build Community Farms and Food Distribution Centers to address basic subsistence needs of the people in our communities.
  2. Build Production or Supply Chain Networks and Alliances to ensure food security and sovereignty on municipal and larger scales.
  3. Build Community Energy Networks and Centers to address basic energy needs in our communities and municipalities.
  4. Build and Reclaim Common Spaces to ensure that communities have space for various types of production, community engagement, and the practice participatory democracy and community governance.
  5. Build Cooperatives (Worker, Consumer, and Community) to address the basic material and service needs of the people in our community.
  6. Build People’s Assemblies and/or other types Vehicles for the Practice of Participatory Democracy to continue the struggle for equality and equity.

The Fight Back

  1. Build Self-Defense Committee’s and Educational Campaigns to protect our communities from state and reactionary militia repression and terror.
  2. Build Sanctuary Networks to Defend Immigrants, Muslims, Organizers and the Persecuted.
  3. Build Autonomous Communication and Information Sharing Institutions and Networks to ensure safe and direct connection amongst the people in our communities and networks.
  4. Build Broad Civil Action Units to engage in Massive Civil Disobedience, Occupation and General Strike Actions to stop the advance of political and economic reaction.

None of these initiatives can be built overnight and they cannot be done individually. They require organization on various different scales and scopes.

Starting with your endorsement, we propose initiating a process of ongoing engagement and organizing to build a national network that can and will grow into a radical force of political resistance, power, and vision to move us out of the forest of gloom that is presently surrounding us.

We propose the following organizing process after January 20th:

  1. That there be a national evaluation call immediately after the day of resistance on January 20th.
  2. That we host municipal forums and/or assemblies to discuss the program presented above and how it can be applied and/or expanded in our municipalities.
  3. That we host regional organizing and resistance networking gatherings in April or May.
  4. That we host a national networking and resistance coordination meeting in the summer of 2017.

The Women's March on Washington

Mission & Vision

We stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families - recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country.

OUR MISSION
The rhetoric of the past election cycle has insulted, demonized, and threatened many of us - immigrants of all statuses, Muslims and those of diverse religious faiths, people who identify as LGBTQIA, Native people, Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, survivors of sexual assault - and our communities are hurting and scared. We are confronted with the question of how to move forward in the face of national and international concern and fear.

In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore.

The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.

We support the advocacy and resistance movements that reflect our multiple and intersecting identities. We call on all defenders of human rights to join us. This march is the first step towards unifying our communities, grounded in new relationships, to create change from the grassroots level up. We will not rest until women have parity and equity at all levels of leadership in society. We work peacefully while recognizing there is no true peace without justice and equity for all.

HEAR OUR VOICE.

“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.— Audre Lorde

GUIDING PRINCIPLES
Women’s rights are human rights, regardless of a woman’s race, ethnicity, religion, immigration status, sexual identity, gender expression, economic status, age or disability. We practice empathy with the intent to learn about the intersecting identities of each other. We will suspend our first judgement and do our best to lead without ego. We follow the principles of Kingian nonviolence, which are defined as follows:

  • Principle 1: Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people. It is a positive force confronting the forces of injustice and utilizes the righteous indignation and spiritual, emotional, and intellectual capabilities of people as the vital force for change and reconciliation.
  • Principle 2: The Beloved Community is the framework for the future. The nonviolent concept is an overall effort to achieve a reconciled world by raising the level of relationships among people to a height where justice prevails and persons attain their full human potential.
  • Principle 3: Attack forces of evil, not persons doing evil. The nonviolent approach helps one analyze the fundamental conditions, policies and practices of the conflict rather than reacting to one’s opponents or their personalities.
  • Principle 4: Accept suffering without retaliation for the sake of the cause to achieve our goal. Self-chosen suffering is redemptive and helps the movement grow in a spiritual as well as a humanitarian dimension. The moral authority of voluntary suffering for a goal communicates the concern to one’s own friends and community as well as to the opponent.
  • Principle 5: Avoid internal violence of the spirit as well as external physical violence. The nonviolent attitude permeates all aspects of the campaign. It provides a mirror type reflection of the reality of the condition to one’s opponent and the community at large. Specific activities must be designed to maintain a high level of spirit and morale during a nonviolent campaign.

Statement on WMW Name

The Women’s March on Washington began as an organically growing groundswell the day after the 2017 election when a grandmother in Hawaii p roposed to forty of her friends to go march in Washington, D.C. Initially the name Million Women March was used, however, the name was quickly changed when its historical roots were brought to the founding members’ attention.

2017 marks the 20th anniversary of the 1997 Million Women March, a mobilization started by Dr. Phile Chionesu which brought thousands of African American women together in Philadelphia for the social, political, and economic development to the black community. We’ve been in touch with Dr. Phile to verbally apologize for any harm caused by the use of the name.

It was out of respect for the 1997 Million Women March and in tribute to the h istoric March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963 that the name was changed to the Women’s March on Washington. The original March on Washington – at which Martin Luther King Jr delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech – set a precedent for hundreds of thousands of people of diverse backgrounds to gather in Washington, D.C. for the advancement of human rights, and specifically to demand civil and economic rights for African Americans. One of the legacies of this march was the inspiration of other historical marches, including by the 1965 March on Washington for Peace in Vietnam and the four Marches on Washington for the rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Transgender people occurring in 1979, 1987, 1993 and 2000. The diversity of these historical moments reflect the many communities drawn to the 2017 Women’s March on Washington, and continue to be our inspiration in the fight for justice and human rights for all. It is in this spirit and our desire to embrace the legacy of advancing equity and human rights set by these marches that we call on all people to join us at the Women’s March on Washington on January 21st.

Women’s March On Washington: Origins and Inclusion

“It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.” -Audre Lorde

We have heard concerns voiced that some do not feel adequately represented in the Women’s March on Washington (WMW). We want to state to you clearly: we see you, we hear you, and we understand. As witnessed by the recent election, there has been a profound deepening of the divisions in our country. Etched in history, these divisions cleave us from one another across the lines of racial, ethnic, religious, and sexual identity.

We seek to address these divisions and stand together in the face of injustice. Together, we will raise our voices in the service of all people.

The WMW began organically on November 9, the day after the election, after Teresa Shook a.k.a. Maui, a grandmother residing in Hawaii, proposed a call to action to forty of her friends to march in Washington, D.C. Her friends invited their friends, and by the time the idea hit the Facebook group Pantsuit Nation, there were a number of women administering pages generating thousands of sign-ups by the hour.

Bob Bland was one of those women. Working with Evvie Harmon, Fontaine Pearson, and Breanne Butler among others, they consolidated the pages into one united effort. The reality is that the women who initially started organizing were almost all white. As the movement grew, they sought ways to address this crucial issue. One of those who signed on early, Vanessa Wruble, took the initiative not just to include women of other backgrounds, but to make sure that their voices were centered in the convening and the decision making process. It was, and is, clear that the Women's March on Washington cannot be a success unless it represents women of all backgrounds.

The first step was to engage Tamika D. Mallory, Carmen Perez and Linda Sarsour as National Co-Chairs to work alongside Bob and her team. In 2015, they led a march from New York City to Washington, D.C, traveling an impressive two hundred and fifty miles on foot to demand changes in America’s criminal justice system. These women are not tokens; they are dynamic and powerful leaders who have been organizing intersectional mobilizations for their entire careers. Together with the original team, they brought on an incredible group of women to set the agenda and handle the coordination of the WMW, including Janaye Ingram, Tabitha St. Bernard, Karen Waltuch, and Cassady Fendlay. The first week was a heavy lift to ensure a solid structure, but the organizers continue to work hard to engage people from diverse communities. Now voices including Asian and Pacific Islanders, Trans Women, Native Americans, disabled women, men, children, and many others, can be centered in the evolving expression of this grassroots movement.

It is important to all of us that the white women engaged this effort understand their privilege, and acknowledge the struggle that women of color face. We have and will continue to encourage our state organizers to reach out to women from all communities. This means not only asking them to join the WMW, but also challenging our new community to show up in support of the efforts of other activists and fighters for justice.

The work of this march is not only to stand together in sisterhood and solidarity for the protection of our rights, our safety, our families and our environment -- but it is also to build relationships and mend the divides between our communities. It’s hard work, and it will be ongoing. It’s an ambitious goal – one that reaches far beyond January 21st – but we believe that there is no other way forward. Only together can we march towards freedom.

The Women’s March on Washington is just the first step; what comes after is up to us all.

DC Anti-Fascist Coalition

Protest the Fascist Alt-Right “Deploraball”

National Press Club, 529 14th Street NW, Washington, DC 20045
19 January 8:00 pm

Will we let white supremacists, rape-culture sexists, and fascists celebrate hate in our city? Absolutely not. When these people gather to promote their truly deplorable ways, we will protest.

Members of the Alt Reich are having a fancy ball, taking a smarmy victory lap through our DC streets to celebrate their sexual assaulter in chief, Donald Trump. Some of their featured guests include:

  • Milo Yiannopoulis, who waged the overtly sexist “gamergate” Twitter assault, and was banned from Twitter for his racist and sexist assault on Leslie Jones (from Ghostbusters)
  • Mike Cernovich, who said date rape does not exist, made up stories about Hillary Clinton’s health, and also hates immigrants
  • Lauren Southern (their token woman), a vocal transphobic anti-feminist
  • And a host of BS artists and Fascist fake news purveyors connected to Breitbart, Infowars, Fox News, and the shadiest parts of the Republican party
We are outraged that this group, the worst of the worst, is being hosted by the National Press Club. These deplorables have demonstrated they care nothing for truth, will harass and abuse to get their way, and wait for Donald Trump to come down hard on immigrants, Muslims, people of color, women, and the left.

We must stand for a world of diversity and equity. We must stand for a world based on love and justice, not fear. We must stand for a celebration of each other’s differences, not segregation and ignorance.

We must stand against racism, Islamophobia, sexism, and all forms of oppression. We call on people of conscience to protest and help send a message to the Trump Administration and his followers: We are better than this, and we will never accept this hate in our nation’s capital.

In this opening to the inauguration there will likely be a large media presence with many cameras. We ask that protestors, do not under any circumstances initiate any violence, but protect one another and practice self-defense. Always try to have a buddy; a larger affinity group is even better. Stay in touch. Those who do not wish to be directly confrontational can keep their distance, and the rest of us can make sure the fascists don’t get too close to our friends and comrades. Pay special attention to people of color and other targeted populations. If someone is getting targeted, get in the way. Be creative; think of what you can do that will ruin the enemy’s evening, while protecting yourself and those around you.

This protest is being planned by the DC Anti-Fascist Coalition. We recently organized successful protests against the white supremacist “think tank” National Policy Institute. Our events drew about 500 activists and led the way for massive public outcry against the Fascist Alt-Right. Let’s repeat that, and open the Trump presidency on the proper foot.

The DC Anti-Fascist Coalition is an anti-racist, anti-fascist coalition; united along these principles:

We confront, and do not ignore, oppressors
We don’t rely on the cops or the courts. Cops reinforce oppressive systems. We rely on ourselves to protect ourselves and fight for deeper justice.

Within the movement we have differing opinions and approaches, but we agree to support each other.

We commit to doing the necessary work to build a broad, strong movement against racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, homophobia, transphobia, discrimination against the disabled, the oldest, the youngest, and the most oppressed people.

We want a classless, free society. We intend to win!

Protesta el evento “Deploraball” del Alt-Right fascista.
Fecha: 19 de Enero
Hora: 8:00 p.m.
Ubicación: National Press Club, 529 14th Street NW, Washington, DC 20045

Confrontamos, no ignoramos a lxs opresores.

Legalization For All

Call for a National Day of Protest for Immigrant Rights on Inauguration Day, Friday, January 20, 2017

Llamado para un Día Nacional de Protesta por los derechos de los inmigrantes el Día de Inauguración, viernes 20 de enero del 2017
Por: Red de Legalización Para Todos (L4A)
*************************************
On Friday, January 20, 2017 Donald Trump will be inaugurated as President of the United States. Trump ran a racist campaign, calling Mexicans “rapists, criminals, and drug dealers…”

His plans for his first 100 days includes ending DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), deporting millions of undocumented, building a wall on the border with Mexico, further criminalizing the undocumented, cutting off Federal funds to sanctuary cities, and more attacks on immigrants. 70% of the undocumented are from Mexico and Central America, and these are the people that Trump is primarily targeting.

In December, 2005 the Republican House of Representatives passed HR4437, known as the Sensenbrenner bill. This bill was also an attack on the undocumented, calling for many of the same actions as Trump: criminalizing the undocumented, expanding the wall on the border with Mexico, and penalizing sanctuary cities.

In response massive protests, centered in the Chicano, Mexicano, and Latino communities brought more than a million people into the streets in 2006. Students walked out of class, workers left their jobs, and community members of all ages rallied in protest, calling for legalization of the undocumented. This mass resistance was able to stop the Sensenbrenner bill.

The Legalization for All (L4A) network feels that a similar mass movement is needed to stop Trump’s attacks on the undocumented. We are calling on students, workers, and community people, especially from the Chicano, Mexicano, and Latino communities, to organize a national day of protest on inauguration day, Friday, January 20, 2017.

Trump has his 100 day plan, we in the immigrant rights movement need to respond with our own 100 day plan to also build for even bigger protests May 1!

¡Defender DACA!
¡Legalización no Deportación!
¡Alto al muro fronterizo con México!

DCMJ

The Inaugural #Trump420

You are cordially invited to join DCMJ for the inaugural #Trump420 taking place on January 20, 2017 in Washington, DC!

We will gather on the west side of Dupont Circle at 8am for coffee & tea and parade down to the National Mall at 10am. Along the way we’ll hand out 4,200 joints of legally grown cannabis! At 4 minutes and 20 seconds into President Trump’s speech we’ll light up! (unless President Trump comes out now in support of full cannabis legalization in all 50 States and DC!)

We legalized cannabis in Washington, DC and we are not going to let anyone take that away from us! This is an outreach opportunity to show President Trump’s supporters we are the marijuana majority! Join us for smokin’ fun time!
