Potential and Declared Democratic Presidential Candidates

From the outset, conventional wisdom and media attention focused to a huge degree on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; in terms of name ID, establishment support and fundraising clout she was a seemingly prohibitive favorite.  The "inevitable Hillary" scenario severely dampened activity by other potential Democrats in 2013-14.  Nonetheless, several competitors emerged to challenge Clinton.  Sen. Bernie Sanders has mounted a strong effort, while former Gov. Martin O'Malley's campaign failed to gain traction.
