ICYMI: Sen. Rand Paul's Debate Message

WASHINGTON, D.C.
- In case you missed it, the Rand Paul for President Campaign released a memo outlining Sen Rand Paul's strategy and messaging for tonight's CNN Republican Primary Debate. A copy of this memo can be found below.

Subject: Rand's Debate Message

Memorandum

From:    Doug Stafford, Chief Strategist
                Chip Englander, Campaign Manager
Re:         Debate Strategy
Date:     September 16, 2015

Tonight we've purchased advertising in Iowa and New Hampshire for the presidential debate. Our internal polling show 85% of caucus and primary voters in these states will tune-in tonight.

This ad lays out Senator Paul's debate game plan. The two big points he'll make tonight.

1. He's the candidate with the biggest, boldest tax and budget proposals. He's the only candidate with a flat tax that would gut the IRS and eliminate special deals for Wall Street. He's the only candidate who's actually authored a plan to balance the budget that eliminates $500 billion IN ONE YEAR and abolishes cabinet departments. He understands no matter which party is in power government and debt have grown - and he'll fight them.

2. He's the candidate who wants term limits to get rid of career politicians in both parties. He understands the Washington Machine has created a country run by lobbyists, for special interests, and politicians in both parties let it happen. We need to require Congress to read the bills before they vote on them. Congress should live under the same laws the people do.

Taxes, debt, and a corrupt culture in Washington is what animates the election. They're the very issues that drive Rand Paul.

And it's the message he will deliver tonight.

Watch the TV ad for yourself HERE.

Dear ___,

I’m writing you from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, where at 8 PM ET tonight Marco will join 10 other candidates for the Republican debate on CNN. In addition to watching it on TV, you can join our debate team online at marcorubio.com/debate for real-time analysis, fact-checks, and video clips during the debate.

At the first debate in Cleveland last month, millions of Americans got their first look at Marco — and they really liked what they saw. Marco talked about how his parents achieved the American Dream and declared, “If I am the nominee, the Republican Party will be the party of the future.” Expect more of the same tonight.

While our campaign has had a great couple of weeks since the first debate, the same cannot be said of the other candidates. We expect some of them will attack each other in hopes of turning around their faltering campaigns. Marco doesn’t need to do that. He isn’t coming to the Reagan Library to attack other Republicans.

Marco is going to talk about how this election is about what kind of country we will be in the 21st Century. We’re headed in the wrong direction —  Washington is stuck in the past. What we need now is a leader like Marco who has new ideas for a New American Century. That’s what tonight’s debate is about.

Sincerely,

Terry Sullivan

Campaign Manager

P.S. Please be sure to check out marcorubio.com/debate tonight for analysis, real-time fact-checking, and video clips.

Letter from The Trump Organization to CNN

September 8, 2015

Mr. Jeff Zucker
President
CNN Worldwide
10 Columbus Circle
New York, New York 10019

Dear Jeff,

Over the weekend it was announced by numerous entertainment channels and magazines that your ad rates have gone from $5,000 to $200,000, or a 4,000% increase. Since then I have heard that your rates will go even higher. While I refuse to brag, and as you know very well, this tremendous increase in viewer interest and advertising is due 100% to “Donald J. Trump.” You saw it on The Apprentice where it was virtually the easiest show to sell to advertisers on television, and at extraordinary rates. In fact, NBC renewed The Apprentice, even though I told them not to because I was running for President (something which did not exactly endear them to me).

As you are aware, for the first debate, FOX unexpectedly (but not to those who know), had one of the largest audiences in the history of cable television, 24 million people plus, and word is that your audience will be even larger.

I am self funding my campaign—I do not want money from lobbyists, donors or special interest groups. Likewise, you should view the second debate broadcast as a public service and not accept the massive profits that this airing will generate. I believe that all profits from this broadcast should go to various VETERANS groups, a list of which I will send to you in the near future. The veterans of our country, our finest people, have been treated horribly by our government and its “all talk and no action” politicians. In fact, some would say they are treated like third class citizens—even worse, in many cases, than illegal immigrants. It is about time that someone comes to their aid. Let’s start now!

Years ago, when I built the Vietnam Memorial in Downtown Manhattan with a small group of others, I had always felt that we have to be helping our veterans far more than we do. That is why my campaign is so focused on these great people who have done so much for us. This large contribution of many millions of dollars would be a truly wonderful thing for CNN to do.

Please let me know what your decision is as soon as possible. Thank you!

Subject: Fw: Leaders Ask CNN to Include Carly in Debate
To: Jeff Zucker

Dear Jeff Zucker,
Carly Fiorina is a top tier candidate in this race. She won the last debate and has been in the top 10 in every poll released this month. To ensure a fair and representative process, your network should seat her alongside the other candidates polling in the top 10. A transparent effort by your network to benefit candidates from and of the political establishment will not be acceptable to conservative grassroots voters. We are the audience for this debate, and we will not tolerate a TV network inappropriately influencing our primary process.
We also call on the Republican National Committee (RNC) to encourage CNN to adjust its debate criteria.  Make no mistake, the RNC—which decided how many GOP primary debates there would be and who would host them—holds considerable influence over this process. Its continued silence is tantamount to turning its back on Republican voters who overwhelmingly want to see Carly on the debate stage.
Carly Fiorina has already proven that she deserves to be on the main debate stage. It’s time for CNN and the RNC to recognize it as well.

CNN, the RNC, and how to cater to the political establishment

Carly won the debate[s] on August 6th. In the three national polls that have been released since the debate, Carly is between 4th and 7th place. Her name ID and net favorability have risen by double digits. And she has continued to impress crowds during her most recent trips to Iowa, New Hampshire, Georgia, and Nevada.

The state polling since the first debate is even more stark—and relevant, since that’s actually how we pick presidential nominees in this country. Here’s how Carly ranks in every state poll since the first debate: New Hampshire: 3rd; South Carolina: 4th; Wisconsin: 5th; Florida: 5th; Ohio: 6th; Pennsylvania: 4th; Nevada: 2nd; North Carolina: 6th; Arizona: 3rd; Iowa: 5th; Michigan: 2nd;Missouri: 7th; New Hampshire: 5th; Iowa: 5th; Iowa: 5th.

Despite being solidly in the top 10 by every measure, the political establishment is still rigging the game to keep Carly off the main debate stage next month.

The RNC has chosen CNN to host the next debate, and CNN has decided that they will average polls going back to July 16th. Carly would easily make this debate if there were a consistent number of polls from one week to the next, but that’s not the case. In the three weeks before the first debate, CNN will be counting nine polls. In the three weeks since the debate, they will only be counting two. By simply averaging these polls together, CNN will be weighting the three weeks of polling before the debate more than three times as heavily as the three weeks of polling after Carly won the first debate.

The RNC should ask CNN to treat the polling in July the same as the polling that comes after. Because there were nine polls released in the three weeks before the last debate, one would expect 18 polls released in the six weeks between the two debates. If that does not happen, the polling average of those six weeks should be treated as the equivalent of 18 polls. Assuming the numbers remain consistent with current polling, Carly would easily place in the top 10 for the main debate.

To be clear, if Carly isn’t on the main stage, it will not be because her rise in the polls can't overcome lower polling from July, but because only two of CNN’s chosen polling companies have released polls at all since the first debate. If the RNC won’t tell CNN to treat post-debate polling consistently with pre-debate polling, they are putting their thumb on the scale and choosing to favor candidates with higher polling for three weeks in July over candidates with measurable momentum in August and September.

We’re proud of Carly’s debate performance. We’re excited that grassroots voters around the country want to hear more from her. It will be interesting to see if CNN has no qualms excluding someone who is polling in the top 5 in Iowa and New Hampshire, in second place in multiple states, and well within the top 10 nationally. And it will be disappointing if Reince Priebus and the Republican establishment stand by and let a TV network keep Carly off the main stage…again.

It’s a simple question: Will we have a fair debate process or will the political establishment keep ignoring grassroots Republicans?

Gilmore for America
For Immediate Release: September 11, 2015

Jim Gilmore Skewers CNN for Excluding Him from Reagan Library Debate

Alexandria, VA -- Former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore today skewered CNN's decision to exclude him from the Sept. 16th at the Ronald Reagan Library in California as "arbitrary and capricious and an obvious attempt to silence someone who is critical of the leading candidates for the Republican presidential nomination."

"CNN's decision to keep me, and only me, out of the Reagan Library debate is an attempt to muzzle someone who forcefully opposes the candidates preferred by CNN and by the Republican leadership."

CNN has said their decision is poll based, but Gilmore pointed out that he is polling as well or better than several other candidates appearing in the debate including Sen. Lindsey Graham, former New York Gov. Pataki, and Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana.  Several recent polls have had Gilmore at or above the 1 percent polling threshold that CNN said was its standard for debate participants.

"CNN claims to be adhering to a policy that they threw out the window last week when they bumped Carly Fiorina from the second tier debate to first tier principally because the RNC wants to showcase her gender," said Gilmore.  "You either have standards or you don't and CNN doesn't."

"Along with the RNC, they are trying to narrow the Republican field to their chosen frontrunners and they don't want to allow me the debate time to critically question Donald Trump's ridiculous proposal to eliminate birthright citizenship or Jeb Bush's head-in-the-clouds support for Common Core," Gilmore said.

"What the voters of this country need is an open and full participation debate of all the substantive candidates for President, not a hand-picked discussion by CNN's preferred candidates," Gilmore declared.   "I am the one candidate with actual experience who is taking on the Republican leadership in Washington.”

Hiding Their Out-of-Touch Agenda in Plain Sight

By: Christina Reynolds
September 16, 2015
https://medium.com/@creynoldsnc/hiding-their-out-of-touch-agenda-in-plain-sight-cf440ba827b2

Nearly six weeks ago, the Republicans met on stage in Ohio and confirmed that, across the board, they support an out of touch, out of date agenda that will be devastating to American families trying to get ahead and stay ahead. From going even further in limiting women’s health care choices to over-heated vitriol on issues like immigration and labor to failing to mention the middle class, the Republicans made clear that our suspicions from the campaign trail were right: they have the wrong vision for America.

In the intervening weeks, as Donald Trump has solidified his lead in state and national polls, a surprising thing has happened: the Republicans have tried more of the same — only louder. Rather than differentiate themselves from an extreme agenda that is very unpopular with most voters, the Republicans have doubled down, trying to out-Trump Trump as they match their right-wing positions with offensive rhetoric. As Hillary Clinton has noted, they’re turning the Party of Lincoln into the Party of Trump — and they show no signs of stopping.

That’s when we knew what we had to do to prepare for the debate. Rather than point out their own records — and believe me, there’s a lot to talk about there — we figured we’d let the Republicans speak for themselves. And boy, have they been talking.

In case you’ve not been following the race over the summer, or if it’s too hard to cut through the press around Donald Trump rallies, here’s what you’ve missed:

·         Donald Trump introduced his mass deportation plan and noted he would shut down the government over Planned Parenthood…just for a start.
·         Jeb Bush claimed Planned Parenthood doesn’t actually do women’s health, attacked American citizens by calling them “anchor babies” and proposed trillions in new tax cuts for the wealthiest few.
·         Scott Walker briefly supported building a wall along the Canadian border and stepped up his war on working families by announcing a plan toeliminate federal workers unions.
·         Ben Carson (a doctor) said victims of rape or incest should just quickly run to the emergency room to avoid pregnancy.
·         Ted Cruz supported breaking the law in order to oppose marriage equality.
·         Marco Rubio reiterated his position that victims of rape or incest should not be allowed to have access to safe abortions.
·         Mike Huckabee offered to go to jail in order to defend his opposition to marriage equality.
·         Rand Paul (also a doctor) made the outrageous claim that people with jobs don’t have time to do heroin. This was his response to a question about the serious epidemic facing our country.
·         John Kasich said raising the minimum wage could create morale problems for higher paid workers and argued that shutting down the government is an effective tool.
·         Chris Christie proposed treating immigrants like FedEx packages.
·         Carly Fiorina announced that she opposes guaranteed paid maternity leave and, in an interview this week, supported a government shutdown over Planned Parenthood funding.

Over the last day, the Briefing’s Twitter feed has been offering a sampling of 26 of the most egregious Republican comments since the last debate. You can find the full list at www.GOPABCs.com, our new site. You can see some of them at work in our new video: Previously, on the last President Campaign Apprentice.

We expect lots of fireworks tonight as the other candidates try to get in their soundbites and take on Trump, but beneath the heated language and bombast, they’re telling us exactly what they’ll do as president. We just need to listen.

MEMO
TO:                 Interested Parties
FROM:           Jessica Mackler, President, American Bridge 21st Century
RE:                 GOP Punch-Out, Vol. II
DATE:            September 15, 2015

This Wednesday, CNN's Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, and conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, joined by Donald Trump and his crew of 10 sideshow candidates, will take the stage at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California, for the second GOP primary debate. But first, a brief update on how the field's shaken up since the last debate.

The GOP candidates have sprinted further to the right than anyone anticipated: Candidates have called for the repeal of the 14th Amendment, and an end to guaranteed citizenship to everyone born in the United States. Jeb Bush embraced the term "anchor babies," then angrily defended his use of the slur. Second-place Ben Carson said he might order drone strikes on the United States' southern border. Scott Walker floated the possibility of a wall on the U.S.-Canada border. And, perhaps most egregiously: Mike Huckabee said that 1857's Dred Scott decision is still "the law of the land."

Jeb Bush and Scott Walker, failing to keep up with the Donald, have absolutely plummeted in the last month. Scott Walker's dropped like an anchor: He's now polling at less than 5%
in Iowa and New Hampshire, and a shocking 2% nationally. Jeb's fallen, too, and polling under 10% in those same surveys. Needless to say, Jeb didn't do himself any favors by embracing his brother's disastrous, trillion-dollar invasion of Iraq. Meanwhile, Donald Trump and Ben Carson are on the upswing. The Donald's dominance's continued, and Ben Carson's displaced Jeb Bush, with a firm grasp on the second-place spot both nationally and in Iowa.

And with that, here's our debate preview with a rundown of what questions each candidate is hoping to avoid; plus, as a bonus, our predictions on how Donald Trump will give each of our favorite clowns a trademarked Trump smack-down.

1. Donald Trump.

· What question would he most hate to be asked?
Literally anything of substance -- not that it matters.

· How would he spin it?
No matter what he's asked, you can expect the classic Trump answer: Some vague incoherence that leads to into a xenophobic or sexist tangent, followed by his traditional lamentation about our "weak" leaders, and concluded with an earnest pledge to restore America to greatness.

The frontrunner, ladies and gentlemen.

2. Ben Carson.

· What question would he most hate to be asked?
"You've consistently maintained that global warming is '
irrelevant.' How can you, a world-renowned neurosurgeon, reconcile your science background with your willful ignorance of the incontrovertible reality of global warming?"

· How would he spin it?
"We may be warming. We may be cooling,"
Carson's said in the past. But that kind of statement is active denial of a well-documented scientific consensus that global warming is both man-made and very real.

· What'll Trump do to get in his head?
Donald Trump called Carson an "OK doctor," trying to get a rise out of him, and Carson was the one who apologized. Trump isn't getting to him.

3. Jeb Bush.

· What question would he most hate to be asked?
"You say we're 'way beyond' your brother's Social Security privatization plan -- the plan you pitched to voters in 2005. How much further does your plan go? There'll have to be serious changes to offset your proposed $3.4 trillion in tax cuts over the next decade."

· How would he spin it?
There's no spin here. Jeb's on the record for raising the retirement age, and Jeb's economists are on the record saying that Jeb will have to make serious changes to earned benefits in order to offset his massive tax cuts.

· What'll Trump do to get in his head?
Donald Trump took up residence there months ago. Wait for the Donald to throw out a "low energy person" Jeb jab, sit back, and watch the fireworks.

4. Ted Cruz.

· What question would he most hate to be asked?
"Do you want to be credited with shutting down the government over Planned Parenthood funding, even as fellow Republicans call it an "exercise in futility," your Senate colleagues see it as political grandstanding, and a plurality of voters would shoulder your party with the blame?"

· How would he spin it?
For anyone else, this might be elicit an awkward response -- but it's Ted Cruz we're talking about. Expect grandstanding. The only thing this guy loves more than furthering his party's disunion and shutting down the government, is -- well, actually, that's Senator Cruz's dream evening.

· What'll Trump do to get in his head?
Trump and Cruz are best buddies -- for now. That'll all change whenever Cruz tries to make a play for Trump's voters. Expect civility, and Cruz to be sucking up to the Donald.

5. Scott Walker.

· What question would he most hate to be asked?
"You're crashing and burning, Governor. Your earning less than 5% support in Iowa, as well as nationally. It's clear that voters are simply no longer interested in your candidacy. How can they trust you after your countless position changes and refusals to take a firm stance on issues?"

· How would he spin it?
There's no given question that Scott Walker is "ready to tackle," per se -- and certainly not one about that very weakness. (He'd probably be comfortable fielding a question or two on his Kohl's discounted shirt story, but he's unlikely to get one of those at the debate.) Walker would refuse to take a stance and mumble something about "hypotheticals." What we can count on: No matter what he says, his campaign will walk it back approximately two days later.

· What'll Trump do to get in his head?
Not applicable; Scott Walker is no longer a threat to Donald Trump.

6. Marco Rubio.

· What question would he most hate to be asked?
"You recently went hard to the right on abortion -- now saying that you don't support exceptions for rape or incest. You have a checkered history on it, though, and in the past have been more flexible. What changed?"

· How would he spin it?
Rubio's sure to stick to his line that he's always been in favor of zero exceptions. And we know why: He's looking for anyway he can to out-Trump Trump. We'll see how that plays with voters...

· What'll Trump do to get in his head?
Look for the Donald to jab Rubio on his friend-turned-rival relationship with Jeb Bush, and question his loyalty.

7. Mike Huckabee.

· What question would he most hate to be asked?
"You recently had a quite embarrassing incident surrounding Kim Davis' refusal to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. Not only did you suggest that the voice of the Supreme Court -- the third branch of government -- is meaningless, but you also, apparently forgetting about the 14th Amendment, mistakenly suggested that the Dred Scott decision remains the law of the land. Any regrets?"

· How would he spin it?
If things get too heated, Huckabee can always have a staff member step in to box out the questioner

· What'll Trump do to get in his head?
As with Scott Walker, hard to see Donald Trump going after Huckabee -- they're both down at 5%, why'd the Donald bother?

8. Carly Fiorina.

· What question would she most hate to be asked?
"You are running on your record as a CEO and business professional. You claim experience, but your business record is marred by "massive layoffs," outsourcing, and your ultimate firing, for which you were compensated $42 million. Is that truly a record to be run on?"

· How would she spin it?
She can't dispute the fact that she "oversaw 30,000 job cuts."

· What'll Trump do to get in her head?
Trump crossed the line. We trust he'll be nothing but apologetic for his wildly inappropriate remarks about her appearance.

9. Rand Paul.

· What question would he most hate to be asked?
"Donald Trump recently referred to you as
a 'lightweight,' who's state is 'embarrassed' by you -- how do you respond to that accusation?"

· How would he spin it?
Oof.

· What'll Trump do to get in his head?
Other than Jeb, and the ever-so-desperate Bobby Jindal, Rand Paul has been one of Donald Trump's more outspoken critics. Last debate, they had a little scuffle, and Trump jabbed at Paul with a "You're having a hard time, tonight." But Paul's just another face in the crowd these days -- not a priority for Trump.

10. John Kasich.

· What question would he most hate to be asked?
"Governor Kasich, why don't you tell us a little about
your role at Lehman Brothers and any responsibility you may have had in your firm's collapse -- a collapse that directly led to 2008's global financial crisis?"

· How would he spin it?
Kasich can spin it any way he wants, but fact of the matter is, he was getting rich while hardworking Americans were losing everything -- and they, at the very least, deserve answers on his role.

· What'll Trump do to get in his head?
Even if the moderators don't ask about it, Trump is sure to question Kasich's Lehman Brothers record in advocating his populist tax agenda -- he's done it before, stands to reason he'll bring it up again.

11. Chris Christie.

· What question would he most hate to be asked?
Do NOT ask him about the latest Monmouth University poll.

· How would he spin it?
"Spin" isn't the right word.

· What'll Trump do to get in his head?
Who knows? It probably won't even be intentional. When you have a temper like Governor Christie does, you can lose your cool over literally anything.

Racist Rhetoric by GOP Contenders Not Welcome in Southern California

Hundreds of California Activists Rally Outside CNN Debate, Calling for an End to Attacks Against Blacks, Immigrant Families, and Working Families, Urging Candidates to Focus on Issues & Solutions. Livestream will be available on Twitter via Periscope @Citizenship4All

Los Angeles – On site for the second Republican presidential debate at the Ronald Reagan Library in Southern California, more than 40 local and statewide California organizations—including faith, immigrant, civil rights groups, students, and labor unions—are calling for a #NoHateDebate and an end to the racist, xenophobic rhetoric that has fueled the Republican primary. Hundreds will caravan to Simi Valley, CA to rally outside against the Republican candidates. Prior to leaving, local groups will hold an early morning pre-debate press conference in Los Angeles. Both events will be live-streamed on Periscope and Twitter at @Citizenship4All.

Earlier in the week, more than 70 organizations issued a letter to CNN, calling on the network to prohibit any further bigotry or attacks by candidates during the debates and to urge each candidate to stop the hate and instead focus on issues affecting African Americans, immigrants, and working families.

#NoHateDebate - Open Letter to CNN

To: CNN GOP Debate Moderators: Jake Tapper, Dana Bash, and Hugh Hewitt

From: Faith, Immigrant, Labor, Racial and Social Justice Groups
Re: Letter to CNN to Stop the Hate at the GOP Debate

Dear Mr. Tapper, Ms. Bash and Mr. Hewitt,

As faith, immigrant, labor, racial and social justice organizations, we want to express our concern with the increasing hatred and vitriol being directed towards both people of color and the immigrant community by certain Presidential candidates.

We are asking that CNN help bring back a civil debate when it comes to issues that hard working people face at the second GOP presidential candidate debate to be held on Thursday, September 16, 2015 at the Ronald Reagan Library. The United States is a nation made up of people from all over the world, of immigrants seeking a better life, and as such, we are disappointed by mainstream media organizations which have left rampant hate speech and rhetoric to stand unchallenged. We strongly believe that journalistic ethics must be upheld to challenge racism, hate, violence and xenophobia during this and all future Presidential debates.

Our diverse communities have contributed blood, sweat and tears to strengthen our American fabric. Despite the many contributions made by individuals and their families, we are beginning to witness a troubling increase in unsubstantiated claims which seek to demonize whole communities. Chants of “white power” at a Donald Trump rally in Mobile, Alabama and the recent racially motivated attack on a Latino homeless man in Boston are examples of a type of hatred not seen for decades. By allowing any Presidential candidate a platform to spew this type of hate, we feel these harmful words will turn into violence against our communities.

The upcoming Presidential Debate will be a test as to how much leeway can be given to the language of hate. The further the candidates are from our diverse experiences, the more they can avoid being held accountable for what they say. We would like to recommend the following pledges to be asked of all Presidential candidates:

* Would all Presidential candidates pledge to stop using hate speech which incites violence against immigrants and working people?
* Would all Presidential candidates pledge to protect the constitution, including the 14th Amendment?
* Would all Presidential candidates pledge to meet and listen to U.S citizen children, spouses, and relatives of undocumented immigrants to find a real solution to our broken immigration system?

America is changing for the better and with it comes an incredible diversity. While some see this as the end to an era they once knew, we see it as the culmination of all that makes our country great. This is the new emerging America. To embrace the change, to be inclusive and to work together to protect the values that have kept our nation going for generations is something no aspiring Presidential candidate can take away. Our Asian and Latino immigrant communities are waiting in the wings for a chance to become citizens and shine. Our African American brothers and sisters are standing up for their rights for the simple chance to live. We lift up together the hopes and dreams with a common thread that connects us and underscores our humanity. We can no longer allow for hate to rule the day, we expect no less from CNN.

Sincerely,

[the 71 undersigned organizations]
