Summary:
As expected the five Northeastern states went to Trump. The
Kasich (+) and
Cruz campaigns chose their targets but came away with very meager
results. Trump
obtained over 50-percent of the vote in all five states. Cruz did
abysmally; his best showing was a bit under 22-percent in
Pennsylvania, and he finished third in the other four states.
Kasich's best state showing was 28-percent in Connnecticut, but he won
no delegates there.

OVERVIEW
The Kasich for America April 20 memo suggested the campaign could play
in
CD1, CD2, CD4 and CD5. The pro-Kasich super PAC New Day for
America opened three
offices in the state.
Trump carried 164 of 169
towns; the other five went for Kasich. He did best in CD3,
centering on New Haven, where he won 63.2% of the vote. Kasich
fared best in the CD4, the southwestern tip of the state, garnering
35.5%; he managed just 22.3% in the CD3.

OVERVIEW
On April 9 the Kasich campaign announced opening of
the first presidential campaign office of the cycle in Delaware and the
hiring of a field director.
However the campaign's April 20 memo seems to write off the state
("Delaware will award all 16 of its delegates if a candidate receives a
plurality
of the vote. We expect Trump to have a strong chance of finishing above
50% and would recommend spending resources on the other April 26th
states.") New Day for America, the pro-Kasich super PAC, opened
two
offices in the state as well. There is a Cruz Delaware
connection: his
mother grew up in Wilmington. Trump held a big rally at the
State Fairgrounds in Harrington on April 22.

OVERVIEW
The Kasich campaign's April 20 memo stated, "Our
data show that Trump could lose to Kasich in almost any district but
MD-1. He is particularly vulnerable in MD-4 and MD-8 as well as MD-2,
MD-3, MD-5, MD-6 and MD-7." It proved to be wishful thinking as
Trump carried every county.
Maryland had a number of
connections to the campaign before the April 2016 homestretch.
Former candidate Dr. Ben Carson was a pediatric neurosurgeon at Johns
Hopkins in Baltimore for more than 25 years. Gov. Larry Hogan was
an early and important backer of Gov. Chris Christie, announcing his
endorsement on July 15, 2015. Additionally, former Gov. Bob
Ehrlich looked into running and made nine visits to New Hampshire
before ruling out a campaign in summer 2015.
DELEGATES
"Three delegates for each candidate are elected directly on the
ballot
in each congressional district and at-large delegates are voted on
individually at the State Central Committee meeting on May 14.
Congressional district delegates are winner-take-all by district vote,
at-large delegates are winner-take-all by statewide vote."
National delegate
allocation: Trump

OVERVIEW
Pennsylvania's unbound CD delegates made things interesting; some of
the delegate candidates aligned with
one or another of the candidates while others said they woud support
the winner of the vote in the district. (The situation
is reminiscent of the DC Republican State Convention which also had
direct election of delegates; there some of
the delegate candidates were organized in slates, others promoted
themselves, and it was unclear how things would turn out).
Donald Trump had the support of U.S. Reps. Tom Marino (PA-10, Williamsport) and Lou Barletta (PA-11, Hazelton), and his campaign clearly did work to gain support of CD delegates. The Cruz likewise put in work on CD delegates. The Kasich campaign efforts on the delegate front were less clear. [Cruz | Trump | Kasich]
Kasich hoped to do well here; he is governor of neighboring Ohio and grew up in McKees Rocks, PA (in Allegheny Co., a bit north of Pittsburgh). In addition to the official campaign presence, New Day for America, the pro-Kasich super PAC, opened three offices. However the result was another sub-par performance as he came in at a bit more than 19-percent of the vote. Cruz finished second and Trump won another state, carrying every county.

DELEGATES
"Pennsylvania elects three delegates from each congressional
district on
the primary ballot and the State Committee elects 14 at-large delegates
at their meeting on May 21. Congressional district delegates are
submitted by campaigns, though are technically unbound. At-large
delegates are winner-take-all based on the statewide vote."
17 at large to the statewide winner and 54 (3 x 18 CD) unbound.

OVERVIEW
According to the Board of Elections, Republicans account for a bit more
than 10-percent of the state's registered voters [Dem 294,086 - Rep.
78,064 - Mod. 2,619 - Un. 378,538 - Total 753,307].
Rhode
Island provided Trump's best result percentagewise on the night.
Kasich had an
office in Warwick and the pro-Kasich super PAC had an office in North
Kingstown, and he did manage to pick up a handful of delegates as a
result of proportional allocation. Even Cruz picked up a couple
of delegates.
DELEGATES
"Delegates are elected directly on the ballot in the primary election.
Delegates are awarded proportionately on an at-large and congressional
district basis with a 10 percent threshold."
National delegate
allocation: Trump 12, Kasich 5, Cruz 2.
