Mail in the 2016 NH Republican Primary
Campaigns and super
PACs flooded voters with persuasion mail during the New Hampshire
Presidential Primary. Mail allows the campaigns and allied
groups
to
communicate below the radar
and is often used for attacks; there is no way to tell how much
is being sent out or who is receiving it.
Several Granite Staters have
helpfully provided Democracy in Action with their accumulated
mail. The non-scientific sample of Republican mail includes 104
pieces (22 pieces
from six campaigns and 82 pieces from 11 groups). This gives a
fair sense of
which groups were maiing, how actively, which issues they were
emphasizing and which audiences they were targeting as well some of the
attacks that were being launched. Top issues included national
security, the economy, and the 2nd Amendment.
More than three
times (3.7 times) as many pieces were coming from non-campaign
committees as from
the campaigns themselves. Right to Rise USA (pro-Bush) led in
volume with 27 different pieces found; New Day
for America (pro-Kasich), America Leads (pro-Christie) and
Conservative Solutions PAC (pro-Rubio) each mailed ten or more
different pieces. In addition to quantity, Right to Rise USA also
produced several distinctive pieces. One, when opened, revealed a
three dimensional dice activated by a rubber band; the sides showed
Rubio, Kasich and Christie, and the message was "Don't Roll The Dice on
Risky
Leaders." Another piece used lenticular printing to show Rubio as
a weathervane moving back and forth. Conservative Solutions PAC
had the highest
proportion of attack pieces; nine of ten targeted another candidate or
candidates.
In addition to the super PACs, a couple of 501(c)(4)s (social
welfare organizations) were active. These can "engage in some
political activities, so long as that is not its primary activity." (>)
Conservative
Solutions
Project,
aligned
with
Rubio,
seemed
to
be
trying
to
paint
Cruz
as
weak
on national security by aligning him with Rand Paul
and Democrats. America Needs Leadership sent out a number of
general conservative issue pieces as well as several targeting Rubio
and
one on Kasich.
