Overview:
Delaware
remained
solidly in the blue column, as Clinton/Kaine carried the state with a
plurality of 50,476 votes (11.43 percentage points). Clinton tallied a big
margin in New Castle Co. while Trump carried Sussex and Kent
Cos.. Clinton's level of support, without the boost of Delawarean
Biden on the ticket, was about the same as that achieved by Kerry in
2004. There were
no Fall campaign visits by the candidates except for Green Party
nominee Jill Stein, who rallied at the George Wilson Community Center

Overview Delaware remained solidly in the blue column. In terms of visits, Vice President Joe Biden frequently comes home to Wilmington, Ann Romney did fundraisers in Greenville on July 18, and Libertarian VP nominee Judge Jim Gray made a couple of stops in Dover on Sept. 18. Overview Having the home state Senator on the ticket provided a huge boost to Obama, who won with a plurality of 103,073 votes (24.99 percentage points). McCain did carry Sussex County. In terms of events, Biden spoke at the Delaware Democratic Party's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner in Dover on Oct. 13, and the Bidens did a Change We Need rally at the University of Delaware main campus in Newark on Oct. 31. Note that Democrats' registration advantage increased from 10.95 percentage points for the 2004 general election to 13.03 points at the time of the Feb. 5, 2008 primary to 16.36 points in Nov. 2008. Overview Delaware was talked about as a battleground state, and the campaigns advertised and had staff in the state, but in the end the Gore-Lieberman ticket won with a comfortable plurality of 42,780 votes (13.06 percentage points). In one of the most closely fought Senate races in the country, Gov. Thomas R. Carper (D) defeated incumbent Sen. William V. Roth Jr. (R), 55.5% to 43.7%. In the gubernatorial race, Lt. Gov. Ruth Ann Minner (D) won by a wide margin over John M. Burris (R) to keep the seat in Democratic hands. General Election Activity |
